Akira Inugami | Wolf Guy - Part 2

[personal profile] not_so_big_and_bad 2012-04-14 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Character Notes:
History:
Akira Inugami was born to a pure-blood werewolf mother, and a human father. In his youth, his father hid Akira and his mother away from the world at large, using his family's wealth and influence to provide for them and keep them safe. They moved around many times, always to more and more remote locales, the last of which was in the wilds of Alaska, when Akira was around six or seven years old. It was a well-isolated area, right next to a Timber Wolf sanctuary. Akira's mother was his entire world, and he left her side very rarely. The only friends he had were the wolves that roamed around their cabin. For a time, they were very happy.

One day, while Akira was out, humans he didn't recognize came. Humans in unmarked suits and attack vehicles, with a great cache of high-powered weapons. They destroyed Akira's home, setting it ablaze, then murdered his father and took his mother away. Akira never knew why. The men told him nothing but that he was a "useless half-breed" and filled him with bullet holes, leaving him for dead in the snowy tundra. He woke up just after they left, his regeneration kicking in for the first time and saving his life, much to his own surprise.

After being stranded in the Alaskan wilds for several months and living with the wolves, his extended family finally found him. They took him back to Japan, where his Aunt took responsibility for him. She was shocked several years later, when he changed right in front of her, transforming in front of the full moon. Still, he was family, so she kept his secret. He bounced around from school to school for the next few years, never finding his place in any town he went to. His travels were extensive, but no place offered peace.

At around age 15, Akira arrived at a brand new school. Hakutoku Academy. One of those troubled schools, that tries to pretend like everything is perfectly fine on the inside. The kind of place that just sweeps problems away, rather than deal with them head-on. Where the good kids desperately hope the bad ones don't notice them, as they just try to make it through the year. In other words, one of the many examples of poor school leadership that currently plague Japan. Full of adults who don't want to accept responsibility for anything. When Akira arrived, he immediately asserted himself, making fools of the local thugs, and an enemy of their leader, Dou Haguro. He also met Akiko Aoshika, his teacher, who turned out to be a woman he'd accidentally saved on the previous night. Several other people also entered his life. Kimura, the class president and honor student. Ryuuko, Haguro's crazed, violent girlfriend. Chiba, Haguro's second-in-command, and the only one amongst his ilk with a sense of honor.

The two had an immediate, unspoken connection, though Akira tried to deny it and play things off. He even went as far as to deny ever seeing her before. Later, she surprise-visited Akira, right on the night of the full moon. Caught in a moment of emotional instability, Akira lost control of his ability, exposing her to his transformed state. He barely managed to convince her it was a special mask he was wearing, and changed the subject by bringing up her invasion of his privacy. It was enough of a tirade to chase her away. Unfortunately, she was chased right into the path of a rapist. Oddly enough, he was stopped in the act by a runaway lion, who had escaped the nearby zoo. Half-mad and enraged, it butchered the man, and Akira arrived in time to stop it from doing the same to Aoshika. In a one-sided battle, Akira was finally forced to kill the beast by quickly snapping its neck.

Meanwhile, the escalation between Akira and Haguro's gang continued. The first major crux of it came when Haguro assigned one of his men to break up a school assembly. With WEAPONS. Already enraged over Akira crippling his brother, the lackey was all too happy to do so. The resulting frakas killed 82 people and destroyed the school gymnasium. The only reason it wasn't worse was due to Akira's intervention and subsequent killing of the perpetrator. Akira blamed himself for the incident, realizing that his own flippant behavior toward Haguro's crew exacerbated their already violent natures.

After the afore-mentioned school shooting, Akira had really had enough of Haguro. Conflicted and angry, he confronted him, only to be cut short by assassins after Haguro's life. He stayed out of sight, watching the battle from above, only stepping in when he lost patience. Akira transformed, taking out the last assassins and then turning his sights on Haguro. He showed Dou what he really was, transforming in front of him and terrorizing him to the point of insanity. Humiliating him into know just how weak he was, compared to Akira. Then, with a final taunt, he left Haguro and the entire town, choosing to settle elsewhere.

While walking around his new home range, he met Chiba by chance. He had left Haguro and school, choosing to live a different life than one in Haguro's service. For former enemies, the two had more in common than Akira had thought. They talked over lunch, with Chiba telling him of the changes that had occurred since he left school. Of course, Haguro didn't like this one bit, seeing as Chiba was a former su. He captured and tortured Chiba near to death out of sheer anger and jealousy. He left Chiba in front of the hospital Akira was at, beaten, raped, and missing his tongue. Frustrated by further guilt, Akira gave Chiba his blood to help him survive. Little did he know that it did save his life, but it also turned Chiba into a revenge-fueled monster. A human with super-human ability and a raging bloodlust. A monster thirsting for revenge on the one who brutalized him. After a confrontation that left a trail of collateral damage, Haguro barely managed to kill the transformed, monstrous Chiba. This only solidified his focus on destroying Akira, now convinced that it was his destiny to kill monsters, and that Akira was a threat to the superiority of mankind. To draw him back and into a final showdown, he kidnapped Aoshika, who had just realized her feelings for Akira, and had her raped on camera. He used the video to force Akira to come after him, putting him through a horrible gauntlet, and using Akira's weakness on the New Moon to his advantage.

