Character: Ichiko Yagura Fandom: Siren Character Notes: History:Countless years ago, when the world had yet to see the first dawn, there were many creatures that roamed the world in the darkness. Then God created light, and there were many who could not stand it and fled from it. Two among these creatures were monstrosities known as the Otoshigo and Mother. While Mother became sealed beneath the earth, Otoshigo was trapped beneath the sea. As a result, the area where it was trapped became known as a cursed area where ships and people would disappear, and where those that drowned in the sea would become possessed by a monster. The truth was that those that disappeared were pulled into a dimension that merged several points in time. Outside of the world, those that had disappeared were trapped under the will of those who now desired to return to Earth and blanket it in darkness.
Enter Ichiko Yagura.
A young girl who was travelling back from a victory at a tennis tournament, Ichiko had plenty of ordinary worries and joys on her mind. Soon she would be home, to her mother and to her friends, she believed. Unfortunately, it was not to be. After the body of a young woman was pulled up on board, rumors began to spread that the ship was cursed. They were right. The Otoshigo drew them into the other dimension and attacked. Only one girl escaped.
Ichiko awoke to chaos, her memory of the last few hours blank. Otoshigo had killed everyone on board and they had been possessed by its shiryos, evil spirits that were said to enter the bodies of anyone that died in the cursed area if they were not cleansed by Mekkojou branches. Through her own courage, she first discovered the dead woman - now alive, to her horror - and then a policeman named Shigeru Fujita, who helped her escape. Together, they found a place to hole up before proceeding onwards, and were confronted by an inhabitant of the island who had long disappeared. Tsuneo Ohta died before their eyes and revived as a shibito, one of Otoshigo's creatures. It pursued them to the underground storage areas and there it attacked - only to flee suddenly as Ichiko felt her lips smile of their own accord. While Shigeru wondered, the truth that had driven the shibito away came to light. The Otoshigo took her over, killing Shigeru with a knife. As the cry of Mother echoed to announce its release, Otoshigo disappeared once more to leave Ichiko covered in blood and horrified by her actions.
Catatonic with shock, she wandered blindly for several hours until a fall reminded her. She had fallen from the boat before her awakening upon it. Ichiko Yagura was dead. How then was she still alive? As her memories returned, the Otoshigo spoke through her, to her horror. She forced it aside in order to proceed, realising that the shibito of before had changed. They had been taken over by Mother and became yamibito under her command. Through her own ingenuity and the arrival of the dawn, she escaped, but that was not to last. Soon enough, the yamibito began to grow shrouds that covered the land and blocked out the light. The yamibito pursued her.
A soldier named Takeaki Misawa came to her rescue but soon realised the truth; that the bloodstained girl was not human any more. When he turned on her, he was shot by his subordinate, Yorito Nagai. While Yorito himself decided to protect her, an evolved Yamibito attacked and kidnapped her. He pursued.
Unfortunately, he found her surrounded by the dead. Otoshigo had taken her over and it hunted Yorito sadistically, turning it into a game. He was able to draw Ichiko out for just a moment with the bracelet of her friend Noriko, but she realised the danger to him and chose to flee rather than to allow him to die too.
The Yamibito erected a huge pylon that arched into the sky and gave access to the outside world. While Mamoru Itsuki headed up to the top in order to stop Mother from entering it, Otoshigo followed. Thanks to the yamibito's powers and her own new freedom, Mother now had the ability to turn the outside world into one of darkness once more. Otoshigo too was aimed towards that goal, but its rage at Mother was far more distracting. It was distracted by the many yamibito and by the two humans that were trying to stop Mother, and was unable to reach the top before Mother reached Otoshigo. When it was knocked out by Mother, it retreated, and Ichiko awoke just in time for the Pylon to collapse. She fell. Soon after, Mother was destroyed, freeing Otoshigo from his prison
Yorito Nagai, the last ally she had had, was the witness to her last moments as Otoshigo abandoned her body for its own. Without the Otoshigo, death returned to claim her and she lay lifeless, half-mutated on the ground. The Otoshigo attacked Yorito and was killed at last, for in its true form, its weakness was fire. Without either of the ancients to sustain it, the dimension collapsed and scattered the few survivors across other dimensions. And so the leaders of the ancient creatures of darkness were destroyed. Personality: Since there are two people in one body, I'll write each one separately if that's alright.
Ichiko Yagura Despite her age, Ichiko is actually one of the more capable characters in Siren. A practical, observant girl, she is capable of being used for either stealth or combat. Notably, she is the only companion character that will pick up heavy artillery and use it, not counting Takeaki Misawa who starts with it. However, although she is perfectly capable of knocking someone down to escape, Ichiko prefers to run rather than fight. When given the choice, she will generally choose to run.
