Character: Cordelia Chase Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel the Series Character Notes: History: Cordelia was the queen bee of Sunnydale High. She ruled the school with a razorsharp wit and designer shoes. And then there was this new girl, Buffy, and with Buffy came a lot of weird stuff at the school. At first, Cordelia shakes it off and tries to ignore it but as it continues, she realizes there are vampires, demons, and things that go bump in the night in Sunnydale. So she decides to help Buffy, if only to keep herself safe at first.
As she worked with the group, she eventually started fooling around with Xander Harris. They snuck around a lot at first because they were both ashamed of their relationship, but eventually she gets tired of always coming second to Buffy and Willow. She wants more. So then she and Xander come out about their relationship. Cordelia’s friends all begin to shun her, and she breaks up with him, thinking her social standing was more important. But she realizes it wasn’t. So she takes back control and starts dating Xander again, making the other girls just deal with it.
As time goes on, she develops real feelings for Xander. She decorates her locker with pictures of him and seems to really soften as a person. Until she catches him kissing another girl. And not just anyone, but Willow. She breaks up with him after that and begins to ice out the Scoobies. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, but Cordelia’s attempts to become Queen C of the school again don’t work. Her friends ridicule her for being cheated on by Xander of all people. Though she still helps out Buffy and the gang, she feels isolated because it feels like everyone else has taken Xander’s side. It’s during this time that she grows attracted to Wesley Wyndam Price, Faith’s Watcher.
During this time, Cordelia is accepted to several top schools, but what comes out later is that she can’t go to any of them. Why? Her family went completely bankrupt because her father had cheated on his taxes. She can’t even afford the prom dress she wanted. She went from the girl who had everything to the girl who had nothing, and it’s hard for her to deal with. Xander finds out about it and buys her the prom dress, which mends their friendship. She eventually finally kisses Wesley, but even though she was attracted to him, their attempts to do anything were awkward at best.
After high school she moves to L.A. to become an actress. It’s there where she meets up with Angel and decides she’s going to work for him, to make his business a profitable one. Though she rejects Doyle’s interest in her at first because he seems beneath her, as they get to know one another she grows feelings for him, and respect. Right before he dies he reveals he was a demon and kisses her, passing on his visions to her. Though she’s originally angry at him for passing on this gift that causes her pain, she grows to appreciate it.
The really turning point for Cordelia however, is at the end of season one, when all of the suffering of Los Angeles is released into her head thanks to the Vocah demon. She nearly goes insane from it. But once Wesley releases her from the visions, she's brought back to her regular self, but she sees things more clearly.
She sees that there are a lot of people out there who needs to be helped, and for the first time becomes really involved in the mission. Before that, it was something she just kind of did while trying to get her acting career going, but now it was something she was personally invested in. Not only that, but Wesley and Angel had become like her family, closer than she had ever been to anyone before. This was when she really starts to try to be a better person, but the "old" Cordelia still tends to come out from time to time.
Luckily for her, her friends seem to like them both.
Personality: Cordelia Chase is above everything else confident. She thinks very highly of herself, she always has and she always will. She may doubt things in life, but one thing she won't doubt is her worth. The few times she has have been very hard on her, and often results in cold grudges (like when Xander cheated on her with Willow, and then acted like he did nothing wrong, this may be the prime example of her behavior when her sense of self has been shattered.)
When she was younger she was a very typical high school queen. She was self-absorbed and only cared about herself. But as time went on and she became more aware of what was really going on in Sunnydale, she also became more willing, though still very reluctant to help. Her relationship with Xander Harris, and how it falls apart ends up humbling greatly, as does her family losing everything. She no longer has the world at her fingertips, but she finds a way to come above it, and doesn't let it knock her down. But it does help her to not look down on other people like the way she always used to. She's still pretty judgmental at this point, but she's definitely her stepping in the right direction.
Her relationship with Xander and the fact that he cheats on her (and with Willow, someone she sees as beneath her) is important because despite herself, she had really fallen for Xander. And she's used to getting whatever she wants, and it becomes very clear by his callous behavior after they break up that he never cared about her the way she did about him. She's not used to rejection.
But the really turning point in Cordy's personality is when she comes to live in Los Angeles. She helps Angel turn his work into a business, and befriends both him and a demon named Doyle. She dislikes Doyle at first, dismissing him and thinking he's a loser, but as she gets closer to him, she realizes there's a lot more to him. She begins to consider a relationship with him despite the fact that he's part demon. This is particularly important because before this she had been very prejudice against all demons, considering them to be evil and nothing else. Her friendship and almost romance with Doyle helps expand her world view, much like her relationship with Xander did, but on a much larger scale.
When Doyle dies and passes his visions onto her, she's frightened and scared at first. They're painful, and she doesn't want the responsibility that comes along with them. But she soon realizes just how many people in the world are suffering, and she becomes determined to help them. Despite the fact that the visions hurt her, she refuses to give them up, though she gets several opportunities to do so. She knows that they make her who she is, a hero. And even when she knew they might kill her, she knew if she accepted Skip's offer to live in a world where she never got them, her friends, and specifically Angel, would suffer greatly, and she couldn't do that for them. So instead, she insisted on being turned into a half demon, despite having previously been judgmental against demons, so she could help her friends and not die.
Another big aspect of Cordelia's personality is that she says what she's thinking more often than not. Being tactful is not a skill she uses often. She doesn't believe in beating around the bush or sugar coating things. She says what she means and she means what she says. Even you're a friend or loved one, she's not afraid of telling you you're wrong. She's honest to a fault.
The closest she gets to really lying are lies of omission. If something's wrong with her (like when her visions were slowly killing her), she's likely to just keep it to herself and not tell her friends about it. Part of this comes from the belief that she can overcome things without help, part of this also comes from the fact that she doesn't want to cause her friends worries.