Powerless, yet determined, Akira fought his way through dogs, traps, explosives, and crazed gunmen at Haguro's compound. He freed Aoshika, and the two of them made their way out, only for Haguro to confront them. Thus began the final duel of the two. After a series of trading strikes, Haguro had gained the upper hand. The combination of the New Moon, Akira's heavy blood-loss, and the fatigue of his muscles was too great a disadvantage. Haguro began to take his time, slicing off bits of Akira with his sword, deciding to kill him by inches. He cut off his left arm, and the fingers on his remaining hand, crippled his leg, and drove his sword through Akira's chest.

Just when all seemed lost, Akiko's desperation triggered something inside of Akira, forcing a transformation. He rose, driving Haguro into a fit of fear at seeing the boy he thought dead rise yet again, and in his monstrous state. Akira merely marched forward as Haguro came to him, embracing him and allowing the sword to pierce his own chest. Thus Haguro fell, having finally come to terms with his own fear and jealousy of Akira, his soul metaphorically dragged to Hell by all the lives he had destroyed.

Akira's power finally fizzled as he fell into Akiko's arms, with the cops and medics arriving just in time. They took the two away to separate hospital areas. Akiko, aching to see Akira again, begged his Aunt to be allowed to visit. She ended up flying her all the way to Alaska, to wait in the place Akira's memories were strongest. The wolf sanctuary. Akira, on the other hand, woke up in a completely alien facility. No mere hospital, but a high security research facility. His struggle was only just beginning.

Personality:
For most of the manga, Akira was a rather contradictory boy, forced between the self he wanted the world to see, and the self that really reflected who he was. Not even Akira seemed to fully know which is which, at times. How often can one put on a front, before that front starts to affect who they really are?

For one thing, Akira was a master of self-denial. He constantly talked about how he didn't want or need other people, yet always found himself drawn to them. He's the offspring of two very social species, humans and werewolves, and it's in his blood to seek out others, no matter how much he told himself otherwise. He told himself that Aoshika didn't mean anything to him, yet he was always looking out for her. This was easy to see, due to the many instances where he saved or checked up on her. When she fell on him by accident in his apartment, he told himself that he was above base desires, but couldn't deny the way his body reacted to hers. Arousal and shame. He said human lives didn't mean much in the big scheme of things, yet always intervened when lives were put in danger around him. This veneer started to crumble as he grew closer to Aoshika, and finally shattered when he saw the video of Aoshika's torment at Haguro's hands. His own inner self forced him to confront his hypocrisy, spurring him to action. It gave him no choice but to accept his own feelings and charge forward to protect what he loved.

Being a wolf, Akira is also not without his more vicious instincts. Though he was often loathe to attack or even defend himself against human attacks, his patience was never infinite. This can easily be seen when he savages the large army of thugs that attacks him in the beginning, endangering Aoshika, killing several of them. Or when he mercy kills the lion in the park, in order to spare it the slow, painful option of being shot to death by police. Or when he loses control and murders several of the assassins sent after Haguro, merely due to them reminding him of his past trauma. His spite is especially evident when taking on the thugs responsible for Aoshika's rape. He methodically takes them down with brutal efficiency, even going so far as the torture one of them for information. There's no question that when his wrath finally kindles, there's little he won't do.

Akira has always felt an immense amount of persecution from the world. Inferiority complex at its finest. His egotism and arrogance would put people off naturally, a product of his super-human status. He was stronger than anyone around him and he knew it. Judging from his grades, he was smarter, too. This caused a large amount of malice to be directed at him, especially by other males. Their jealousy gradually turned to discontent, then rage. This escalation had always ended the same way through Akira's life. Violence. Then, when they saw that their attacks did no good, it only made them even MORE vengeful. Eventually it would get to the point where he'd have to leave. This cycle repeated in every place Akira moved to, every school he'd ever tried to learn in. Due to this, he considered humans to be brash, vicious, and haughty, yet failed to understand that he shared some of those exact traits. It was only in his darker, introspective moments that he realized he hated seeing his own behavior in others. It was a self-fulfilling prophecy. He didn't expect humans to respect him, so he showed no respect to them. While people did feel unjustified anger toward him, he didn't help the situation by constantly antagonizing them. It was only after the school shooting that Akira was humbled. He learned from the experience, changing his attitude toward those he disliked.

Loneliness had always been a large part of Akira's mental landscape. He'd always lived alone, away from his extended family, using their resources to get what he needed. Their wealth allowed him to live comfortably, away from other people and isolated in his apartment. The whole place barely looked lived in, like he got too lazy to even attempt making it like a home. His walls were bare, his living room sparse except for books, his computer, and something to sit on. It reflected the solitude he constantly lived with. Akira, as far as he was concerned, was the last of his kind. In a world of six billion humans, he was completely alone. The last embers of a species that's about to die out completely. Add into this the fact that anyone who got too close to him tended to suffer for it. Pushing people away protected both them, and himself, or so he thought. Eventually, Akira realized that trouble would happen REGARDLESS of his presence, and if something bad went down, it was better for him to be close by instead of running away from his problems.

