John Watson [3/3]

Third Person:
John Watson was, at one point, a very brave man. Once, he would waste no time bandaging bullet wounds, setting broken bones, amputating limbs (though that had only been once, and never again), all in the middle of a battle. He would never think twice about being shot at, wouldn't blink when mortar went off around him and his fellow soldiers, wouldn't even cover his face against grit and sand. He was brave (reckless, stupid if Mycroft was to be believed), above all else.

After he was shot, though - after he got shot, he lost all that bravery. Instead of boldly storming through field hospitals and fixing those around him, he spent his time sitting in his studio apartment - a temporary place for soldiers who were permanently out of the field - staring at the wall, at his laptop, at the ceiling. He spent his nights in Afghanistan, waking up in cold sweats and choking down sobs because he'd lost that spark that had made the world so alive. His psychologist explained that this was normal, that he would come to terms with civilian life, that a blog would help, that his leg would get better and he'd stop having nightmares, maybe - but of course he didn't believe her. He wouldn't come to terms, and he'd stagnate and grow old in a stupid flat with nothing to motivate him to do brave, stupid, brash things again. And that, frankly, was terrifying.

And then, one day, he ran into an army buddy who, by complete chance, knew the most incredible, mad man in all of London, if not the world. And that man only had to glance at him to know that he shouted himself awake in his sleep, that he hated his one room flat, that his limp was all in his head and that, most importantly, he needed something. And by sheer dumb luck, he'd decided that John was worth his time. In less than two days, John's limp was gone, his hands stopped shaking, he laughed honestly and he'd shot a man with no thought because it was the right thing to do.

Mycroft had been right about one thing: he had to fire his therapist. Because all she had wanted him to do was write in his blog when there was nothing to write about. Sherlock Holmes, on the other hand, did the one things he had been unable to do: give him a life worth writing about.