Despite the fact that Cordelia develops and becomes a true Champion of good, she never loses her femininity. She still get excited about new clothes, the chance to dress up, and the idea of a whirlwind romance (like she has with Groo). She becomes a strong balance between hero and woman, and wears both roles like a glove. Despite becoming a much deeper person throughout the two series, some of her old shallowness still shines through, like getting super excited over presents for her birthday, or new clothes being a means to mending her friendship with Angel.
She also develops very motherly instincts later on in the series. We see it with Connor, Angel's son, but we also see it with her relationship with Fred. She puts a lot of effort into helping the other girl assimilate back into the real world. This probably is due to her own time in Pylea helping her to empathize with Fred's situation. One of Cordelia’s biggest fears and insecurities is the fact that she has them at all. She’s done a very good job all her life to appear to be tough as nails, like nothing gets to her. In reality, this isn’t true at all. She doesn’t care what nameless others think of her, but what her friends think of her? That’s vitally important to her. This is why, in the episode Birthday she is so hurt when she hears Angel talking about her being too weak to handle things. Because she likes to think that her friends think better of her, that’s she’s become more than the cheerleader who would scream and run away from monsters back in Sunnydale. It bothers her so much that she overcompensates and accepts Skip’s offer just to prove to herself that she didn’t need them. But I think part of her also thought they didn’t need her, which is why the events of that episode are so important to her.
Another big insecurity of hers is being second best. A lot of this stems from her relationship with Xander, which is still probably the only long term, real relationship she’s had. And even though she really had strong feelings for him, she always felt like he cared about Buffy and Willow more. This was reinforced by the fact that she found him cheating on her with not just anyone, but Willow of all people. Willow was someone she used to tease and make fun of, then here this guy she really cared about, who she had once seen as beneath her, cheating on her with the object of her teasing. Though she never talks about Xander or that relationship once she moves over to the series Angel I think it left a rather large scar in her psyche, even if she doesn’t want to admit it. As she develops feelings for Angel throughout the series, I always felt like that same insecurity built up inside about Buffy. Even if he ever returned her feelings, he’d always love Buffy more and Buffy always come first.
Cordelia also wonders sometimes if the things that have happened to her since she’s been in L.A. are punishment for what a bitch she was in Sunnydale. This is best examined in the episode “Room With A View” where she feels like being tortured by a ghost is her punishment, that she deserves it. Although by the end of the episode, she accepts that being a bitch is part of who she is, I think it really shined some light on deeper insecurities of hers. Even when she doesn’t show it, she does have regret over the things she’s done in the past, the person she’s been in the past. This is also revisited in "That Vision Thing" in season three when she thinks she is being punished for the type of person she's been.
Also, Cordelia is the type of person who keeps everything from people around her. She refuses to ask for help, almost to a fault. This is shown first in the third season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer when she doesn’t tell anyone else about her family losing money. Xander only finds out because he discovers her working to save up for her prom dress. She doesn’t want anyone’s pity, and refuses to give them the chance to help. She’d rather just handle it herself. This is also seen in the third season of Angel when she goes unconscious due to one of her visions. What Angel and the others discover is that she’s been taking heavy duty painkillers for her pain. Not only that, but she had seen doctors, had CAT scans, and found out she was dying from the visions but still didn’t tell anyone about it. The way she saw it, it was her burden to carry and not anybody else’s.
Other: Cordelia gets visions from ~The Powers That Be~ that show her people they're supposed to help. These visions also come with a side of terrible pain. And sometimes she even drools on herself D: Also..tact is something Cordelia generally doesn't believe in. First Person (entry type): Okay Wesley, what kind of weird websites have you been surfing on the work computers. I assume it was you, because if Angel was trying to use it, it would be on fire right about now. You'd think he would have kept up on technology as it develops but no! He's as clueless as some inept child. Right. So we were discussing..why you were visiting this site in general. I mean, drama? Ducks? Seriously? Is this what you do in your spare time? You really need a hobby.
I'm sure you have some research for our cases you could be doing or something. Anything less lame than this.
Third Person: Cordelia cried out in pain, falling down on the floor of her apartment as images ran through her head, one after another. They were clips, like a poorly edited movie trailer or something. She was getting used to it by now, visions with a side of searing pain.
As the images began to subside and she was able to regain control over her body, she peeled herself off the floor. "Phone!" She called out to her roommate, Dennis, who floated the phone over to her. But as she was about to dial, it was time for a rerun, the vision passing through her slower this time, with more details involved. It was a young girl in a crappy part of L.A., near Olivera St. She was being attacked by a group of vampires. They didn't have a lot of time.
She could feel the girl's fear, her helplessness and it made Cordelia's resolve harden. Ever since that time with the Vocah demon that unleased all of Los Angeles' suffering to her, empathy had become a deep part of her visions. She didn't just see it happening to the victims, she pratically experienced it herself. It was totally freaky, but good motivation to make sure they all got on the job as quickly as possible.
She then started to dial again, rolling her eyes as it went to voice mail. She didn't know what Angel and Wesley were up to, but clearly it couldn't be important because she hadn't been able to tell them about the latest job yet.
"Look guys, you need to get on this as soon as you get this message. There's a girl being attacked by a group of vampires down near Olivera Street. I'm trying Gunn next, but you better meet us there. We'll definitely need as many people on this one as possible. Also, does no one answer this line when I'm not around? Seriously?"
She hung up the phone and handed it back to her ghostly roommate. She grabbed her jacket out of her closet and made her way out. She'd have to take care of things herself, and wait for the boys to meet up with her.
