History: As narrated by Flynn in the film, Rapnzel's story begins with a single drop of sunlight. One day a drop of sunlight fell to the Earth and from it grew a magical flower. The first to find this flower was Mother Gothel. She used the power of the flower to remain young and beautiful. However, centuries later in a kingdom, the queen was pregnant with their first child she grew very ill. The people of the kingdom went out in search of the magical flower. They were successful and the queen and her child were saved. Gothel was of course enraged to have lost her flower. When Rapunzel was born the kingdom rejoiced and celebrated by releasing a single lantern into the night sky. However, soon after Rapunzel's birth, Gothel snuck into the palace. She found that Rapunzel's hair had the same magical abilities as the flower. She tried to cut a lock of the hair, but once cut the hair lost all of its power. So instead she ran away with Rapunzel and hid her away in a tower where she would never be found. In their grief, the king and queen decided that they would release countless lanterns into the sky on each of Rapunzel's birthdays until she returned.
Skip ahead several years and Rapunzel is now an artistic, smart and optimistic young woman. She never once left her tower, though her chameleon friend, Pascal wishes otherwise. However, over the years her curiosity of the outside world has grown immensely. Once a year on her birthday she sneaks to her window at night and watches a million lights fly through the sky in the distance. More than anything she wanted to see those lights up close. One her eighteenth birthday she asked Mother Gothel if she could go to see them as her gift. Gothel is of course firmly against this and warns her of the frightening things in the outside world. She makes Rapunzel promise to never ask her about leaving again.
While Gothel is out traveling a man snuck into the tower. Using a frying pan, Rapunzel knocks him unconcious and hides him in her closet. She thinks for sure that this proves that she can face the scary things of the world. She waits until Gothel returns so that she can prove it to her. However Gothel does not give her the chance as she grows too angry about talk about leaving the tower. Rapunzel keeps the man a secret and waits for Gothel to leave again. Rapunzel finds a satchel that the man is carrying and inside it finds a tiara. She hides it and waits for the man to wake up. Using the satchel as a bargaining tool she finds out that the man is Flynn Rider, a thief. They make a promise that he will be her guide to the lights and in return she would return the satchel. For the first time Rapunzel leaves the tower and has complete freedom.
Of course, after they leave Rapunzel goes through some severe mood swings. She switches between being complete ecstatic about her freedom to sobbing in distress that she is a terrible daughter. Flynn attempts to use her uneasiness to trick her into giving up. They travel to a pub for all kinds of criminals but Rapunzel with her earnest dream to see the lanterns wins them over. Royal guards come to capture Flynn but the men in the pub allow for him, Rpaunzel and Pascal to escape. After a very exciting chase scene the three are trapped in a cave that is filling with water. Unable to see they can't find a way to escape. Desperate, Rapunzel reveals the power of her hair and lets it glow so they can find a way to escape. Because Flynn was hurt she also uses her hair to heal him. At this point she really begins to trust him, and even begin to love him. While Flynn is off gathering firewood Mother Gothel appears, aware of Rapunzel's escape. Rapunzel is sure that Flynn likes her and would not abandon her for the crown. So Gothel presses Rapunzel to test her relationship with Flynn by giving him the tiara back. Not wanting to believe this, Rapunzel refuses, but takes the tiara with her.
