History:
Not much is canonly known about Agent Coulson before his days with S.H.I.E.L.D. but certain things can definitely be inferred. Given the responsibilities he is given for intiating contact with new people/items of interest to S.H.I.E.L.D. He works closely with Director Nick Fury and is quick to follow whatever orders that the Director assigns him.

Coulson is first seen shortly after Tony Stark's escape from being held hostage in the desert and tries valiantly, though quite politely, to set up a meeting with the egocentric and brilliant billionaire. He is put off time and time again by Tony and his personal assistant, Pepper. But this does not deter him. Eventually, he happens to be in the right place at the right time when Pepper discovers the malicious intent and plans of Obadiah Staine. Without hesiitating, Coulson and several other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents move in to apprehend Stane. Of course, his Iron Monger suit was a bit unexpected and the ensuing battle a bit brutal. Luckily Tony Stark and the Ironman suit show up. Much fighting ensues, much of it out of Coulson's and the other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents' hands.

Of course, once the battle is over, Coulson is quite central in picking up the pieces. He puts together the cover story for what happened -- both in regards to Stane's less-than-pleasant end and Stark's alibi for all that had gone on. Of course, Tony completely shatters the carefully crafted cover story and Coulson gets to try to assemble things into some order once more.

By the second Ironman movie, Coulson finds himself tasked with playing babysitter to Tony Stark. He demonstrates a fairly effective tough love style that involves threatening to taser his somewhat difficult charge and watch reality tv with zero remorse. However, babysitting duty is interrupted when a call comes in from Director Fury. Coulson is then dispatched to New Mexico to investigate an object that has fallen to earth.

On the way there, however, Coulson finds himself in a situation where he isn't backed up by other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents or coordinating a cadre of superheroes. He stops in at a gas station and minimart to pick up a snack only to find himself in the middle of a robbery. He handles himself with a remarkable calmness, volunteering to give up his gun even if they didn't know he had one to begin with. This is a ruse, however, and in the next instant he disarms the two gun-bearing men with a bag of flour and a fairly acrobatic sort of move the Spartans from 300 would be fairly impressed by. Threat neutralized, the man buys his damn donuts and heads on to the next mission.

The object that has drawn S.H.I.E.L.D.'s attention turns out to be Mjolnir -- the hammer of Thor. Coulson spearheads the project to set up a perimeter and contain the artifact. He also seizes the research and data of Jane Foster. Later he encounters Thor (whose powers have been stripped by Odin) and takes him into custody to interrogate. When Thor is sprung by his friends using a falsified identity, Coulson allows him to leave despite knowing that the story is bogus, though he does send a couple agents to keep an eye on things.

Later, battle and violence break out again and Coulson finds himself quite squarely in the fray. Eventually he comes to something of an agreement with Thor, though the god of thunder flies off to Coulson's protests that he hasn't been debriefed yet.

After Thor returns to Asgard, Couslon goes back to business as usual at S.H.I.E.L.D. -- which is everything but usual. At his canon point, things are just gearing up to go a bit crazy. The Avengers are bit by bit being assembled.

Personality:
Coulson comes across as largely no nonsense. He does not have much patience for stupidity or arrogance, especially when they stand in the way of his doing his job. As such he has a bit of a butting of heads with certain characters -- notably Tony Stark.

However, Coulson is also rather patient, as long as he needs to be. In the Ironman movie he approaches Pepper time and time again to set up a chance to debrief Stark about his experience. He also shows a great deal of restraint and patiences when Thor breaks into the makeshift compound constructed around the grounded Mjolnir. He sends Agent Barton up to be ready to shoot the rampaging Thor, but holds off on giving the order even after Thor pummels his way through all the agents on the ground. Though he does seem to show an almost dark side when he begins questioning Thor, it's a momentary sort of thing. Just as soon after, Coulson releases him and chooses to have him followed to see what can be learned. This further willingness to wait and see how things pan out is further evidence of the fact that he is a methodical, patient sort, willing to wait if he thinks there is something that can be gained from this waiting.

Coulson is also, however, a man of action. Even if he's willing to let things play out, if there is something that needs his attention, he is quick to provide it. He doesn't hesitate when there is danger to jump into the fray -- even if sometimes he is a bit out matched. Despite this fact, that he's something of an everyman in a land of super heroes and beings with powers that far surpass those of mere mortal men, Coulson does not flinch. With the exception of physically taking cover when things begin exploding, there is very little physical indication that anything catches him off guard. He is composed and a consummate professional. After all, the last thing he wants to do is let S.H.I.E.L.D. or Fury down. He takes his job and duties very seriously, even when those duties lead to him playing the role of glorified babysitter to certain heroes who have a bit of a diva in them.

