Character: Dexter Morgan (nee Dexter Moser) Fandom: Dexter (TV series, Season 5)
Character Notes: History: Dexter was, as he says, "born in blood." His mother was murdered in front of him when he was only a toddler. And Detective Harry Morgan discovers him, and soon after adopts him. It is later revealed that Dexter's mother was a lover of Harry's. When Dexter starts exhibiting sociopathic tendencies as a child, Harry teaches him how to fake emotions. And when he starts having the urge to kill, Harry encourages him by taking him hunting. When animals are no longer enough to satiate Dexter, Harry proposes something: what if a dangerous killer makes his way through the cracks of the justice system? Dexter could then dispose of him neatly so that no one would ever know. And thus, Harry's Code and Dexter's entire way of life, was born. The two main points of the Code being: don't get caught, and only hurt bad people.
Even after Harry dies, Dexter continues to ruthlessly adhere to his code, only killing other serial killers. He is eventually hired by the Miami Police Department as a blood spatter analyst, where he has resources and access to the most dangerous people in Florida. Debra, Harry's daughter and Dexter's foster sister, is made a Homicide Detective and they work alongside one another. In the first season, it is revealed that Deb's fiance is the elusive Ice Truck Killer, and in another stackable realization Dexter finds out that Brian Moser is also his brother. His biological brother who was also in that storage unit filled with blood. But Harry hadn't saved him, he had saved Dexter. And Dexter had to kill his brother in order to protect Deb from the truth. (And also, all those poor armless hookers.)
There is also a man whom Dexter actually befriends in season three, Miguel Prado, who he tries to teach about Harry's Code. But after Miguel's first kill it is apparent to Dexter that he doesn't understand, and Dexter kills the man himself.
Dexter (at first as a cover more than anything) dates and later marries Rita Bennett. And thus Astor and Cody Bennett, her children, enter into his life. Their drug addict father will find himself in prison because of Dexter's innocent meddling, and later die in prison. Dexter and Rita go on to have a child together as well, named after the most important influence on Dexter's life: Harrison. The end of season four would find Rita Morgan, dead in a bathtub, baby Harrison crying in her blood. "Born in blood," just like his father. She was killed by the Trinity Killer whom Dexter befriends and tries to glean insight from as he too is living the lie of a wife and children. But he fails to kill him in time to save his own family, and thus blames himself for Rita's death.
I will be playing Dexter through season five as he attempts to come to grips with her death and being a single father, as well as trying to find time for his extracurricular pursuits.
Personality: Dexter is highly organized, and stresses neatness in all aspects of his life. He's a classic sociopath, but surprisingly loyal. His kills are extremely methodical and painstakingly premeditated. He never does anything without more thought than most people put into their whole lives. He's very attached to the way his life is now, happiness with a side of death - and is determined to keep it through any means necessary. He describes in the Pilot how he fakes his human interactions, supposing that most people do the same. But the fact that he fakes all of his interaction, even the more intimate, is what separates him out.
In the first episode he says, "Deb is nice. If I could have feelings for a person, they would probably be for her." His connection with his sister is evergrowing, even in the current season. But she still doesn't know that he's a killer or that her own father taught him how to hide it. At the precinct, he's a pretty likable guy. He brings donuts, he cracks jokes, and is just generally a guy who gets along with everyone even when he's a bit weird (he is the blood guy after all). While inside he claims to feel nothing at all, he puts on a very charming and cheerful persona that people instantly connect to. The Lieutenant LaGuerta even has a crush on him for some time before he gets serious with Rita.
The only person who seems unconvinced, is Sergeant Doakes. He is instantly creeped out by Dexter and lets him know that at every turn - always trying to catch him off guard. Doakes ultimately dies at the hands of Dexter's psycho lover, Lila Tournay, and his problems are over for a while. No one suspects or even raises an eyebrow at Dexter for a long time after that. And even when Rita dies, all but Joey Quinn (the newest addition) are convinced beyond all shadow of a doubt that Dexter could never have hurt her, or anyone else. They all consider Dexter family. He comes to accept that, and sort of reciprocate.
His relationship with Rita and the kids is perhaps the most perplexing. And is still evolving, even after Rita's death. He does genuinely care about Astor, Cody, and Harrison. And in fact, loves them. And admits to himself he loved Rita too. Harry, who comes to him in the form of hallucination on a regular basis, calls the children Dexter's "salvation." Other: There are only three people Dexter has ever killed that were not killers themselves. One was a serial pedophile he killed to protect Astor and Cody, two was an innocent man Dexter had killed in an extremely rare and sloppy moment (he hadn't done his research all the way through), and three was a man he killed out of rage just after Rita's death. A sloppy, angry kill - this is a new precedent for Dexter and a huge milestone for his character.
Also, random: "Harry's Code" may be an allusion for "Hammurabi's Code" ; "an eye for an eye" as Dexter only does bad things to bad people.
First Person (entry type): [accidental voice post] Looking for apartments suddenly seems.. pointless, without them here. But I know Deb will want me out of her hair. She thinks I don't notice how often she's at Quinn's. Or how tired she is when she's here. I can't take her for granted any more than I already have.
Yet all I can think of is.. work. What case are they working? Which killer are they tracking? How many victims....But every time I look at Harrison, I am reminded.
... [Dexter can be heard getting up and walking off for.. a few moments, before returning a beat later.]
I should have listened to Astor.. I could have gotten them to stay. Will I ever see them again? So much for my salvation.
I have to take advantage of this newfound free time. Who knows how long it will last...
Third Person: [based on S5, E1] Dexter looked down at the mosaic he'd created, blood and flesh making their own jaggedly interlocking puzzle over the linoleum. He had to admire his work, messy though it was. Suddenly, overwhelmed, he had to look elsewhere as he made a shaky journey back to his legs. He couldn't say he was surprised to see his step-father standing there.
"I thought you'd gone," his own voice, but from across the room, realizing belatedly that's where his numb feet had taken him.
Running away hadn't been his best plan, in fact, hadn't been a plan at all. He was, doubtlessly, a person of interest in the FBI's case of his wife's murder but he was having a hard time mustering up any feeling about it. Even annoyance seemed too difficult, and far away.
Everything felt far away.
It was time to play the dad, but without Rita... A piece of his costume was missing. She had fulfilled his perfect lie. No doubt Astor had seen through the holes in his mask, but she was wrong. Dexter did care, in a terrifying real way. Pretending had become the lie, so many months ago.
Dexter's true human form, revealed - forty years too late.
