Character Notes:
History: Ten years ago, the stars disappeared. In their place, “fake” stars appeared, and with them came the contractors. Gifted with supernatural abilities checked only by the price they must pay for their contract, the contractors are mysterious beings governed only by rationality. Along with the contractors and the new stars, two gates appeared: “Heaven’s Gate” in South America, and “Hell’s Gate” in Japan. The contractors, endlessly rational and logical and incapable of feeling guilt, began to be used by human governments and other agencies as weapons. They were cold, ruthless assassins and Hei’s sister Pai was one of them. When fighting erupted around Heaven’s Gate, Pai was enlisted by the Syndicate to work on the front lines, and Hei joined with her, though he hated the killing. Still, he did it, and he became as ruthless as the contractors themselves, and just as feared.

Then Heaven’s Gate disappeared, along with Pai and everyone else Hei ever worked with or fought against. Hei never really knew what happened, but he knew that Amber, a Syndicate contractor he worked with extensively in South America, knew what happened. She had betrayed them, it was her fault that Pai was gone, and if Hei ever met Amber again he would get his answers and she would pay for what she did.

Five years later, Hei is now BK-201, the Black Reaper, a feared contractor with the ability to create and manipulate electrical currents, and an assassin working with the mysterious Syndicate. His unit, comprising of fellow contractor Mao, human Huang, and doll Yin, do their work based out of Tokyo, the front line to Hell’s Gate. While living in Tokyo, Hei masquerades as Chinese student Lee Shenshun, a good-natured young man who seems to get work in the most interesting places…

Personality: Hei, as a contractor, lacks emotional depth, is incapable of feeling remorse, and is completely rational in everything he does.

At lest, that’s how it should be. That’s how all the other contractors act, so Hei ought to be no different. But we learn very quickly that Hei is a very unusual contractor. He has no price to pay, when all other contractors do, he frequently is overcome with emotion (especially when any mention of his sister or Amber is made), and he is more often than not extremely irrational in his actions. When any other contractor would withdraw, surrender, or kill an innocent because they were ordered to, Hei will act more as a human would, dictated by his own emotions and irrational choices. There are several instances when Hei is cornered, and any other contractor in his position would have surrendered. He does not, and instead fights his way out and escapes, much to the confusion of other contractors encountering him.

There are also two separate cases of Hei helping people to escape despite Syndicate orders. In one, he helps a young man and the Doll he has fallen in love with escape the gang that the boy was involved with. Any other contractor would have either turned the boy in or stepped out of the situation entirely, but Hei helped because he understood what the boy was going through. Despite the Doll’s seeming lack of emotion and personality, the boy was devoted to her so much that he was willing to die for her. This struck a chord with Hei, who had joined the Syndicate despite his lack of contractor abilities so he could fight alongside his sister and protect her.

Personality continued: Another example of this is when Hei is ordered to make sure that his associate, Huang, kills the contractor who had failed in her Syndicate mission. Huang had fallen in love with this particular contractor a long time ago, and he refuses to kill her. Despite his orders to kill them both, Hei attempts to help them escape together, even though in the end the contractor dies anyway and the team is forced to return to work as normal.

Still, Hei doesn’t act completely normally for a human either. He is cold, distant, and a ruthless killer. Just because he doesn’t always follow all his orders to the letter and kill everyone he has to kill doesn’t mean he won’t still kill a threat when it presents itself.

Hei is, to put it mildly, a contradiction in terms. He is a human who is a contractor, a contractor who is a human. He is rationally irrational, emotionally unemotional.

Lee, the man he pretends to be in public, is pretty much an adorable derp, full of unexpected wisdom and insights, but prone to nervousness and social awkwardness. He is kind, selfless, and generous, but all of this is an act. Lee only exists as a method for Hei to hide his true purpose and intentions, but his act is so flawless and he is so talented at deception that he is never actually discovered.

Other: I’ll be taking Hei from between episodes two and three, with the intention of doing canon moves periodically. For the most part, his intentional posts to the community will be as Lee, but there will also be frequent appearances from Hei as the Black Reaper, probably in the midst of missions and such.

First Person (entry type): [As Lee:] Forgive me if I’m being too nosy, but what do you think when you look at the stars? To be honest I try not to think about it too much, because it’s been so long since the real stars have been in the sky that it’s almost depressing. Some people don’t notice the difference, but I do. I look at them every night and wonder if we’ll ever get to see the old stars again. I used to love looking at the stars. They were like the picture of imagination. When you looked at them you knew anything was possible.

The new stars look like stars, but you can tell something’s wrong with them. They’re not the real stars, and that hope… it’s all gone.

Ah, I’m probably making you all sad now. I’m sorry, that wasn’t my intention. I shouldn’t have bothered you all with this.

Third Person: As the glow of his synchrotron radiation subsided, The Black Reaper stood and observed the carnage from behind his mask. Three dead guards in the hallway—they had been simple enough to take care of. The guards in this room had been more heavily armed, but that only meant it took a little bit longer. The safe was right in front of him now, and Hei regarded it with a professional eye. It was an electronic safe, which wasn’t a problem for someone of Hei’s abilities. A hand on the door, a glow of blue light, and the crackle of electricity were all that was required for the lock to short out, enabling Hei to swing the door of the safe open easily.

“I’m in,” he spoke quietly into the radio.

Inside the large room of the safe were three young girls, simply dressed, faces devoid of any emotion or even any reaction to the presence of a strange man in a mask. This wasn’t what he had expected. “Dolls,” he breathed softly.

Apparently it wasn’t what his team was expecting, either. Through the various confused remarks that followed, Hei caught another sound: footsteps behind him. Turning to face the newcomer, Hei put his hands on his knives, at the ready. The newcomer was a woman, a serene smile on her face as she said, “you must be the Black Reaper. I’ve been looking forward to this.”
