History: Cyd Sherman started life out on the right track—she was a child prodigy violinist, she probably had great grades and friends and all the things that would make any girl happy, but then she caught her boyfriend cheating on her with the first chair oboist, set his cello on fire, and got addicted to a MMPORPG, which resulted in her being jobless, penniless, boyfriend-less and basically friendless, besides the people that she now plays with online. Those five people plus her make up the guild known as the Knights of Good. They stand for all that is good and just in the world or something like that, or at least they’re careful to be courteous in their slaying of enemies. In this world she’s known only as the name of her character, Codex, and is called that more often than her actual name.
The game is assumed to be World of Warcraft, but they never say the actual name. She’s so addicted to it that her therapist actually ‘broke up’ with her because she seemed unwilling to change her habits or cut back in any way.
All was well and good in the guild--they’re very comfortable online and trust each other with just about everything. They were all quite happy to stay online, however, even though they’re a local guild and could definitely leave their houses and see each other in person on a regular basis. That changed when Zaboo, a member of Codex’s guild, went offline for an alarming amount of time and showed up on Codex’s doorstep proclaiming that he was in love with her and she was in love with him as well.
He had cyberstalked her and found out where she lived, along with every bit of her private information, and then, because he wouldn’t leave and kept acting really creepy, she suggested on the voice chat that the entire guild meet in person so that she could acquire their help in getting the socially inept ‘warlock’ out of her apartment. Of course, it didn’t work out quite like she expected, and she wound up having to tell him directly to leave. Just when she thought she was safe, Zaboo’s mother showed up and punched her in the face for ‘stealing her son away’.
Soon after her arrival, Zaboo tried to hang himself which was thwarted by Codex pulling the Ethernet cord loose from the fan. When she questioned Zaboo as to why he would do that, he confessed that he ran away from his mother because she controlled every aspect of his life except for the internet, but that she was in the process of reading Internet For Dummies and soon he wouldn’t even have that. The guild heard the entire exchange over the microphone and they all decided to meet again, so Codex and Zaboo escaped her apartment. But alas, Zaboo’s mother found them, and it looked as though Zaboo would remain a prisoner forever, but the guild banded together and banished the evil troll from whence she came.
Zaboo’s mother is a real estate lawyer, so she got Codex evicted from her apartment shortly afterwards, and Zaboo moved with her to another one. She quickly took action however, and told Zaboo that he’s ‘a starter character’--he needed to ‘level up’ before she could even think about dating him. She then convinced her guild leader, Vork, to take Zaboo in as his roommate, with the rent fee of course being guild gold.
Soon afterwards, she bumped into a very attractive stuntman named Wade. Unfortunately their conversation was cut short because it was time for a raid, but all in all it was a positive, though slightly awkward, experience. When she signed on, she pulled her fellow female guildmates, Tink and Clara, into a separate chat and they encouraged her to go for it, stressing that sometimes real life is more important than gaming. When Wade arrived back at the complex, she jumped offline and began playing the violin to impress him. She ended up severely messing up that encounter and thought for sure that she’d ruined her chances with him, but the next time she saw him things weren’t so bad. He even thought that it was cool that she was a gamer, saying that his roommate was one too.
