Re: Katara - Avatar: The Last Airbender 2/4

Character: Katara
Fandom:Avatar: The Last Airbender
Character Notes:
History: Katara was born a Waterbender in a tiny southern Water Tribe. Despite the world being in crisis due to the attacking Fire Nation, she lived in relative peace until her mother was killed when Katara was eight. Four years later, her father left in an attempt to aid the struggling resistance against the invading forces of the Fire Nation. Katara spent her days cooking, cleaning, sewing, and occasionally going with Sokka, her brother, to fish for the village.

It was on one such excursion that she and Sokka discovered a boy trapped in an iceburg. Through the use of waterbending skills that were weak and clumsy at the very best, she managed to accidentally break the icy enclosure and free Aang, the Avatar who had been in stasis for a century. With the approval of their grandmother and the feeling that this was just the beginning to something much bigger, Katara and Sokka began on a journey to master the elements with Aang.

The three of them began a journey to the North Pole in hopes of finding a waterbending master to help Aang and Katara master their respective waterbending abilities. It wasn't a quick or easy trek. At both the Southern Air Temple and at an Earthbending village locked in a Fire Nation police state, Katara and friends again witness firsthand the cruelty and ruthlessness of their enemies.

The trip did nothing if bring the group closer together. Katara admired both Aang's resolve and his talent for airbending, even if she did experience a minor bout of jealousy when his natural aptitude for bending allowed him initially to pick up new techniques much more quickly than her. She saw a lot of both herself and her brother in the boy Avatar and welcomed him happily into their family.

It took some work, but upon arriving at the North Pole, Katara was able to convince the Master there to train both her and Aang. She ultimately excelled under his tutelage, surpassing the students she trained alongside with.

Not long after the group's arrival in the Northern Water Tribe, however, the Fire Nation launched an attack in an attempt to conquer what had been the untouchable settlement on the North Pole. With Aang's help, the Fire Nation was eventually defeated, with Katara named as the Avatar's new waterbending master.

When the three left the North Pole, Aang's search for an Earthbending teacher began. After a few hiccups with teachers that didn't really pan out, they eventually discovered a young, blind girl - Toph - who had mastered the art years ago. She joins the party, and after the initial relief of finding a competent Earthbender, Katara's emotions regarding Toph generally waffled between annoyance and sisterly affection.
