It is likely that he has lived in Lothlorien his entire life, though nothing is known of his parentage or younger years. We do know that he has two brothers, Orophin and Rumil, though birth order is never confirmed. (There are several indicators that Haldir may be eldest, but this is speculation and falls more under head-canon) At some stage, he became first a border guard of Lothlorien (along with his brothers) and then Marchwarden. Given that he is the only one of the three brothers who can speak Westron (the Common tongue), and based on his dialogue in Fellowship of the Ring, some of his duties must have entailed travelling further afield to gather news that might otherwise not reach the woods and it is thus fair to assume he has spent significant time away from Lothlorien.
In 3019, during the Third Age of Middle Earth, Haldir encountered the Fellowship of the Ring – the group entrusted with the destruction of the One Ring. He, along with his brothers, intercepted the group at the borders and as the only one who understood Westron, Haldir became spokesperson and chief guide to them. He agreed, after consulting with Legolas and Aragorn, to lead the party into Lorien itself but under the condition that their Dwarf companion, Gimli, was led blindfolded. He and his brothers then arranged somewhere for the group to rest and kept guard over them, intercepting a passing band of orcs and leading them away from the Fellowship.
The following morning, Haldir led the group towards Lorien. He remained insistent that Gimli were blindfolded, still mindful of the ongoing enmity between Elves and Dwarves; this led to the entire party being blindfolded until word arrived that the group was welcome to travel freely within Lorien. Once he received this order, Haldir apologised to Gimli and welcomed him, remarking that he was the first Dwarf to enter Lorien since Durin’s time. Having led them to Caras Galadhon, where they were to meet with Galadriel and Celeborn, Haldir remained present during the Fellowship’s audience with the Lord and Lady of Lorien but returned to the northern borders through the rest of their stay.
The last known of Haldir is that he returned to lead the Fellowship to the banks of the Silverlode when it became time for them to depart. It is probably that he was present during the defence of Lothlorien against forces from Dol Guldur; if he survived the War of the Ring then he likely travelled to the Undying Lands with the rest of his kin although it is equally possible that he assisted Celeborn during his rule of East Lorien.
NB: In movie canon, Haldir is present during the battle of Helm’s Deep, having been sent by Elrond and Galadriel along with a group of skilled Elven warriors to offer their assistance. During this battle, Haldir is killed along with most if not all of the group he led.
