Character: Charlotte A. Cavatica Fandom: Charlotte's Web Character Notes: History: Not much is known about Charlotte's history beyond the events of the book. She lives in the barn of a farm owned by a man named Zuckerman, and judging by the ways in which she interacts with the other animals, it's likely that she's been there for a while-- possibly for her entire life.
One day, farmer Zuckerman buys a pig-- called Wilbur-- from his young niece, Fern. Charlotte watches him for a time, and decides that she likes him-- so she introduces herself and the two become friends. Unfortunately, a sheep that has been on the farm for many years gives Wilbur some bad news: he's being kept to be fattened up, and then he'll be slaughtered and eaten.
Distraught, Wilbur goes to Charlotte, asking her if what the sheep says is true. Though she doesn't know for sure herself (likely not having yet been born when the last pig was kept at Zuckerman farms), she believes the sheep, and promises Wilbur that she will not let him die. Though she doesn't know yet how she will save his life, she's confident that she will come up with something.
Eventually, Charlotte gets the idea to spin complementary words in her web that hangs in the barn doorway above Wilbur's pen-- first "some pig", then "terrific", then "radiant", and finally "humble". Thinking it a miracle, people come from far and wide to see the sight, and conclude that he must be a miraculous and special pig. The story culminates in a trip to the country fair, where Wilbur wins a special prize made created just for him, and he, Charlotte, Fern, and the rest of the animals become certain that Zuckerman would never kill and eat the animal that inspired "miracles" and brought him such fame.
By this time, Charlotte is very old and tired. She creates an egg sac (she calls it her "magnum opus"; apparently spiders know what Latin is in Charlotte's Web), the laying of which saps the last bit of her strength-- by the time she's finished, she can't even manage to climb back down into Wilbur's crate to return to the farm. She dies alone, after everyone has left.
