Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, and Aragorn then arrived at Edoras, where Saruman's hold over Théoden was exposed and removed by Gandalf. For his treachery Grima was to be killed by none other than the King, but Aragorn intervened. Grima then left Rohan only to return to the side of his Master Saruman.

After Théodred's burial, two children who were survivors from an Orc attack at a village arrived at Edoras, and from there the King realized that the enemies were getting closer, more brutal with their advances against Rohan. Théoden decided to move his people to Helm's Deep rather than meet these attacks head on, contrary to the advise given to him by Gandalf and Aragorn. It was Théoden's belief that his army could protect the people better with Helm's Deep's impenetrable walls and strong defenses. Gandalf, not pleased with the King's decision, decided to head towards where Éomer and his men were in order to bring them back to Rohan to fight for it.

It was while preparing for their departure that Éowyn first talked to Aragorn, who was able to tame Théodred's horse with an Elf's language. Another encounter had Aragorn learning that Éowyn was skilled in using a sword, and that she feared a cage, "to stay behind bars until use and old age accept them, and all chance of valor is gone beyond recall or desire." Aragorn assured her that that would not be her fate, perhaps marking the beginning of her having strong feelings for him.

During the journey, the people of Rohan were assaulted by Orcs. Despite her desire to fight, Théoden urged her to lead the women and children to Helm's Deep, while he and the others stay to slay the enemy. Éowyn successfully brought the people to safety. Later, she found out from Gimli that Aragorn had fallen during the battle. Her expression betrayed her sadness over the event - and her joy, too, when he returned to them very much alive.

That night, the battle at Helm's Deep occurred, with Éowyn safely hidden against her wishes. Despite Grima's revelation of where Helm's Deep's weakness lay and the Orcs' subsequent exploitation of it, Théoden and the others were able to defend his people, more so when Gandalf returned along with Éomer and his men. Afterward, they were all able to safely return to Edoras.

During the celebration of their victory, Théoden noticed his niece's feelings towards Aragorn, and expressed his approval. However, peace did not settle long. Soon, Gondor was threatened by attacks from Sauron's army and called for Rohan's help. Despite Théoden's earlier assertion that Gondor did not come to assist them in their time of need, in the end he chose to answer the call. In the end, he rallied his remaining men and even sent Gamling and Éomer to gather more soldiers, all for Gondor's benefit.

Éowyn rode with the men to the encampment, claiming that she was doing it because it was tradition, but in truth she was planning something else. Aragorn was able to see through her ruse, but did not say anything. As Merry had earlier offered his services to Théoden and was named an esquire of Rohan, Éowyn was later seen fixing his armor and urging him to have his sword sharpened. Éomer did not take Merry seriously, leading Éowyn to question him as to why the hobbit couldn't fight for those he loved, when he had as much to fight for as Éomer - while seemingly not talking about Merry entirely. Her brother was able to pick up on this, and warned her that war was no place for a woman.

Later that night, Éowyn caught Aragorn as he was about to leave for the mountains. She tried to make him stay, and when he asked why she came with them Éowyn all but admitted to her feelings for him - and Aragorn, as gently as he could, told her that he would not be able to give her what she wanted from him. This, perhaps, cemented what had only been a vague idea before.

The next day, the Rohirrim left the encampment and moved toward Gondor - with Éowyn, disguised as a man, along with them. Only Merry knew about it.

In battle, Éowyn and Merry fought together - until they got separated, and Éowyn saw that her wounded Uncle was about to be killed by the Witch-King of Angmar. Bravely, she slew the fell beast it rode on by cutting off its head. The Witch-King retaliated by attacking Éowyn until he had hit her shield, breaking it as well as her arm. Just as he was about to kill her, Merry managed to stab him, which gave Éowyn enough time to kill him, thereby fulfilling the prophecy that the Witch-King's end would not come from the hands of a man.

Éowyn returned to the fallen Théoden, and was able to see him perish and grieve for him before succumbing to her own grave injuries. After the battle had been won, Éomer was able to spot her in the fields and thought her dead - only for Aragorn to heal her. She was then left at the Houses of Healing to fully recuperate.

It was here that she met Faramir, Captain of Gondor, and soon the two fell in love. Before they left the Houses of Healing, Faramir asked her to marry him, and she accepted. Later, they were seen together at Aragorn's coronation as King of Gondor. Faramir was named Prince of Ithilien and one of Aragorn's chief commanders, and his line the Stewards of Gondor. Éowyn, his wife, was to be called the Lady of Ithilien.

