Character: Destruction

Character Notes: You know those spoilers? They start here. There are lots of them.

History: Most families have their problems. When said family consists of the Endless, those problems tend to be a bit grander in scale. Destruction is one of them, a repeating motif. Of course, even when he was created, even when there weren’t any people to call Earth Earth, he liked to be there. Destruction was different than his nature implied. In his own little way, he got along with all of them, from Destiny on down to Delight. And when Delight became Delirium, he still liked her best. In fact, to date he is the first and only person to kiss his younger sister, Despair.

And when humanity shows up, Destruction keeps right on changing things. In fact, he’s the one who sends Orpheus to see Death, which starts an extremely large chain of events that leads to the Kindly Ones. His name may be Destruction, but he’s more of an agent of change. Old ideas need to be destroyed for the new ones to be created. Nobody ever said change had to be nice. But things change, all the same, as he spends time on Earth. He thinks about who he is. He thinks about what he does.

The Age of Reason changes everything. Not only for the people, but for Destruction. It is hypothesized that light can transform into matter, and vice versa. Destruction seemed to know where this hypothesis would eventually lead. He called it “The Age of fire and flame”. It’s heavily implied to be the atomic bomb. Destruction refused to be responsible for it, or to direct the flow of humanity anymore.

So rebuked his duties, told his family not to follow him, and left the Endless behind, claiming that there’s no such thing as a one sided coin. Where he went after that, only he knew. He spent a lot of time thinking. He always did. He spent a lot of time with humanity. He always did. He tried his hands at creation, at every kind of art he could think of, to very mixed success. He stuck to anonymity, digging out canals and painting chalk on sidewalks in London. Along the way, he found a talking dog named Barnabas, and tried to ignore his new art critic ever after.

300 years later, Delirium and Dream find him. Mostly Delirium. And there were traps set in place, because no one can look for destruction and come out unscathed. It’s because of these traps that Dream had to talk to Orpheus again. It’s because of this meeting that Delirium received Barnabas to look over her. It’s because of this meeting that Destruction explained why he left, and why he wasn’t coming back. It’s because of that meeting with Orpheus that Dream finally mercy kills him, and thus enables the Kindly Ones to take revenge. It’s because of this meeting that everything changes.

Destruction did not attend Dream’s funeral. He gave advice to the new Dream and took his leave. He said he might come around again. Things change, after all.

Personality: For a being who used to be in charge of change, Destruction is a very solid character. He’s kinder than most of his family by far, and to date is the only being to ever kiss Despair. He’s introspective, and this learned understanding makes him wise. He has a very pronounced sense of responsibility, and an admiration for humanity. More specifically, he likes progress. He likes change. Combine all of those things, the kindness, the introspection, the progress, and the responsibility, and it’s no wonder why he abandoned his realm.

He’s especially given to pondering, and pondering his nature at that. He often wonders about all the lives he’s touched, the people he’s met, the destinies he’s shaped, and has a degree of respect for humanity that, again, most of the other Endless don’t quite approach. In an effort to subvert and control his own nature, he’s been trying creation for quite some time now. He tends to take anonymous roles as opposed to being the source of things. And no, years of practice doesn’t mean he’s gotten particularly better at making things. He laughs off criticism, but he doesn’t let it stop him from leaving half finished sculptures lying around.

Destruction’s very eager to give out advice, not only to the new Dream but also almost anyone who seeks it. People often have trouble accepting change, after all, and the same goes for the Endless. Some changes even catch Destruction off guard. Leaving the family created a rift that, by and large, most of them are unable to fully deal with. In particular, Destruction’s close to Delirium, and often tries to protect her from further harm. Instead of changing himself, he tends to prompt other characters to change and develop. Even though destruction isn’t properly his fault anymore, he’s still its active outlet.

Because of this, he’s keenly aware that sooner or later, everything is destroyed and replaced by something new. Sooner or later, everything ends. He has a fondness for stars, because they give the illusion that things last forever.

Other: Destruction likes to work anonymously and keep a low profile. Thus, I suspect he’d be *Very likely* to use a fake name when dealing with so many normal people.

He’s being taken from after Endless Nights. His tale takes place after Delirium’s, which takes place after the events of the Sandman because Daniel-Dream is there. He appears with Delirium. He claims “the family” sent him to look out for her after her psychotic break. Therefore, I’m assuming he’s in *some* kind of contact with both Delirium and Dream. I’m leaving relations undetermined for everyone else in the family. At the very least, he has not and most likely will not take up his abandoned post, even if relations improve.

Destruction unconsciously warps reality to be more, well, destructive around him. When people come looking for him in his old capacity, traps activate to make it extraordinarily difficult. He can’t stop the defense without being forced to resume his duties. He also has a habit for wandering and not appearing in the same place twice. Therefore, worldhopping to him would be *extremely* difficult, if not impossible. You can’t go looking for Destruction and come out unscathed.

First Person (entry type):

Ladies, Gentlemen, and associated others, I hereby present a haiku I have written. Everyone’s so critical these days, but hopefully this poem will be met with much less. Honestly, how was I supposed to know nothing rhymes with orange? As I was saying, please take a look at my poem, if you’d like.

A Haiku
Falling asleep with
Out dreaming of things to come
Or things we forgot.

There! Well, what did you think? I think that’s the right amount of syllables.

Oh, and is there a word that rhymes with purple? For future reference.

Now that I think of it, maybe colors are the wrong way to go.

b>Third Person:

There was news out of North Carolina, which spread like wildfire across the world via newsprint but more commonly via conversations in bars. There were two brothers who made bicycles, but now they made something fly. Actually, honestly fly. Without flapping wings or crashing into rocks below. Destruction wasn’t there. He hadn’t seen it himself. Underneath the chalk outlines on the street, he could tell as if he’d been there himself. Something had shifted. There was something new. For every one person who proclaimed it was bullshit, there were two who read the news entranced. Flight. Could you believe it? If man were meant to fly, he would have wings.

They’d said the same, when steam first billowed out of engines. Put steam onto a ship when there were perfectly good sails? What nonsense. Now, of course, smoke plumed out of ships like dark fog in London. For every new idea, for every invention, for every new unshakable discovery, there were a million old ideas that had to be destroyed. Even though he didn’t control it anymore, he felt it, all the same. A shifting beneath the ground, like an earthquake. The impossible proved possible. An idea slowly catching on, spreading like the news today. Something old being destroyed. Something new being created.

Right now, the plane was made of canvas and gears and wood. One day, it would be made of metal. One day, it would lift more than a single person. One day, it would lift more than just people. Out of the bellies of the planes, destruction would flow like water. Fires burning people, armies, cities, countries. Give humanity an idea and it would always end in flames. It would always end with destruction.

For now, there was a plane in North Carolina and flight made possible. Destruction drew on pavement while the world changed around him. For all the world, he couldn’t be happier about it.
