Re: Fuuka/ Persona 3 Portable/ 2 of 2

First Person (entry type):

Does anyone know of a suitable substitute for butter? I tried olive oil...I really thought it would work, because oil is just softened butter, right? All of the cooking sites I consulted said it wasn’t a good idea, but I think oil would be a better alternative to butter, because it’s healthier and has a lot of flavor. I think the dish I made with it tasted okay. Junpei-kun seemed to like it, too, he ate it very quickly. Yukari-chan even gave all of the leftovers to Koro-chan when he took a walk by the dorm.

Still, I wonder if they liked it...Akihiko-senpai actually had to, uh...Erm...b-be sick to his stomach after eating it, but Minako-san said it was just because he’d been out in the heat for too long jogging. I really hope they liked it...

Third Person:

Fuuka was leaning against one of the counters in the Home Economics room, the setting sun bathing the room in an orange glow. Her uniform was covered in white patches of flour and her face was smudged with cream-colored batter. She sighed and turned around, opening a cabinet behind her, rummaging around the various cans, going for a container of white icing.

“I should probably use the packaged stuff...my last try on making the icing didn’t go too well...” She spoke to herself, not caring if it would make her seem weird. No one else was in the room, anyhow, no one watching her. Pulling said container out, she closed the cabinet and sighed again. She was pinning all her hopes on this cake coming out right. She’d been working on it since school had gone out for the day, and she’d been hoping for it to come out so she could serve it to the members of SEES the next day, on Sunday.

She’d planned on making something for all of them the whole week, but she had moved her hopes to many different dishes after failing on pork cutlets, miso soup, soba...and everything else she’d tried. She had decided on a cake that morning (she’d thought “After all, who doesn’t love sweets, right?”), on the bullet train to Gekkoukan, but she hadn’t had much luck with that, either. She’d wasted one whole thing of flour when she accidentally dropped it, she’d messed up the batter when she forgot to put egg in it...today just wasn’t her day.

...was something burning? She rushed over to the oven the smell came from, the one baking her cake, and nearly screamed when she saw the temperature. “I-I set it on 450 degrees? I-I-I thought I’d set it on 350!” She hurriedly pushed on her oven mitts and opened the appliance, pulling out the burning hot pan with the cake in it. Setting it down on the counter (in too much of a rush to remember that burning metal shouldn’t mix with counters), she gave the cake a few tentative examinations. It was beyond salvageable.

Both Fuuka’s heart and stomach dropped straight to the floor. She grabbed the slowly cooling pan and a random piece of kitchenware, scraping the ruined dessert into the trash. She sighed, setting the piece of blackened metal into the sink, which was already piled high with wrecked dishes. She pulled off her stained apron and mitts, neatly folding the former and setting them on the counter. The Home Ec room’s floor was covered in flour and batter and even a few shattered eggs.

She made sure she cleaned up after herself; the other poor school members who used the room shouldn't be made to suffer. Still, as she took the bullet train back to the dorm that evening, she couldn’t pull that sick feeling from her stomach. She had failed them then, just as she had that last week in Tartarus, when she was too slow on her observation and Yukari had taken a strong enough shock to knock her unconscious. No one had blamed her; in their eyes, it was all just bad circumstance. But she couldn’t shake that horrible feeling.

She had let everyone down.