Personality: Proud, brave and willful, Éowyn was the epitome of a true Rohirrim. She and her brother share many characteristics with the soldiers born in Rohan, but as Éowyn was born a woman, she could not "properly" and freely express them, and longed to obtain honor the way Éomer could. The siblings weren't shown to be explicitly close, which might be due to them not spending a lot of time together - Éomer was the third Marshal of Riddermark, whereas Éowyn was forced to stay home and look after their aging uncle. They still shared a great bond, with Éomer trying his best to look after her - first by showing great insight into her thoughts and consequently warning her about the horrors of war on the eve of battle, and next by watching over her when she was struck down by the Witch King.

Grima called her 'cold', but this was because she despised him, and was therefore unable to bestow him any affection or warmth the way she did to those she considered her friends. She could be caring and encouraging especially to Merry, with whom she was able to see herself in, for a Hobbit was not treated as an equal to men despite his desire to help. She loved Théoden like a father, and cared for him especially when he was under Saruman's influence. She also followed his orders despite them being against her wishes. She could also be described as lonely. Outside of her brother, her cousin, and her uncle, Éowyn was bereft of a confidante in Rohan. With Éomer banished, Théodred dead, and Théoden possessed, it was easy for her to give in to sorrow and loneliness. And it was because of this loneliness that it became easy for her to fall in love with Aragorn, the only man who was willing to listen to her and make her feel empowered.

She was also idealistic and foolhardy especially when it came to battle. Her brother had called her out on this, saying that she knew as much of war as Merry - which wasn't saying a lot. Éowyn always asserted that she knew how to fight, but without experience this wasn't a guarantee that she would survive if she were to be caught in one. Of course, it would be impossible for her to experience fighting in wars when her Uncle and brother always hindered her from participating, something she decided to go against by donning a man's armor and disguising herself. In this, she could be considered clever and cunning. But in war she was able to prove her worth as a warrior capable of defending herself with a shield and killing enemies left and right. Her bravery even led her to victory against the Witch King itself, which was no easy feat, considering how ridiculously powerful this enemy was.

First Person (entry type): I had sought death and glory in battle. I had watched my beloved King and Uncle perish before my eyes, and longed for the moment when I too, will no longer linger in this world and join him. I had destroyed that which no living man could ever hope to destroy - what more could they ask of anyone, more so a woman? Surely renown will be mine, now. I should have perished with honor.

And yet I still breathed. Lord Aragorn had saved me, pulled me back from the clutches of death. Did he truly not know what I wanted? Perhaps not. And yet I could not find it in my heart to loathe him.

How could I?

The day grows dim and my eyes, tired. Curse this weakness! Curse these wounds! For now I shall sleep and regain my strength, and tomorrow I shall demand for the warden to let me go. I have been idle for too long.

Third Person:

The beacons are lit! said Lord Aragorn. Gondor calls for aid!

And Rohan would answer, Théoden King had said.

Truly, in that moment Éowyn had never been prouder of her Uncle, and her people. Here they were, barely recovered from the assault of the enemy - and now this! Death called them once more, its threat alive and pulsing, and yet fear it not they did.

And in the midst of all the activities of men preparing for a hard journey and a cruel battle, she had made her decision. The last battle had seen her hidden and waiting. This she would not allow to happen again.

"My brother asks for a second set of armor," she said to the one in charge of the battle suits. He was but a child, several winters younger than her. Surely she would have no trouble here. "I am to deliver it to him."

He looked startled, and for a second did not seem to know what to do, what to make of her request. Éowyn lifted her chin and glared. "Quickly, lad. Do you desire to be the cause of his delay?"

And soon, the second set of armor was handed to her. "It's not much, my lady. I fear I only have the ones made for soldiers, not--"

"This would do," she replied, testing the suit's weight in her arms and finding it acceptable. "Yes. This would certainly do." Éowyn nodded and turned, ready to leave the armory, when she felt eyes on her and she looked to find Gamling staring at her with a grim expression on his face.

"My lady," he said with a slight bow. His lips thinned, but he kept them shut.

At once she knew what he was thinking. "Have you something to say?" she dared him.

He stepped closer, his eyes still on the suit. "Surely Lord Éomer would require something stronger, more worthy of him. If he is looking for one, that is, aside from that which he already wears." The doubt in his tone spoke volumes, but Éowyn would not falter. She refused to.

"No," she said, already moving towards the door. "There is no need for that. He will wear this with pride, and honor, like all the other riders of Rohan will. There is no shame in a soldier's simple suit."

"But, my lady--"

Éowyn paused, and turned. If Gamling were to tell her brother or her King, then this would be over. Perhaps she wouldn't even be allowed to ride with them to the encampment. No! Banish the thought.

"Speak of this to no one," she said. An absolute order from the niece of Théoden King.