The letter and others show that her personality outside of traumatic events is playful and sweet. She's also shown to be a fun-loving person who keeps her eyes open. She seems to be a little bit of a gossip, although only to her friends, and is clearly rather exciteable. She is very close to Noriko Kifune in particular and Noriko seems to focus a lot in her thoughts. It's hinted also that she knew about Noriko's teenage pregnancy but chose not to mention it to her until she was willing to talk. In-game, however, as she is confronted by one extreme horror to the next she grows steadily less prone to talking - apart from to herself, that is.
Ichiko is easily frightened and tends to seek places of safety. While at first she is eager and relieved to have Shigeru Fujita's help, after his death she's far less happy to be around others. The more people suffer at her hands, the more she realises that she has to escape them. However, almost always she will follow the directions of anyone older, perhaps out of a realisation that their experience might make them better survivors. While she appears not to remember the events themselves, the aftermath is more than enough for her. While, as mentioned, she can accept death just fine, she is horrified by the fact that she has killed someone - although not enough to wipe the blood off, as she wears it to the end. This is more likely a result of her trauma, however. When in shock, she was able to walk for hours until her body collapsed.
It's clear that she has a childish side to her; when listening to her randomly selected dialogue, she often calls for her Mommy in later levels and she seems fixated on returning home. She's also prone to performing origami with her letters, using pencils and crayons to colour in the unwritten parts. She desires normality more than anything. While she's resourceful and cleverly tricks a lot of enemies, she is just a young teen in the end. She cries easily when frightened and when she gets to a safe haven she's shown to give into that urge a lot more.
When Otoshigo is in charge, Ichiko's own words can be identified with a little careful study, for during her possessed times their voices become interchangeable. Her own voice becomes less expressionate and more distracted and her words often fixate on her mother or the Bright Win. She seems fixated on the boat, on Noriko and on the dead woman that was pulled from the sea. The woman herself, one of the Mother's avatars, does not recognise her when confronted but curiously ignores her after an initial query - most likely due to Ichiko's reaction to her questioning, which is to fall to her knees and cry out in confusion. As time goes on, particularly at the point she was taken from, she's revealed to be losing her more recent memories and struggling to retain them.
The Otoshigo The Otoshigo is far more childish than one would expect an ancient being to be. Having been abandoned for so long by Mother and trapped beneath the sea by her power and her Avatars, it has developed a strong hatred for its former companion. As it speaks with Ichiko's voice, it is difficult to identify the Otoshigo's gender, if it even has one - even its true form is little more than a head with many limbs. The myths of the island tell that Otoshigo's sea is cursed; any who drown in it will be taken by an 'evil spirit', and any pregnant woman who steps in the water will give birth to a cursed child granted visions by Otoshigo and Mother. The myths tell that the Otoshigo will enter the body of the drowned and return to their family, but if rejected it will abandon the body to its fate once more.
The part of the personality that most see at first glance is the Otoshigo's sadism. Anyone who comes across it in that dimension is an enemy and it will kill before it asks questions. It isn't entirely unreasonable; if it finds you interesting enough, it'll let you live a little longer, but the Otoshigo is easily bored. It can, however, be distracted quite easily. Otoshigo's anger at Mother transfers to her creations; it will massacre any of them it finds and often berate them for getting in the way as it does. The Otoshigo is obsessed with its own freedom and with revenge on Mother. While Mother exists, its body remains trapped under the sea.
The Otoshigo is quite fearless. Its near-immortality makes it reckless and attempts to threaten it amuses it greatly. It has a violent and harsh temper and no knowledge of social norms. Its easy boredom leads to a lack of focus, which allows it to be easily evaded or distracted. It doesn't understand people, somewhat understandably since it was trapped before they came into existence, but a little less so as it has been utilizing sightjacking for quite some time. Everything it does is for itself; nothing else matters and it can be quite callous on that point. It leaves Ichiko to die, kills Shigeru Fujita for no reason other than because it could and relentlessly murders those that had previously been host to the shiryo.
Otoshigo seems to be quite introspective; it occasionally wonders why Mother and the other left it behind even after all of this time. It has, after all, had little to do in the past few thousand years other than to mess with boats and think about the past. This may also be the reason why it giggles so often in joy. Despite the fact that it often stalks the player character, it will be confused if you hide and can even look right at you at times only to wander off without seeing you. Its intelligence is about on the level of a child at times and it has a basic, very direct approach to things. It has limited knowledge on anything outside of the island, as it would be unable to sightjack anyone that was not within his range. However it adapts fast; for example - when confronted with the recoil of the gun, it first staggers back from the force of it, then adjusts to it and soon handles it with ease.
