The food would be ready in a few minutes, she deemed, as she took off her apron and hung it on the kitchen wall. Dad was out late, probably drinking somewhere in a bar. At least, he took her incessant demand for him to do his vice somewhere else, though she would have to call him later. If things wouldn't go well, she would have to accompany him home drunk again. She sighed, afterward gracing her face with a lopsided smile. Her father was truly a strange one, she thought amused, but she held no complains. Family would always be family.
Going to the living room, she sighed once more when she saw those empty beer cans. He still went to a bar after this? Grabbing the trash bin, she began to collect the cans, tossing them in one after another. Her eyes traveled from one trash to the next as she searched for more of her father's irresponsible habits lying around. Whilst gathering, her gaze landed on Conan's sleeping form on the desk; his head on the table, resting on an opened book.
He never passed an afternoon without reading, she thought, smiling. Setting the task aside, she approached him carefully, tilting her head so she could take a closer glance at him. His glasses were still on. She smiled. What a studious boy. Supposing he was tired and just dozed off without knowing, she gradually took off his glasses fondly, assuming that sleeping with them on would prove to be a nuisance.
And then it hit her.
He was a splitting image of Shinichi when he was a kid. Fighting a gasp that threatened to escape her lips, she immediately conditioned herself that she shouldn't be surprised. She had already proven that Conan wasn't Shinichi, wouldn't be Shinichi. It would be impossible. Heck, maybe her missing him too much was rubbing off immensely. Shinichi wouldn't lie to her. There would be hell to pay if he did! But, in this light, Conan looked--she hurriedly composed herself. No, Ran, she reprimanded herself, you're not missing that dork!
Albeit scolding herself mentally, tears were already brimming in the corners of her eyes. Just where was he right now? The last time she talked to him was a long time ago and it was very brief. Hard was it to admit, it was plain as day that she missed him. It didn't help either that the boy before her slumbering peacefully reminded her of her childhood days with him, with that impossible egoistic detective otaku.
Sighing, she ran her hand through Conan's raven-haired locks as she gently placed his glasses down on the desk. When she turned around, what she saw made her gasp for real. Smoke? In the kitchen?
Great. The next time she would be talking to Shinichi, she would blame him for a ruined meal, too.
