Character Notes: History: --> Ranka's first appearance in the series is when she literally bumps into the protagonist, Alto Saotome. She thinks he's a beautiful girl at first (there's a reason his nickname's "Princess"), but quickly learns her mistake. They talk for as Alto prepares for his job as a pilot stuntman for Sheryl Nome's concert. They get along famously and they part on good terms before the concert.
--> Fast-forward to about halfway through the concert and its abrupt interruption by aliens attacking Frontier. Alto has the misfortune of seeing a fighter pilot ripped out of his cockpit and killed by an alien outside of the arena. Even worse is that there's a civilian in danger--Ranka. He jumps into the now empty plane despite his inexperience to save his new friend. Stupid, yes; heroic, yes. Ranka is saved.
--> Another fast-forward. Ranka is approached by a young woman to take her around Frontier and the two spend the day together quite happily. They run into Alto on one of the many observation decks. Ranka beings to sing one of Sheryl's songs and the woman asks her if she's a fan. She responds that Sheryl is her idol. Alto comes across the two of them and it's then that the woman reveals her true identity--Sheryl Nome. Ranka is understandably freaked out that she's been talking with the galaxy's biggest pop star. Cue another alien attack and all of them hunker down in the emerengency shelter for safety where awkward funtimes occur. The leader of the fighter pilot group that fights the aliens, Ozma Lee (Ranka's brother), is injured during the battle. Alto visits him afterwards to check on him and there, Ozma tells Alto the truth behind Ranka's past.
--> Ranka is not originally from Macross Frontier. She and her family lived on Macross Global which was a ship attached to the 117th Large Scale Research Fleet. During one of Ozma's early missions, he responded to an attack by aliens known as the Vajra on Global. The entire ship was destroyed and Ranka was the only survivor. Ozma returned to Frontier, took in the young Ranka, and raised her as his little sister. She has unconsciously blocked all her memories of the events because of how traumatic they were and has absolutely no idea that the Vajra who are now attacking Frontier are the ones who are responsible for killing her family. In stressful situations, she suffers from sudden flashes of memories and goes into a panic. Ozma has no intention of telling her and asks Alto to do the same. Alto relucltanly agrees with Ranka's well-being in mind.
--> In the present, life goes on. Sheryl continues her concert, Alto joins the military group that Ozma captains (known as the SMS), and Ranka decides to go after her dream of becoming a singer. She enters the annual beauty pagaent Miss Macross in the hopes that she'll be noticed by a talent scout. She's nervous; she's going against much older women and she's naturally shy in front of large crowds. She gives herself a personal pep-talk; it gets a bit of an extra punch when Sheryl, who's on the panel as a guest judge, tells her to go out there and give it her all. Ranka is also pushed to do her best by the presence of Alto in the crowd. Unfortunately, he's pulled away at the last second by a Vajra attack in another part of space. Her performance is markedly different when she notices he's not there: before, she's inwardly nervous and outwardly confident; after, it's the the extreme opposite. Ranka makes it to the finals, but ultimately loses.
--> Ranka is in low spirits after Miss Macross. It doesn't help that she and Ozma have an argument over her decision to pursue a career as a singer. She runs out of the house and later, she's found by one of Michel, one of Alto's teammates. He decides to treat her to ice cream at the mall in an attempt to cheer her up. There, he tells her the simple truth: she can wallow in her sadness or face the challenge. He asks her to sing, right there in the mall, surrounded by thousands of people. She's terrified at first, but in the end, she ends up blowing everyone away. Someone definitely notices.
