Personality: Totori is a girl that's led a sheltered life until her adventure starts. With her mother's disappearance and subsequent death (that she doesn't know about), her father withdrew himself from life somewhat, becoming lazy and laid-back, and her older sister took over as her mother figure. That left Totori in a weird place: wanting to find out what happened to her mother, but not knowing how to look when her sister insisted she stay home for her safety. So as a little girl, she just stayed around the house and played with her sister. As she got a little older, she befriended Gino, who helped her get out of her shell a little. And then the fateful day came when Rorona came by her house and taught her alchemy. Those days were good ones for her: she could do something, learn something important! And she dove into her studies with a passion. But in the back of her mind, she always wondered what happened to her mother, and she longed for the day she could leave and find her answers.
As she starts her adventure, Totori's knowledge in alchemy, and her rudimentary training in hitting things with a staff, have given her a little confidence in herself, and while she's still very much a wallflower around new people, she's got enough of a self-image to go out and lead a group of her friends on an adventure. She makes new friends quickly, but she's a little shy around them for a while. Once someone is close to her, though, she never really lets go - she makes friends for life, and she'll do whatever it takes to keep them; she has a bad habit of worrying over everything. She does, however, depend on her friends rather hard for some time; she just doesn't have the force of will to travel alone.
Totori doesn't really handle herself well in conflict. She's definitely capable of combat, either physical by hitting things with her staff or alchemical by throwing constructs, but she doesn't like to fight unless her friends are in danger, in which case she'll do whatever she has to. That changes as she settles into her role as an adventurer, and she begins to see fights with monsters as a stepping stone to becoming a great and powerful adventurer like her mother.
When communicating with those she doesn't know, Totori isn't afraid to offer her (considerable) services either in combat or as an alchemist, but she's quiet about herself unless asked, or until she gets closer to the person she's talking to. Sometimes she needs a little push to get the right information out, especially if she's got a problem and she needs help but can't get herself to talk about it.
Other: Totori is an alchemist. She collects ingredient items from around the world and mixes them up following (or creating) recipies to get powerful output items she can use for attack or support. Part of her job includes making items to order for quests and turning them in for rewards. In her home world, she's one of three alchemists: herself, her master Rorona, and her master's master Astrid. Astrid hasn't been seen for years, though. Later in the game, Rorona will help Totori make her first Chim, a mini homonculus, via a vending machine, and then will show Totori how to make more with the right ingredients. Totori's ability to get on the community is via a recipe Rorona left lying around that produces a wooden charm in the shape of a duck. The charm is magical and provides her access to the community, including video and audio.

Looking around her room, she felt like she was in a dream. The snowman in the corner, permamently frosty and always volatile. The stick of dynamite. The wooden duck around her neck. The salves, the coal, the bags of flour... sometimes she still didn't believe she was an alchemist, and she was living it.
But... whether she liked it or not, her thoughts turned to her mother again. Could she really use this power to find her mother? It sure seemed like she was getting stronger, and a good bomb could cover for her any day, but she still couldn't do anything without Gino and Mel's help, and that didn't sit well with her. She needed to be someone that could go take what she wanted for herself, and not have to depend on others...
...but then she remembered the last time she'd gone out gathering, and had to fight that huge beast. Even her then-new ice bombs hadn't really hurt it, and the one time it'd gotten through her friends to hit her, she thought she would pass out from pain. Mel had paid it back for that by cutting the offending arm off in a fit of rage, but she was still scared. Scared enough to not want to leave her room for a few days. She looked out the window and let out a long sigh.
"Well... I'm not going to get any stronger by sitting in my room and wishing I were braver." She shook her head and walked over to her recipe book, looking for a specific one. "Maybe a lightning bomb would do the trick next time..." And she walked over to the huge box next to her bed and started rummaging through.
The one thought in the back of her mind as she looked through the stones and the supplement, was that she'd do whatever it took to become stronger. That was all she needed, now. So she wouldn't worry Ceci. So her father could get himself back on track. And so she could get her life in order again, and find the answers she'd been looking for.
