First Person (entry type):

Whilst researching for the upcoming performance by the Night Flight Drama Club, I wasn’t quite expecting to find a community combining drama and ducks... Tell me, is this the name of another drama club? Perhaps... from outside the island? If I am correct, I would be very interested to hear from you.

[Typed and deleted.]I am unable to leave this island myself. While it isn’t a bad place, it does become tiring living every day here, knowing I’m trapped. Any news from the outside makes life just that little bit more interesting.

Well, since I’m here now and the others are in town, I think I’ll look around for a while. My name is Sugata. It is a pleasure to meet you all.

Third Person:

Sugata liked the beach. It was the furthest he could get to leaving the island, the absolute edge of his allowed territory. He stared off across the ocean, tossing a few pebbles into the water and watching them skip across the surface. The beach was primarily sand, but he had gathered some pebbles from near the treeline behind him. After a while he heard someone approaching. He looked towards the sound, seeing Keito Nichi walking across the sand towards him. He was unsure what to make of her appearance and so simply watched her come closer. She paused a moment at the sight of him. Only because seeing him reminded her of a time when the three of them used to wander these beaches together. But still, she approached now, nodding her head politely. “Sugata-kun”, she uttered blankly.

He nodded back to her, offering a slight smile. She was cold as she always was nowadays. “A nice day for the beach, isn't it?” he said, turning back to the ocean again and looking up at the sky as a brisk breeze rushed by. Small talk always helped in these awkward situations.

Keito looked out across the ocean at that, letting the wind blow through her hair as she watched the waves roll in and break along the sand. “We're lucky the weather is usually so nice.”

“Hm. It makes me wonder sometimes, why should we want to leave this island? We have everything we need here. It isn't such a bad place.” He had good friends, he enjoyed acting in the drama club and school wasn’t so bad either. Still, it didn’t stop him from wondering about a life across the ocean. A life in Tokyo or beyond.

Sugata Shindo (5/??)

“People like choices,” she answered simply, her head tilting down just slightly, but enough for the moon to glare off her glasses. “It doesn't matter if the original choice is better than the second option. They still just want the choice.”

Sugata looked over at that, pondering over her words. “Choices...” Like the freedom to choose who to marry. The freedom to choose where to live. He gave a slight laugh, smiling at her again. “I wonder what choices you would like to make, Keito.”

That seemed to snap Keito out of whatever thought had caught her mind. She looked up with a slightly confused look. “Ah...”, she let slip in surprise before she went back to her calm and composed self again, a slight smile on her lips. “There are lots of choices I would like to make.”

He bent down to take a pebble and tossed it into the sea again. “I'm sure everyone would have a lot of choices to make if they were given the freedom to take them”.

“....” Keito followed him and bent down to pick up a pebble of her own. She tried to toss it across the ocean but it sank on impact. She made a slight face of embarrassment at that. “Like the freedom to not skip pebbles...”

He watched her throw the pebble and smiled as he saw her failure, sensing her embarrassment. So he took another one, a medium-sized and flattened stone, and moved closer to her, coming up behind her. He tried to push the pebble into her hand. “Here. Like this.”

Well. That was unexpected. Keito took in a sharp breath as her cheeks blushed red, making her grateful that Sugata was standing behind her now and not in front of her. But she didn't refuse the pebble or the offer to help. “What now?” she asked.

“Now...” He positioned the stone correctly in her fingers, gently took her wrist and made her throw it in a side-ways arc. The pebble flew away, skipping once, twice, three times and a fourth and then sank.

“Oh.” She said simply at that, watching the rock and trying to focus on it rather than Sugata's hand on hers. “I think that is the first time I have ever done that... Thank you.”

He let go of her at that, coming to stand beside her. Not really looking at her either. “If you practice, it'll go further. Maybe one day it would reach the other side of the ocean,” he mused.

“Like Takuto-kun.” She said with a slight smile of amusement. “Our own pebble that skipped across the ocean to be with us.” And the one that opened so many more possibilities for the Glittering Crux.

That comment caught him off guard slightly. It was Wako and himself who had found the boy on the beach. Keito had shown little interest before, especially at school, so why should she be interested now? “Yes... Takuto Tsunashi.” He said, slowly. “The boy who swam across the sea to go to school. He is quite remarkable.”

Sugata Shindo (6/6)

“The three of you seem to get along well. It was you and Wako-san who found him, correct?” Keito looked at him now, still with that light smile, but this time she's distanced herself from them again. Sugata nodded, perhaps taking on a more distant demeanour himself now. “Wako to be precise. She sniffed him out and saved his life. It didn't take long to see the spark between them, even then.” He was still suspicious, still confused as to why Keito was asking.

“Does that bother you?” she asked. There were so many reasons to ask this question. As an interested member of Glittering Crux, for pure curiosity alone, for herself. “You two are promised to each other after all.”

“...” He seemed to hesitate at the question. Why did she need to know? Why did she care? It was true they had been friends long ago, but things were different now. But as usual he disguised his awkwardness and his suspicious thoughts with a winning smile. “I just want Wako to be happy. Takuto too.”

“And who's looking out for you, Sugata?” There was that look in her eyes now. It was hard to read, hard to explain, but there was something there. Almost like a knowing. Though it was impossible to tell what she knew and what it pertained to off of that information alone.

The smile faded at that look. He turned back to the ocean, as if trying to hide himself from her, to stop her from seeing into his own eyes. Why? She made him feel uncomfortable at the question. It was as if she was feeling him out, trying to manipulate him somehow. And with Samekh’s power within him, that was a very dangerous idea to think about. He gave a sigh. “We all look out for each other. And when that doesn't happen, I'm perfectly fine by myself.”

She noticed the way he looked away. An obvious tell of Sugata's when he was trying to hide something. But without any other cues, she couldn’t tell what exactly that was. Only guess at it. “You haven't changed.”

“Is that a bad thing?” He asked and seemed to soften slightly with her again. “Even if I haven't changed, things are already changing around me. I'm sure I'll have to adapt eventually”

She listened to him now, letting a slight silence fall between them, even if the waves were still flowing around them. “I never said it was a bad thing.” She answered him now before she turned on her heels to leave.

He looked up as she turned to go. Was he really surprised by that comment? Anyway it seemed that Keito had had enough for one night. He gave her a wave, even if she wouldn't see it. “I'll see you later then?”

“I'll see you in class,” she called back without turning to look.
