First Person (entry type):

I can smell the high levels of stress before I can hear the quickened heart beat. The deep gulp he takes in his throat before he knocks on the door. I know he is there before he makes his presence known. For the sake of normalcy I do not move from where I stand in front of the window until the knock. One less strike against X-23. One more point for Laura.

It does not take long to realize that Cyclops is not here to talk to Laura, though. He is here for X-23. He does not need a student. He needs a weapon.

He hesitates. He cannot ask me the final question. He goes on. About Matthew Risman. About the Purifiers. About mutantkind. About extinction. About survival. He is justifying himself. He is justifying this question. Not to me, though. We both know I do not need it.

I break him off midsentence. I say yes. What else would I say? No need to make Cyclops ask the question. He is wasting both our times by prolonging it. So I answer the unspoken question.

I can feel my blood pressure increase. I can hear my heart thud in my chest. The feeling is not fear, though. It is something close to excitement. It is X-23. It is not Laura. I try to tell myself this, but the truth is that I cannot tell the difference between the two. Was there ever a Laura?

I am sorry mother.
They do not need Laura. They need X-23.
