Character: Gopher
Fandom: Soul Eater
Character Notes:
History: The manga tells the readers very little about Gopher's background - with only one concrete fact: He was given a body by Noah. Who or what he was before that is a complete mystery.

As far as the plot goes... Gopher is a relatively new character introduced in Chapter 62, "Formation", where he is shown to be the first member of Noah's five-man group. When the newly-converted Justin Law fails at his execution attempt of Maka, Gopher proposes that he go after her next - to which Noah agrees.

A short while later, we see Gopher physically assaulting Kid in order to discipline him for rearranging Noah's book. The chapter afterward, he initiates a battle with Maka and Soul, inevitably loses because she's the main character, and teleports back to Noah via a page from the Book of Eibon. He apologizes profusely in front of his master only to be rebuked and addressed as a ‘tool’ and ‘not to forget his place’. Mortified and resentful, Gopher ends up turning his anger on the captured Kid and ruthlessly beats him again.

The next time Gopher makes an appearance is when Noah presents him with a magical belt that supposedly amplifies the user's power by 10%. Gopher is overjoyed to have another chance to prove himself to Noah - except it malfunctions and blows up on him mid-attack. Gopher considers this a mistake on his part (although in reality, Noah foresaw this happening, and thus why he didn't test it on himself) and blames his failure on Maka. Not that Maka has anything to do with his failure, but Gopher has serious issues.

Anyway, Gopher starts making a daily hobby out of beating Kid. One day, Gopher gets so pissed off that the shinigami isn’t reacting to his
beatings that he makes a face so absurd that Kid notices his lips are asymmetrical and he cracks. Realizing emo cowboy goth Jesus is as crazy as he is, Gopher gleefully takes advantage of Kid’s OCD and begins to torment the right side of his body, but not the left. A torn shirt sleeve and an array of marker scribbles later, and Noah suddenly enters the scene. Not entirely pleased that one of his most precious collections has been doodled upon, Noah sucks OCD McGee back into the Book of Eibon and orders Gopher to prepare some tea as punishment.

The readers are left to assume that Gopher is just chilling in the church and doing nothing remotely useful as we only see two single-panel cameos of the boy over the next several chapters; once when Noah orders him to alert Giriko, and the other where he think-bubbles "Noah-sama" whilst staring ahead at nothing.

When the Shibukids in nappies face off with Noah, Gopher leaps in and tries to protect Noah from one of Death the Kid’s attacks. This, like everything else he has ever done, ends with failure. He gets knocked out of the scene with a single blow from Kid and doesn’t recover until, well, Noah is dead. Getting up from the bushes, he sees his master blown into tiny Noah-chunks and then sees his master’s precious book in flames. Gopher manages to grab the real Book of Eibon before Maka reaches it, swears his eternal vengeance while making funny faces at the protagonist, and jets off into the sky. And even though Soul can turn into a scythe with wings, Death the Kid has a magical flying skateboard, and Black Star can launch his wavelength up to a million feet—nobody feels the need to chase after Gopher who may or may not have Book of Eibon. And the BREW.

And so the arc ends.

Personality: To sum up Gopher's personality in one word: crazy. Once you think you've reached the bottom of his craziness, there's a crazy underground garage. He is positively obsessed with Noah to the point where it is not only unhealthy, but it defines his existence and basically makes up his entire character. His personality is primarily composed of negative emotions—disgust, jealousy, paranoia, resentment, anger, and sadism - which are all connected to Noah in one way or the other. The only time Gopher is truly seen smiling in happiness is when Noah-sama presents him with the heresy belt, which Gopher mistakenly believes was forged just for him.

Gopher is initially presented as this mysterious boy who was a loyal servant of Noah, dedicated yet capable of self-control, and spoke in a sophisticated manner. However, it only takes a few chapters before his reveals his true self—a massive, writhing pile of irrational envy, loathing, and fanboyism. He cracks halfway through his fight with Maka, revealing his jealousy in Noah's interest towards Maka and expressing his own desire to also be 'collected' by Noah. His jealousy spirals out of control as the fight continues, and he's spewing curses and insults by the end.

From there on afterward, Gopher demonstrates an almost bipolar personality—one minute he's a calmly collected, almost bored manservant with an air of apathy and distaste for those around him—the next, he's screaming like a crazed lunatic with his eyes bulging from his head. He's shown to be extremely aggressive and violent at times, and has a tendency to bite his upper lip when he's enraged, and the absurd triangle shape his mouth forms has been the butt of many jokes both in canon and the fandom. Needless to say, Gopher is a very easy person to upset if you know which button to press—the one that says "Noah" on it.

Obsession and paranoia go hand in hand, and Gopher's psychosis may well be on par with Death the Kid's obsessive-compulsive disorder and Black Star's delusions of grandeur. He views everybody as a rival for Noah's affection, as shown in his interactions with both Maka and Kid. In addition, he's extremely overprotective of Noah, absolutely taking any insult towards his master—no matter how small or large—as a personal affront. Gopher believes his undying loyalty to be a desirable trait (even when Noah rebukes him for it) and sees it as one of the many reasons why he is the absolute perfect servant for his master and why he "is the only one who can satisfy Noah-sama".

Following the trend in his comrades—Justin, who is a sexist, and Giriko, who practices his own brand of male chauvinism—Gopher is also a slight, slight misogynist. This could stem from the fact he probably views women as bigger rivals than men for Noah. Women-hating runs in the team, I suppose.