Considering that the yamibito revive shortly after death, it soon becomes clear that Otoshigo is killing them for fun as it will return to kill them over and over again. It often speaks to itself, sometimes calling out to whomever's there, sometimes laughing and occasionally singing. It turns the presence of others into a game of hide-and-seek, where the hider will be massacred if found. However, Otoshigo often speaks of being lonely and the cutscene in which it finally escapes the sea is called "Joy". The game itself makes a point of mentioning that Otoshigo is rejoiced at its freedom - although it's also quite clear that it has no idea what to do with it. While it is angry at Mother for abandoning it and her followers by proxy earn its wrath, the Otoshigo's primary goal is to get out of the dimension it's trapped in. Initially, its goal appears to have had two points; the shibito, its servants, are sent to take down anything human that might release Mother, while its possession of Ichiko would have enabled it to try to free itself. It is clear that Otoshigo's limited intelligence did not recognise that Mother herself was behind its entrapment. It only wanted to ensure that if it was trapped, she would remain trapped also.
Other: Ichiko's primary ability is, like many people trapped in the netherworld, the ability to sightjack. This means that she can look through the eyes of other people within about a block's distance. Her natural abilities are about the same as any other fourteen year old. She's a tennis player, fast on her feet, but still pretty average-skilled. While she's perfectly capable of beating someone up with a trophy almost as big as she is, indicating she has some strength to her, she's easily tired out by it.
Her possession by the Otoshigo, however, gives her some benefits. While it is all that keeps her alive, the Otoshigo also regenerates health when it is in control and slightly when it is not; when the Otoshigo is in charge, her body will heal entirely in a second, even from fatal attacks. The more damage, the longer it takes, but it would take a massive amount to knock it out for long. It also appears to gain the odd ability to magic ammunition out of nowhere. Otoshigo also has the ability to reanimate corpses under his control by sending Shiryo (evil spirits) into them. Those corpses retain their memories but focus on the tasks he sets. However, none of these abilities are available to Ichiko herself; they are entirely dependant on the Otoshigo's consciousness. Additional Links: N/A
I found an exchange diary at the burnt-out school.
It was... eye-opening! Really! Kind of frightening, though. The diary said that people who die here become empty. That they have to be impaled with a special stake, or else- else something else will get inside. Is that what those shadows are? Some kind of... evil spirit?
Oh, this is too much! I want to be home. I want to go spend time with Nakajima and Noriko, and be scolded by mom for forgetting to take my shoes off.
I know I could go elsewhere, but even though it's scary, I want to go on here. I want to find my way home, so I can see everyone again. It's all that's keeping me going right now.
But sometimes, I feel like- like something's wrong. Like I'm not going to get home. I don't want to be a bother, but please, if you can, can someone please talk to me? I don't like this at all.
From Ichiko
Third Person:
Ichiko was getting very tired. Not to mention hungry.
It had been approximately seven hours since she had awoken in the Bright Win. In all of that time, she had spent time beating taller people into unconsciousness, running all over a ship, an island and a school, setting off several traps and falling down a hill.
It was with her greatest of relief that she climbed over the window into the storeroom, ignoring the broken glass in favour of sitting down with her head on her knees.
This was a disaster. She felt like crying; and now, with this brief respite, she had the chance. How long she hid there, she didn't know. All she knew was that by the end, when her tears were dried, all she could think about was home. Home would be a very nice place to be right now. She'd run into the house, not caring about the blood on her - maybe even clean, if she could find some water that wasn't red! - and fling herself on her mom. Ichiko could almost feel the warmth of her mother's body against her, holding her close.
That would be the most amazing thing in the world if it were true. The fact that it wasn't almost made her start crying again. But that wouldn't do anything. Rubbing her eyes fiercely, she tried to focus on the positives. Once she got home, she could have food! There hadn't been anything to eat in the burnt-out schoolhouse, or anywhere, in fact, that she could find. Oh, what she would have given for a sweet bean sandwich made by her mom. It wasn't fair! Or egg salad. She'd even have settled for cucumber and green onions.
Her stomach grumbled sadly and she smoothed down her blue skirt, stained as it was. There was nothing that could be done for it but to wait and try to get out of here soon. That man with the gun was probably going to notice the torn drapes sooner or later.
If this information is not enough, I have expanded further on the personalities of Otoshigo here with evidence towards my finds and Ichiko here.
