Character: John Fitzgerald Byers Fandom: The X-Files Character Notes: History: If not for the assassination of JFK on November 22, 1963, John Fitzgerald Byers would instead be Bertram Byers, Jr. Luckily for him (though not so much for President Kennedy), Byers was born right after the assassination and the first stepping stone for his destiny as a patriot was set. He's been an idealist since childhood and still believes in things like truth, justice, freedom, and the American Dream. Around age 11, he decided he wanted to be a bureaucrat. His Big Dream was to spread the wonders of democracy throughout the world. In the late 1980s, he landed a job with the FCC. He thought he was on the right track, and in truth, he was... until he met a woman named Susanne Modeski at an electronics convention in 1989.
He immediately fell in love with her. Deeply, madly, and passionately in love — and it's because of her that he then met his future colleagues, Melvin Frohike and Richard Langly, though the circumstances were less than favorable and ended in Byers' first ever experience in a prison. She's also the reason why he is now wary of the government, why he isn't as naïve as he was when he was younger (though he hasn't lost his idealist attitude), and why he and his two pals now publish an independent newspaper called The Lone Gunman that seeks to expose all the less than honorable things the government does. He will not stand for injustice of any kind, especially when that injustice is coming from the people who are supposed to be the most moral.
Personality: Byers is very much what people would call a Good Guy. He fights the good fight, has strong morals, and is extremely intelligent: he can hack computers, can read and analyze medical information, can identify branched DNA, and knows about genetics and chemistry. He's polite, comes off as timid and shy at first glance, and is extremely clean-cut. Because of his appearance and his attitude, he's the “narc” of the group.
He's really not that much of a narc. He'll do things he's not supposed to, if he believes it's for the right reasons. He's not afraid to break into buildings! He's not afraid to publish things that might get him in trouble! He's not afraid to hack into networks and steal private information! But he has to have a reason for doing these things; you'll never catch him defacing money for fun, or sneaking around outside warehouses because he's bored. On that note, he's not always as brave as he should be, but he is very good at pretending.
Other:
Byers is coming in from canon where DDD's resident Langly has already mentioned this place and its craziness, so he will have some knowledge of it.
So this is — and I don't mean to offend anyone by using this particular word, so I'm sorry in advance if I do; I just can't think of a better way to put this whole thing — weird. I thought Langly was joking about this “place,” or maybe just talking about one of his games, but... hi, I guess? I'm Byers. You may or may not have heard about me, and if you have, I've got money on your knowing me as the “narc.”
I am not a narc. I am a patriot. I am fighting for this country and all it used to stand for, for the dreams of our Founding Fathers, for the force of good that America used to represent. If that makes me a narc in the eyes of some (I'm looking at you, Langly) then that's fine.
But I am not a narc.
And now that that's preemptively out of my system: Is anyone interested in reading a newspaper?
Third Person:
“Who drank my coffee?”
It's a simple enough question that should come with a simple “yes” or “no” answer, but that would require honesty and neither Langly nor Frohike are about to 'fess up to drinking the coffee. Not directly, anyway.
“It didn't have your name on it,” Langly points out.
That's all the answer Byers needs. He sighs, moves to the kitchen, and preps a new pot of coffee. If he doesn't have his coffee, he gets cranky. That's been a thing of his since college, where his roommates introduced him to the wonders of caffeine and he promptly became completely addicted.
He knows it's a drug. That doesn't bother him. It's not like he's an alcoholic or a heroin addict, or anything like that. It's just caffeine. He just goes into mild withdrawal when he doesn't have any. It's really no big deal.
The thought makes him wrinkle his nose. He doesn't want to be addicted to something, but he also doesn't want a headache or jitters, especially not today; today, they're going on a mission. Today, they're going undercover, and Byers does not want to be the one to blow it. That's Langly's job.
