Character: Raenef V. Not to be confused with Raenef the I, II, III, or IV Fandom: Demon Diary Character Notes:
History:
150 years before our story starts, Raenef IV fought in the Hangma war, a war between the demons and gods (who are actually more akin to angels). As one of the strongest in history, he kills so many gods that they place a curse upon his name, though it isn’t meant to come to pass until 150 years after the war has ended.
Because he’s a sneaky little thing, Raenef figures out a way around the curse. Using a spell, he brings upon himself an early death, tying his spirit to the Raenef name. In order to maintain the curse and to have an heir to tie his name to, his son is pulled from the future, though not without consequences and before his actual death occurs.
You may be asking what happens to the son that was actually born from that timeline. Presumably, he never was and Raenef is about to exist only because he was pulled from a different future.
So, Raenef V is born, though only with a portion of his personality. Luckily for me, it was the cute side, but this means he has another, darker side waiting and without the innocence to hold it in, it’s not going to be pretty when it does come out. That doesn’t happen for a while, though.
So, without a family, Raenef is forced to join a thief’s guild in order to survive. Though every day is spent stealing for food, he manages to make important friends among them and even becomes a valuable member, though more for his personality than anything else. Still, he learns how to be swift, shown when he can outrun guards fairly often.
It’s around this time, while running from the guards, that he first notices Eclipse, who’s there looking for the next demon lord now that Raenef IV has died.
And this is where I choose to start canon, since I want to lead up to him accepting the demon lord position. Because it’s free board and food.
Personality:
The Raenef we first meet, and spend the majority of the time with, has much more heart than brains. Though he is able to carry on a normal conversation, it almost seems like he takes the extra effort to come to conclusions that make little sense. This is evident in his letters, which often show nearly every third word marked out, but replaced with the right one, or frequent misunderstandings.
Still, he’s able to function socially, to a degree. He was very well liked within the guild and makes friends with the other three important characters easily enough. He may fail when put into new social situations, such as assuming he did well during the ball when he was actually laughed at, but he knows enough manners to show he wasn’t raised in a jungle.
Underneath all of that is his kindness. He works hard to please Eclipse and even leaves once to make himself stronger in order not to embarrass him. He spares both of his friend’s lives, even though they had come to kill him and makes a very bad demon lord, despite his efforts.
And his efforts are very hit and miss. In one panel, he’s very dedicated but in the next, it seems hard enough to make him give up. When he did leave the castle to become stronger, he regretted it as soon as he ran out of tomatoes and wished he could go back. Still, he’s easy to get motivated again.
There are exceptions to all of these rules. He is able to learn some history, even reciting a bit to Chris, as well as do some basic magic. The Dark Arrow spell is an important one and he planned to use it to kill Erutis after she attacks him.
All in all, he seems like a very excitable child. There are frequent mentions of playing, his attention span rarely stays on one thing, and he seems to come into most situations ignorant.
At two separate points, he becomes Dark Raenef, though both times are thanks to magic and don’t last very long. While this side is in power, he’s a demon lord in everything he does. He’s faster to reprimand Eclipse, he’s willing to wage war for the simplest of things, and he doesn’t care about his friends at all. For a clear picture, it’s easy to say he’s everything Raenef isn’t, both good and bad.
And in the end, we get a fusion of the two. The real Raenef is much smarter than his innocent counterpart but much kinder than his evil side. Though he’s only shown briefly, he redeems himself by insulting another demon at the same kind of ball he was made a fool at but then goes to smile proudly to Eclipse.
Other:
*Raenef drools pretty often in his sleep. It's cute. *Though not otherwise polite, he does address people by polite names upon meeting them, such as mister. It also helps that he probably has trouble remembering their names.
Ek Eclipse said he woo would stay with me four forever…
[Switch to video, which shows Raenef sitting in his room with a smile on his face, reading out loud as he writes, though he marks things out regularly.] …forever, even though it won’t take me that long to become a better demon lord. It’s harder than I thought but I can already do the Dark Arrow – that should be a ‘w’, not an ‘h’! - and the party went really good. I didn’t burn down any towns yet but I think he’ll let me skip that part for now.
[He pauses for a second before writing again.] He laughed today too. It was really nice and I hope he does it more. I even quit making fun of the spell’s name.
[The next part he doesn’t write.] It’s not dark OR an arrow.
Third Person:
Reading was hard. It wasn’t that he couldn’t read, it wasn’t even that he didn’t like to read. It was true he had never read very much before but he never went to school and so he never had a reason to read. People didn’t just read for fun, now did they…?
But he was trying to read now, he really was. Eclipse was still pouting and he had to make up for embarrassing him. So all he had to do was read a little history and collect magic and he would impress him! It shouldn’t be hard, especially since he knew he could show them all he could be a really good demon lord!
So why WAS it hard? The words would begin to blend and then they would try to use really big and old words that he didn’t know the meanings of. At first, he’d tried to ask but now it was late and he was by myself and he really wished he could focus on that sentence instead of thinking of how much more fun it would be to play.
Oh, it would be more fun to play! Maybe Eclipse will do something fun in the morning, after practice. He couldn’t just let him be bored all the time.