That said, despite the fact that he does take his duties seriously, Coulson also has a rather sharp and dry sense of humor. He's quick to offer off-handed threats (like tasing Tony Stark and watching Supernanny while he twitches on the ground) that he may or may not really mean. He takes his work very seriously, but seems to take himself at least somewhat less seriously -- especially when time and again he's informed that the Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement Logistics Division needs to work on its name, a fact that he acknowledges and seems quite pleased to inform Pepper has been changed to simply S.H.I.E.L.D. by the end of the first Ironman movie.

His sense of humor is on display again in two of the shorts that Marvel produced that happen in the time between the main movies -- The Consultant and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer. In the first, he is shown talking with a colleague, absolutely horrified about having to consider usign "the consultant" in an attempt to annoy someone into making a decision they want made a certain way. Even in A Funny Thing, he ends the sudden and swift takedown of the two armed robbers by telling the frightened clerk that to explain to the police, she ought to tell them that the Tae Bo videos have been paying off.

In general, Agent Coulson seems a serious, capable and quick-witted sort of man who takes his job and his responsibilities quite serious. He's a fairly normal guy (though he's been shown to be quite good at physical combat) surrounded by a world of abnormal. He rolls with the punches and doesn't let anything perturb him very much, or at least if it does, he doesn't allow anyone to see this, keeping his reactions measured and otherwise to himself. He tends to get a bit annoyed with some of the more extravagant and arrogant personalities sometimes displayed by the memebers of the Avengers, but in the end he has faith in S.H.I.E.L.D. and the men he works with.

Other: As a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson is almost always armed -- with both firearms and several handy dandy little devices, such as those that open doors that otherwise might be closed.

First Person (entry type):
All right. This needs to stop. I don't know who is behind it, and I'm going to be the bigger man here and not make an issue of it. So long as my property is returned, I don't see any reason to make a bigger deal of it than it is.

But right now it's a deal. Whoever thought it was funny, fine, great. I get the joke. Now I need my ties back. Standard S.H.I.E.L.D. issue is black. Plain black. It matches all the suits, fits the stuffy government image. It's actually pretty crucial.

So whoever thought the Hawaiian patterns and floral options and kitties were funny, great. But they're not helpful. ...I do sort of like this one though. It looks a little like a certain shield. Maybe I'll keep that one.

The others though, those can go back where they came from.

And my property can be returned. For now, my offer of overlooking the infraction if they are returned stands. But if not, well, I will find my things. I don't like making things personal, but my ties are serious business.

Third Person:

Coulson was not having a good day. This in and of itself wasn't out of the ordinary. Life had its challenges. And he rose to meet them whenever he could. Sometimes this rising was easier than others. At the moment, he was having a bit of difficulty.

He lifted his coffee cup, hesitating before it made it all the way to his lips. The cup was held poised, and he frowned just a bit. Huh. His eyes scanned down to the report in front of him. Paperwork. It was the least enjoyable part of his job. He was pretty certain that he'd rather be dodging bullets, dodging bullets, even dodging Tony Stark than having to finish writing up this current report. Luckily he didn't have to do it often.

But today. Oh today. His eyes narrowed just slightly at the form in front of him. Progress report. What progress? Now his coffee cup finished the rest of its journey to his lips and he sipped thoughtfully, wincing at the heat of the beverage.

Progress.

He could do that. The Avenger Initiative. Things were going well...ish. The candidates were lined up. And of course, Romanoff and Barton were more or less already in order. The former more than the latter. Ok. He could begin there. ...Stark was another matter. Stark was always another matter. He set the coffee cup down and lifted a hand to pinch at the bridge of his nose. They hadn't recommended him for the initiative. But it was an inevitability, wasn't it? They were kidding themselves to think he wouldn't be involved.

He'd need to stock up on ibuprofen for that eventuality. Oh yes, so much ibuprofen. He pursed his lips. Actually, this report was coming together. It didn't have to be good news. Fury would understand.

Right? Maybe. Probably.

Well, he'd have to. The world wasn't perfect. Coulson did his best. Would do his best. And they got by pretty damn well. And there had been threats. Lots of threats. Lots of threats mitigated with... well, mostly efficiency. Yeah. By and large efficiency. In fact, he was going to eliminate the qualifiers. Efficiency. There. Who was going to argue with him?

No one, that was who.
