Hell, what a day. First off Jim decides to set me up with a cute little ensign -- without telling me. And yeah, she’s cute, but most of all she’s snarky, so he’s not just throwing me at anyone with boobs, which I appreciate. But I’m not exactly looking for a partner right now. I’ve got too much to do with sorting out this sickbay. I haven’t been CMO for long, and I need to put my stamp on things. No matter what Chris Chapel says, that doesn’t mean reverting back to doing surgery with rotgut and fishing twine. Just because I’m not that fond of computers doesn’t mean I think every advance of the last five hundred years is bad.
So, having the aforementioned cute little ensign show up on one of my biobeds with a love letter to me temporarily tattooed on her stomach was not the best way to start the day.
Remind me to move Jim’s physical forward. I think he needs the full range of tests this time. Say, didn’t he have a case of Tyrellian two-step not that long ago? That gives me a few ideas.
Third Person:
McCoy tossed the folder onto the desk and sank down into his chair. He swore under his breath, leaning back to put first one foot, then the other, up onto the desk. He folded his arms, and stared at the door.
And soon enough, Jim arrived. What the hell was it with him? McCoy knew damn well the kid wasn’t psychic. He’d seen the test results.
“Spill,” Jim said, plopping himself down in the other chair.
McCoy glared at him.
Jim raised his eyebrows.
McCoy sighed, abruptly taking his feet off the corner of the desk to let them thump onto the floor. “I lost Resset.”
Jim’s face creased in sympathy. McCoy looked away. He knew the kid was just trying to be nice, but right now he didn’t want sympathy .Couldn’t deal with sympathy. He needed to be yelled at. “Happens, Bones.”
“Not to me. Not when it was just an infected goddamn spider bite.”
Jim paused. McCoy tensed, waiting for it. “What do you want me to say? That you failed? That the kid deserved better? Yeah, I know you failed, Bones. But I also know that you were up till all hours the last three days researching every possible antitoxin and synthesizing your own, and I know that Resset went into Security well aware of the risks. I wish he hadn’t died. He was a good guy. But you didn’t fail because of lack of effort or lack of care, and I’m not about to blame you for it.”
McCoy thought about that for a while, then he finally exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck. “. . .yeah, I guess.”
“You know I’m right. I’m awesome.”
McCoy didn’t even have to look up to know exactly what expression Jim would be wearing. The smirk to end all smirks.
