Yu Narukami | Persona 4: The Animation | Reserved

SPOILERS for the True Ending of Persona 4

Character Notes:

History:

► The series begins with Narukami's transfer to Inaba from a larger city; his parents' working situation led him to have to stay with his uncle Dojima and cousin Nanako.

► He meets and shakes the hand of a gas station attendant. This is important, I promise.

► Shortly after transferring into Yasogami High, he meets Yosuke Hanamura, Chie Satonaka, and Yukiko Amagi.

► Around the same time are the murders of an announcer named Mayumi Yamano and a girl named Saki Konishi, who Yosuke had a crush on. Both were found dead after having been seen on the Midnight Channel, a superstition that was believed to show you the face of your soulmate if you looked at a blank TV screen at (you guessed it) midnight.

► While seeing Saki in the screen shortly before her death, Narukami discovered his hand could pass through the TV screen; after narrowly avoiding being sucked in completely, he tells Yosuke and Chie about this highly irregular occurrence.

► Though the two are skeptical at first, a trip to Junes department store's electronics section and a big-screen TV quickly prove that yes, Narukami can apparently stick his hand into TV screens and yes, he can in fact go further than that. The three of them fall through the screen into another world.

► While searching for the exit, the group meets a pun-spouting bear named Teddie and are eventually confronted by Shadows, at which point Narukami obtains the Persona Izanagi to fight them before Teddie leads them to an exit.

► When next they explore the world behind the TV and whatever connections it has to Yamano's and Konishi's murders, it's discovered that Shadows manifest into the form of those within the world (with the strange exception of Narukami himself), taking on their hidden traits and desires. The first of these they encounter is Shadow Yosuke, who claims Yosuke was investigating Konishi's murder just because it was something entertaining to do in a quiet little country town.

► Shadow Yosuke was defeated and accepted as a part of Yosuke he would previously not admit to having; in doing so it transformed into the Persona Jiraya as well as earned Narukami the Magician Arcana from which he could eventually summon a new Persona, Pyro, Jack.

► As time went on, several more people entered the TV world, confronted their Shadows, and unlocked their Personas in a search to uncover the truth behind the murders as well as the Midnight Channel; Chie Satonaka, Yukiko Amagi, Kanji Tatsumi, Rise Kujikawa, Teddie, and Naoto Shirogane. As Yu befriended new people each with their own Arcana, he became able to summon gradually tougher Personas, even fusing them into ones that were stronger still.

► Following the game, the series so far is up to episode 21; the person behind kidnapping and throwing Yukiko, Kanji, Rise, and Naoto into the TV world leaves a note in Narukami's mailbox telling him to stop saving people, revealing that he knows who is stopping whatever his plans might be. As this follows the game, it stands to reason that Nanako will be kidnapped and throwin in next, leading to a confrontation with the kidnapper and ultimately the decision on whether or not he deserves to be thrown through the TV himself for what he's done.

► It also stands to reason that the anime will eventually lead to the True Ending of the game, in which it is revealed that the 'culprit' Namatame was being unknowingly manipulated by the real murderer, a young detective named Tohru Adachi. The two of them as well as Narukami were given the power of Persona and the ability to use televisions as the gateway into the other world by the goddess Izanami, who manifested in disguise as a gas station attendant.

► Izanami gave the three of them this power as part of a game; Namatame representing emptiness, Adachi representing despair, and Narukami representing hope. Whichever emerged victorious in her eyes would be seen as humanity's prevailing quality, and since Adachi outmaneuvered the party until nearly the very end, Izanami decided to end what she saw as a world filled with despair.

► Narukami and the rest of the party, upon discovering the truth of the situation, enter the TV world once more in pursuit of Izanami and defeat her to save humanity, in doing so clearing the fog and Shadows from both worlds for a happy resolution.
