Character: Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy Fandom: Star Trek XI Character Notes:BEWARE OF SPOILERS AHEAD History: Leonard McCoy was born on June 12, 2227 to Dr. David McCoy (Doctor of Internal Medicine) and Eleanora McCoy (Midwife) in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. He had a fairly normal childhood, growing up in a quiet suburb just a few minutes drive from the main city. He understood that his parents were busy people and was set from an early age to become a great doctor 'Just like daddy!' But whenever Dr. and Mrs. McCoy were home, they made sure to spend as much time as possible with their little boy. When Leonard was 15, his mother left to go visit her colleagues in New York. He and his father were waiting at the port for her shuttlecraft to touch down back in Atlanta when tragedy struck. They watched in abject horror as the shuttlecraft crashed and incinerated right before their eyes. This put a strained relationship between father and son as the years passed by and cemented Leonard's complete and utter distrust of shuttlecrafts and flying. He entered and graduated from Ole Miss' medical school. When he was doing his residency, Leonard met and fell in love with a woman named Jocelyn. She was his greatest love and he was convinced right then and there that she was his soul mate. So upon completing his residency, he married her and the two had a beautiful daughter named Joanna.
Not all was well in the McCoy household. Leonard's father, David, fell ill with an excruciatingly painful and incurable disease. Leonard tried everything in his power: researching nonstop, round the clock shifts, calling research facility after research facility for any type of cure. The long hours put a strain on his marriage and pushed him further and further away from Jocelyn. Finally, David asked his son to put him out of his misery. After he had ended his father's life, he went on a downward spiral, throwing himself into his work. One day, he came home to find Jocelyn's bags packed and paperwork for a divorce on the kitchen table. Embittered, he went through the proceedings until he was barely left with the clothes on his back. With nothing to his name, he decided to join Starfleet. When he climbed onto that shuttle in Riverside, Iowa, he met a young man who would become his best friend: Jim Kirk, who christened him with a new nickname: Bones.
Despite his aviophobia, Bones went through Starfleet Medical training and became a Lieutenant Commander. He was the top of his class in anatomical and forensic pathology and lead the first aviophobia seminar. Unfortunately, his education was cut short by a distress call from Vulcan. Thus the Nero Incident unfolded. He snuck Jim onto the Enterprise and witnessed most of his classmates be killed off. Following an attack on the ship itself, Bones instantly became the Chief Medical Officer on the Enterprise. While his position dictated that he should've been in medical, Bones found himself on the bridge often to speak with Jim or Spock about important matters, be it following Nero's ship around or an attack on the pissed off Romulan. It was he who managed to undo most of the nerve damage Captain Pike suffered at the hands of Nero. Upon their safe return to Earth, Jim was appointed Captain of the Enterprise and handpicked Bones to be the Chief Medical Officer.
