Very little is known about Eames’ history before the movie Inception begins. He’s clearly worked in dream extraction teams before and is considered to be an excellent forger. It’s stated that he has worked with Dom Cobb and Arthur in the past, but has also worked alongside other teams as well. He lives in Mombasa, Kenya, but it’s not clear why or how he ended up there.
Mombasa is where Cobb recruits Eames to help in his attempt to cause Robert Fischer, the son of an energy tycoon, to break up his father’s business. Eames is recruited because he’s a forger: he can transform into other people within dreams. When they arrive in Paris, Eames helps the team with the psychological aspect of their task, helping them simplify the idea and also appealing to Fischer.
When the team enters the dream levels with Fischer, Eames forges himself as Fischer’s godfather, Peter Browning. In the first dream level, Fischer is made to think he is being kidnapped along with Browning; Eames makes it appear as though Browning is being tortured. He also plants seeds of doubt into Fischer’s mind about Browning, while also trying to reinforce positive feelings about Fischer’s father.
In the second layer of the dream, Eames forges himself as an attractive date for Fischer, who leaves him the numbers he will later use as a safe combination. In the third layer, Eames is tasked with guiding Fischer through a fortress to the safe; when Fischer goes into limbo with Cobb and Ariadne, Eames protects the fort from onslaught from Fischer’s subconscious while also rigging its foundations with explosives, so that the other three would get the “kick” needed to awake from the dream level.
After the mission ends, Eames arrives in Los Angeles with the rest of the team successfully.
Personality:
Eames is a very laid-back, casual individual. Even in the midst of intense shootouts and chases, he finds a way to make light of the situation or make a snarky comment. He likes to enjoy himself and have a good time, and happens to love what he does for a living. Throughout the movie, he makes a habit of joking throughout and teasing his coworkers (such as hitting on Saito while forged as Fischer’s date). Eames also enjoys gambling very much; his totem (an item for telling whether you’re in a dream or reality) is a poker chip.
