[Blink blink. Narukami stares at the screen for a few seconds, not saying a word. This deadpan look, community, is the look of one in deep thought.]
[And then he pokes the screen. Tap tap. Tap tap tap.]
...I guess it doesn't work with computers.
[A couple more taps for good measure. Yu, there is no way to access the TV world through a computer. You'll just have to accept it.]
So it looks like a lot of you know about Shadows already. Can't say I was expecting that, but at least we aren't the only ones. There's something on my mind and I'd guess a community full of people who already know about Shadows would be the right people to ask.
Those bigger Shadows that we keep running into--Hanamura's, Satonaka's, and Amagi's. They're some reflection of themselves, I get that part.
[Beat.]
...Why didn't I have one?
--
[Several days later, the community broadcasts Narukami in his room. He has a completely flat expression, (perhaps more so than usual) and speaks with no audible inflection to his voice.]
I really hope no kids were watching this when we were fighting Kanji's Shadow.
...If they were I'm not going to be the one to explain anything. Sorry.
Third Person:
'I have nothing.'
Tap. Tap tap Taptaptaptaptap. Where before he could pass through the screen as easily as if it was water, now he met resistance. No matter how he tried, it was just a hand on glass. Why? Why had everything just...stopped?
Narukami could feel all of them drifting apart. Rise left without a word, Kanji was already distancing himself, and the rest were all busy studying for entrance exams. It was like nothing had ever happened between all of them. Ever since they caught...caught...wait, who did they catch? How had they caught him? No, did it matter? They caught the murderer and it was over.
'Everything is 'nothing'.'
Was it? No--no, Narukami knew it wasn't over. Knew, somehow, that there was more to this. And when he whirled on the Shadow in his room, he knew perfectly well that something was not as it seemed.
'Friendship is an illusion. You are alone. You are empty.'
"Persona!" The ethereal card descended to his hand; where should have been the symbol of the Fool was only blank white. Impossible, impossible--he shattered the card in his hand, but Izanagi refused to answer.
'You have no bonds.'
"Persona--!" The Magician. Yosuke, his partner in their fight and his closest friend. Again the card descended and again it was blank. It shattered as easily as ever, but Pyro Jack was nowhere in sight.
"Persona!" Chariot. Chie Satonaka. Blank, broken, and no response from Ara Mitama.
'You have nothing at all.'
"Persona!" Priestess. Yukiko Amagi. Just as blank as the last, and as he went to break it...he came away with nothing but a useless piece of paper in his hand.
'You're just like me.'
There was nothing he could do. No way he could fight. All the Personas that should have been in his arsenal, the unimaginable power that should have been at his disposal...and Yu Narukami was left helpless.
"Stop it...You're wrong!" He began to back away and the Shadow was on him in a moment, hands around his throat; the next thing he knew, someone was calling his name. Why? Did anything even matter anymore?
...Stupid. Of course it mattered. Nothing was over, hadn't he known that? Someone was calling him. Someone was reaching out for him. And the next thing Narukami knew, he was being pulled out of the block-shaped defenses of Shadow Mitsuo by Yosuke and Jiraya.
Everyone was there--waiting for him. This battle wasn't over by a longshot; it had only just started. They looked at him with relief seeing him back to reality, and Narukami found himself coming to a realization.
"I am not empty!"
He had Yosuke and the others at his back. The number of people in Inaba he had forged unbreakable bonds with...each one was a part of him. His friendships gave him power...power enough to defeat this Shadow.
The cards fell one by one to his hand, each Arcana revealing a Persona stronger than the one before in a rapid-fire onslaught against the Shadow. Hanged Man, Makami. Emperor, King Frost. Priestess, High Pixie. Magician, Pyro Jack. Moon, Yamata-no-Orochi. Lovers, Leanan Sidhe. Strength, Rakshasa. Chariot, Ara Mitama. Finally, his own Arcana; the Fool, Izanagi.
Even if his friends were to be separated by an impassable distance, those bonds would never fade.
Yu Narukami was the furthest from 'empty' that any human could possibly be.