Akira's relation to Akiko Aoshika had several layers to it. On the one hand is her matronly, motherly appeal. She brought Akira's deep-seated mother-loss issues to the forefront, due to her always looking after him, and the way she seemed to see right through his act. She cared about him. On the other hand was her very attractive physical appearance. Akiko was a beautiful woman, and it had often brought her attention from the wrong kinds of people. He was aroused by her, but at the same time devoted to her well-being. The deepening of this relationship was a focal point of the series, as was the constant shifting it did. From teacher and student, to caretaker and charge, to lovers. Akiko represented all the better aspects of humans, in Akira's eyes.

Haguro was the opposite end of the spectrum, perfectly personifying everything in humanity Akira hated. Haguro wass brash, sadistic, spiteful, and utterly obsessed with his own power, and crushing anything that threatened it. To Haguro, Akira was many things. Hated enemy, rival, and object of adoration. Ever since encountering Akira, Haguro was introduced to emotions that he never before emerged inside of him. He was largely dead inside. Seeing a true werewolf unlocked his fears and passions, causing him to obsess over Akira both as a rival and an equal. Something he couldn't accept. His psyche was torn between wanting to destroy Akira, wanting to own Akira, and wanting Akira to accept him. This was one-sided, as Akira largely thought of Haguro as an evil he'd rather not deal with. This attitude proved to be Akira's undoing, as Haguro's knowledge of this only made him escalate their rivalry into harming the people around Akira, in order to goad him into battle. In his death, Haguro was once again made to feel small and weak, his bravado shattered by Akira's true, monstrous power.

By the end of the manga, Akira's personality has transformed for the better, despite all of the trauma he and others suffered. He's no longer outright spiteful of humans, realizing that some of them are truly worth knowing and protecting. That being said, he also hasn't lost his edge. His snark still comes out in force at times, even if it's usually reserved for people who deserve it.

First Person:
[The screen is dark at first. Then a large, golden eye shows up on the video feed, in an extreme close-up. Definitely not a human eye, either.]

Okay...Look, nobody freak out, alright? There's been a little mishap and I kinda' let my emotions spike. I ended up changin' form. Now I can't change back. I'm pretty sure it'll pass, but I don't want anyone to think I got eaten by something, or wonder why there's a giant beast usin' my computer. Everything's fine, everything's cool. It's just me, in another body.

[With that, he slowly backs up, letting the camera gradually take in his full, beastly form. An eight-foot tall, bi-pedal, wolfen monster.]

This is kinda' embarassin', but I did contact the system for another reason. I was just wondering if maybe...someone could send me some extra pants? I tore up the bottoms of these when I changed, and I don't know when I can change back. I'm sure as hell not walkin' down to the store like this, just for new pants. I'll come back with the cops on my tail! Not in the mood to get shot full of holes, tonight.

Third Person:

He wondered how he had gotten used to this level of comfort with total strangers. It could have been any combination of things, really. Could have been the fact that he was desperate for any sort of relationship to cling to. Could have been seeing other sentient non-humans for the first time since he was a child. Could have been because he was offered shelter at a time when he needed it most. Whatever the root reason for it, he was...glad. For the first time in his life, he was glad about his circumstances.

"Guess I'd better see what they're up to," he said, yawning as he got up, then opening his laptop. He was still a little groggy from waking up, but he nonetheless always had to check the network. It was still hard to really wrap his head around. An online area that serves as a waypoint for inter-dimensional communication. Like something out of a bad science fiction movie, really. Amazingly, but unbelievable. Still, he'd seen the proof himself, when one of his online guests teleported into his room.

"Actually, I don't have much room to talk," he murmured to himself, brushing his hair and teeth, "Here I am, a fuckin' werewolf, questioning bizarre shit happening around me. I should really be used to just about anything, by now. Gotta' stop wondering why and just go with it. "Guess it's nice to be able to actually talk to people, without worryin' about consequences. Finally, a place where I can find people with even more bizarre lives than mine."

When he was done, he slid on fresh clothes and sat down, chatting with a few of his new acquaintances. It was so interesting, hearing all of these stories, the tales of so many different kinds of worlds. He wanted to just ESCAPE. To leave his Japan and not come back, just spend his time venturing from world to world. Hell, if he was lucky, he could even find a few werewolves somewhere out there. It didn't matter if they weren't exactly his type. Then there was the matter of Aoshika...No. She was better off without him. As long as he was around her, she'd always get caught up in his troubles. She deserved a happier life. A life WITHOUT him. They'd made their peace with each other, they'd parted in tears, but it was all necessary. He had to cut the final link.

"Well, nothing's gonna' get done if I sit on my ass, wondering if someone is gonna' help me out with this. I've just gotta' summon up the stones to ask for it. I need to get the hell off this world."