Although the readers are introduced to him as being "evil", Gopher hasn't exactly done anything "evil" even to the end of the arc… he’s just been… crazy.

Other: His abilities include…

Grigori Soul (http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090815145930/souleater/images/thumb/8/83/Gopher%27s_Soul.png/603px-Gopher%27s_Soul.png) - Gopher has a rare type of soul that is estimated to only appear in 1 out of every 50 million people. It has the unique ability to give both the owner and their soul's appearance a pair of angel wings. The only other known individual to possess the Grigori soul is the protagonist, Maka Albarn - who, using her soul perception, detected a significant amount of evil magic embedded in Gopher's soul.

Flight (http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090815153924/souleater/images/thumb/3/34/Gopher_in_Flight.jpg/611px-Gopher_in_Flight.jpg) - Because of his Grigori soul, Gopher is capable of sprouting wings from his left wrist that allows him to fly. He is extremely quick and agile in the skies to the point where it looks as if he's teleporting to the untrained eye. The wings can also be manipulated for defensive purposes, and seem to be a strong shield.

Bullet Feathers (http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090815154621/souleater/images/0/08/Gopher%27s_Feathers.jpg) - By flapping the wings on his wrist, Gopher is able to fire its feathers as bullet-like projectiles in rapid succession, much like a machine gun. There is a seemingly infinite amount of ammo to this attack with any feathers lost instantly being regenerated.

Stomach Cannon (http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20090815154133/souleater/images/thumb/5/5f/Gopher_Cannon.png/710px-Gopher_Cannon.png) - His signature attack, Gopher has this... unusual... skill where his stomach area opens up and shoots a massive ball of energy, all the while he is shouting "Noah-sammaaaaaaa~" at the top of his lungs. His eyes roll to the back of his head and he has almost an orgasmic expression on his face while executing the attack and I really think this just sums up everything who Gopher is in a nutshell. The cannon takes a short while to charge, but has enough power to blast through two small mountains. Gopher can also perform a 'homing' variation of this attack. By sacrificing speed, he channels his hatred and killing intent into the energy ball which allows it to accurately track his opponent's location.

Also, unlike his canonmates, Gopher will in fact be taken from the latest chapter of the manga. This means Giriko is dead, Death the Kid just killed Noah, and Justin has left for the clown party at Asura’s place. He will also be in possession of the real Book of Eibon as well as the BREW, but he’ll probably hand over the thing to Noah at DDD quicker than you can say worm moire grimoire.

On the very off-chance that I get accepted into DDD, the next several log posts will only be valid up to the point that he meets the Noah from another universe during his stay at DDD. Like I said in my app, Gopher is defined by his emotions for Noah so whether Noah exists or not in his life influences Gopher's mental health.

First Person (entry type):

I WILL NEVER FORGIVE THOSE BASTARDS.

H-HOW DARE THEY - HOW DARE THEY LAY A SINGLE... A SINGLE FINGER ON YOU, NOAH-SAMA -

They TARNISHED your perfection - the fucking nerve of those lowlifes. Grimy shit-eating maggots... how dare they have the audacity to take you away from me... their deaths are sealed - I will destroy them for destroying you!!

And HIM. That fucking pig of a priest - the coward left you for his fake shitty god. He betrayed you at the very last moment - he could have been there to protect you, but he left... the bastard LEFT. I told you, Noah-sama, I told you! Why didn't you listen to me?!

But it doesn't matter... I'll get him back too... I'll get all of them back...

I'll show those fucking morons... heh...

I'll make them repay my pain by tenfold... heheheh... heh... they can't deny my feelings for you, Noah-sama... they will feel my all-encompassing feelings for you and then they will understand...

WAIT FOR ME, MAGGOTS. I'LL RIP OUT YOUR ORGANS AND HAVE YOUR GUTS STRUNG ON A FENCE.

WAIT FOR MEEEEEEEEEE

First Person (entry type) number two AKA when Gopher can be normal and act civilly towards others that don't include Soul Eater cast members:

… I was once told that you should never let go of the person most important to you.

I let go of mine.

No.

Mine was ripped out of my very hands and slewn in front of my eyes. I swear on my life that I will find the bastards that destroyed the one important to me and make them pay dearly so help me god I WILL -

On a different note, if anybody happens to meet a boy with black hair… and three white stripes on the side… would you be so kind as to inform me of his whereabouts? I would like to speak to him in regards of his current housing situation.

... Thank you.

Third Person:

And once he was far, far away from the shinigami bastard and that festering cunt of a girl and the rest of the unforgivable worms—the raw emotion of abandonment finally sunk in.

He was now alone.

Noah-sama had left him.

He felt the feeling transform him from a semi-cognizant being into this massive blob of pure, raw negativity stuffed into a humanoid shell and scotch-taped together lest he fell apart into steaming chunks of Gopher-meat. He fought down the urge to scream and ravage his surroundings and blow up every living thing in his line of vision because that would be unsightly and he knew Noah-sama appreciated restraint. But how could he be calm? What the fuck was calmness? His master was destroyed – gone -- now what was he supposed to do???

...

Of course.

...

It was then Gopher threw restraint to the wind and cracked into full-fledged laughter, howling like a mental patient in an insane asylum, his world aglow in delusional euphoria and the sound of his own insane giggling.

There was only one thing to do, after all. He had the Book of Eibon. He had the Brew.

He just had to kill them. Kill them all.
