History:
Before we get to Mikasa's personal history, a few notes about her world are in order. Like the fact that about a hundred years ago humanity was almost driven to extinction by giant man-eating humanoids they call titans. Yeah, that's kind of notable. Humanity came to live within three rings of massive walls which are implied to be somewhere in this world's Europe- Wall Maria (the outermost), Wall Rose, and Wall Sina (the innermost, and home to heads of government and other officials). The two outermost walls contained various towns, farmland, and natural resources, while the innermost contains one large town, natural resources, and the highest ground.

Mikasa was born to parents who lived on a homestead near one of the gate towns of Wall Maria. Her mother was the last living human from Asia (presumably Japan, considering the name she gave her daughter). Mikasa had a somewhat isolated but happy childhood. She loved her parents.

Until, when she was eleven, a group of three human traffickers attacked their home, killed her parents, and kidnapped her, intending to sell her on the black market.

But that day was also the day a certain Dr. Jaeger was due to visit the household, and he happened to bring along his son, the 11-year-old Eren. When they discovered the bodies of the Ackermans, Dr. Jaeger sent Eren to get help, but instead Eren checked out a nearby abandoned homestead, which happened to be where the traffickers were keeping Mikasa at the moment. Eren came in, pretending to be lost, and managed to kill the two men in the room with Mikasa, and then to free her. The third man, however, easily got the better of Eren, and started to strangle the boy. Eren urged Mikasa, who had been more or less frozen with shock throughout the entire incident, to fight. She picked up the knife he had dropped and, after a moment of realization that the way of the world was to kill or be killed, stabbed the last man in the heart.

After this incident, the Jaegers became Mikasa's foster family. She grew to be a part of the family, and was particularly close to Eren. She also became friends with Eren's friend Armin. Unfortunately, this was only to last for a year.

No one had any reason to think that the walls could fail. But then, the colossal titan appeared, a titan taller than even the wall, which took out the gate with one kick and vanished. And the titans poured through Wall Maria, destroying homes and eating whoever they found. Dr. Jaeger was out working that day, but his wife was. A local member of the Stationary Troops was able to save Mikasa and Eren, and get them to the evacuation, but Mrs. Jaeger was trapped under part of the house and couldn't be saved. At least, not in the time before she was eaten.

So Mikasa had lost her family, and almost all of her foster family. Dr. Jaeger proved to be missing after that day, and no one has seen him since.

Eren, Mikasa, and Armin all ended up doing hard work on farms inside Wall Rose, as part of efforts to make up for the arable land lost along with Wall Maria, and because frankly there was nowhere else to put most of the refugees. When they turned fourteen, all three enlisted in the military and began training (yeah, you can enter the military at fourteen. things are kind of messed up, you may have noticed.)

If accepted, I would be pulling Mikasa from her last year of training- a year before canon proper (with the attack on Wall Rose) starts.

Personality:
It hit me that living was like a miracle. And in that instant, my body stopped trembling. From that moment, I was able to perfectly control myself. I thought I could do anything.
...
This is a cruel world, and only the winners survive.

It's implied that before the death of her parents, Mikasa was a fairly normal child. Somewhat reserved and isolated, maybe, but curious, responsive, and expressive. She is not that child now. Mikasa is quiet, stoic, and overwhelmingly controlled.

It would be a bit of an exaggeration to say that Mikasa's approach to life is based entirely on Eren's words to her during their fight with the last human trafficker- "Fight! If you don't fight, we're gonna die. If you win, we live. If you don't fight, we can't win." But it wouldn't be that much of one. Mikasa is a level-headed person (one of the ways to tell if she's actually upset is to see if she's neglecting things like logistics), and tends to be the voice of practicality in the group of three that Eren, Armin, and her make up. But in spite of that, she has a total disregard for the odds being against her in more or less any kind of confrontation. She fights to live. Giving up would be a form of death. But this is really a personal thing, a lack of regard for her own safety. She'll risk herself without a second thought, but if someone she cares about (like Eren) seems to be ignoring the odds against them, she's likely to try to dissuade them (though she'll still back them up if they go against her advice).

Mikasa's not really a people person. She has a very few who are close to her, a few more who she respects or will at least listen to, and others she really neither likes or dislikes. It can take a lot of impressive action or planning to earn Mikasa's respect, and the ways of getting close to her seem to more or less be a) do something incredibly drastic for her (i.e. Eren) or b) be a close friend of Eren's (i.e. Armin). She is, overall, very self-contained. She rarely starts conversations or seeks out new company. She does, though, understand that she lives and works in a group setting, and if the situation calls for it she'll engage the group thoroughly (would a tough love inspiring speech help you not freeze up and get eaten? Mikasa will provide.). She also does have a subtle sense of humor that comes out in some of her interactions with the others in her training class. Mikasa has a bit of a habit of slightly trolling Sasha, doing things like pretending to agree to give Sasha food for a moment and then eating it herself. (This is about as funny as the series ever gets. It is more body-a-minute than laugh-a-minute.)

She is extremely devoted to her personal goals and beliefs, and if that puts her in opposition to military or civilian law, well, screw the law. She believes she has something an obligation to protect others, and doesn't really see why threatening people with murder in order to get more people to safety would ever be a problem. But while she does have this altruistic function when she's operating on her own, it's a completely different matter when people she cares about are involved. It is Mikasa's personal goals that ultimately motivate her, which makes her fundamentally selfish in a way. She's intent on protecting her "family," Eren, and her friend Armin. If that means potentially fighting the rest of the goddamn army, she'll do it.

The most important thing in the world to Mikasa is family. Family is happiness, family is what warmth there is in the world. There are hints that she might have romantic feelings for Eren, but as far as what's actually canon, the way she expresses his importance to her is "he's family." Mikasa's not a dreamer. She's not an idealist. She just wants to be able to keep what she values most. Fortunately, she is well-equipped to do that by killing titans.

This is a cruel world. And yet, so beautiful.

Other:
Mikasa is canonically totally ripped. This is very relevant information.

First Person (entry type):
[handwritten journal entry]

My right leg is stronger than the left. I need to start exercising in the morning to make it stronger. Wake up a quarter hour earlier. I must be favoring the right sometimes- watch for that and make sure it doesn't happen again. Be careful about arms, too.

Armin's grip strength is weak- remember to teach him exercises for that. The instructors won't. He'll never pass the physical tests if he drops his swords.

Out of thread again. If Eren and Armin don't have any I have to get some from supplies tomorrow to repair the torn jacket before the spare gets torn.

Third Person:
They called her a "natural," when they thought she wouldn't hear and risk getting a big head. Even a natural can make mistakes. Even a natural can die.

It was true that she was stronger than most. But her skill with the three-dimensional maneuverability gear and fighting was less, she thought, about "natural" talent and more about paying attention. It was about knowing where your body was, how to take enough weight off of one area to free up another, how to start and how to stop. It was about control. That was what you needed to win.

She cleaned her gear carefully, taking more time than some of the others. Jean and Annie just did the minimum for it to function and left for the dining hall. Sasha tried to be more diligent, but she was never one to let many get to food before her. But Mikasa, and others, lingered. Their lives could depend on these machines. There was nothing "natural" about it.

Or maybe there was. The prey adapted to become harder to prey upon. The predator adapted as well. That was documented in nature, though it wasn't always successful.

She held her gear up to the light. Yes, that was clean now.
