Character Notes:

The Avatar cast has spiraled into a strange and unusual AU at DDD. Azula is Fire Lord and her father is thought dead. For Iroh, he has not seen Zuko in two years, traveling across the world searching for him AND covertly gathering intelligence on the goings on in the Fire Nation and mustering the Order of the White Lotus.

History:

Iroh was once the heir apparent to Fire Lord Azulon, celebrated general of the Fire Nation and the infamous “Dragon of the West”. While little is known about his childhood growing up with his brother Ozai, one can assume that Iroh himself had some unusual influences upon him. Unlike his brother, he was a jovial man even during his siege of Ba Sing Se, joking in the letters and gifts he sent home to his family.

However, Iroh's life, and perhaps the fate of the world itself, changed completely when during the battle to take the great Earth Kingdom capital, he lost his son and only child Lu Ten. Iroh was completely devastated by his son's death, returning home shortly afterwards and putting an end to the six hundred day siege. During this time, his brother approached their father in a bid to grab the right of succession, an act which spawned detrimental outcomes for his family and Ozai's children. Though Azulon is shown clearly and vehemently protesting the idea of betraying his first born, somehow Ozai does indeed become Fire Lord after his father's death and Iroh is seen never attempting to take back his birth right.

(Note: Never stated, but popular fan theory believes that Iroh willingly abdicated his crown to Ozai by virtue of Ozai having a lineage to bequeath to the throne. This is the headcanon I'm going with.)

Fast forward several years later.

Ozai has banished Zuko, the crown prince, and has sent him on the believed to be wild goose chase of finding and capturing the Avatar. Iroh accompanies his conflicted nephew into his exile, acting as an advisor and father-figure to Zuko. Through out the first book, Iroh often grates against his nephew's zealotry for regaining his father's love and his honor by capturing Aang, but never waivers in supporting Zuko emotionally and physically whenever he can. Going so far as to help Zuko sneak aboard General Zhao's invasion fleet as they try to conquer the Northern Water Tribe. However, General Zhao's blind ambition nearly destroys the delicate spiritual balance of the world when he kills the Moon Spirit. Iroh, enraged at Zhao's carelessness and greed, attacks him. He is branded a traitor and the reason for the failure of the invasion.

Book Two finds Iroh and Zuko as wanted criminals, dodging the Fire Nation by hiding amongst the thousands of refugees migrating to Omashu and Ba Sing Se. As Zuko's bugfuck crazy sister Azula enters the story, Iroh decides to try and teach Zuko more advanced Firebending techniques for confrontation between brother and sister was inevitable. Eventually, they settle in Ba Sing Se under aliases and Iroh's adoration for the tea making arts lands them a comfortable life as proprietors of a tea shop. For a while, Zuko seemed like he was content with his new life till Azula showed up. Azula capitalizes on Zuko's desire for his father's love and approval and Zuko betrays Iroh in the caverns below Ba Sing Se as Iroh tries to protect the Avatar and Katara.

Book Three has Iroh in prison for defending the Avatar. Zuko's betrayal leaves a wide rift between them, Iroh refusing to speak to him when he is visited in prison. While in jail, Iroh feigns mental feebleness, fooling his guards into believing him harmless and broken. Behind their backs and under their noses, Iroh begins to exercise and work out to the point that he has to stuff his clothes to keep up the guise of his large belly. Whither this trim down was purely for the purpose of preparing to escape or a means of keeping his sanity while locked up remains debatable. During the Day of Black Sun, Iroh escapes and is not seen till near the very end of season when Zuko and the Avatar's group joins the Order of the White Lotus's camp outside Ba Sing Se. Iroh and Zuko reunite and Zuko begs for forgiveness, which his uncle gives without hesitation. Later on, as Zuko moves to stop Azula and Aang “Pheonix King Ozai”, Iroh and the White Lotus liberate Ba Sing Se from Fire Nation occupation.

The finale shows the cast relaxing at Iroh's tea shop.

Personality:

Iroh is a jovial, relaxed, dryly humored old man. He is friendly and welcoming to almost everyone and acts as Zuko's mentor and father figure through the series and to just about anyone he meets, including a would-be mugger. He enjoys music, the strategy game Pai Sho, good food (with a pronounced weakness for roasted duck), and is generally a lover of the simple pleasures and luxuries of life, especially tea. Iroh's also a bit of a ladykiller, flirting amicably with several women here and there, even pretending to be passed out to enjoy the presence of the bounty hunter Jun. He also has, due to his love of all things tea related, knowledge of botany and horticulture (though he can't quite keep his facts straight), is a skilled musician with the horn and the pipa, (an instrument that seems to be a smaller shamisen in structure) and has a profound respect for the other cultures of the world, even studying the Waterbending tribes and developing his technique for redirecting lightening from their philosophies.

Even his fearsome nickname, Dragon of the West, hides a compassionate and wise story. Instead of killing the last two dragons in the world, he lied about slaying them to protect the last masters of the true Firebending arts that draw its power from life instead of the rage and hate that had infested the Fire Nation's people for three generations.

However, Iroh is also a seasoned fighter and general, a clever strategist, a master Firebender and an old man that has learned well the bitter lessons of the world. This wisdom has lead him to understand many things, including the fact that only the Avatar can defeat Ozai and restore the balance of the world and that Zuko would serve the Fire Nation and the world best as Fire Lord. He has mastered the penultimate technique of the Firebending arts, Lighteningbending. He is resourceful and patient in all things.

First Person (entry type):

Zuko is yelling at the crew again. He is unhappy that we have had to slow down due to the new currents we've entered pursuing the Avatar. His voice really carries when he's like this, I can hear him on the bridge and I'm sure the engine room can, too. The first mate is trying to explain to him that the delay will be temporary, only a week or so.

Ooh, that was a fireball going off. I hope he aimed it out to sea instead of the bow like last time. Zuko, regrettably, has his father's temper.

“Ahh, I think this is my game captain.” The white lotus tile pushed forward into its final position, cinching my victory. The captain, a good man and experienced sailor with a long list of achievements to his name (I often wondered who he had angered to be put on this ship) laughed amicably and began to collect his pieces.

“I never get how you turn the lotus into such a formidable piece, General.” Giving him a grin, I dropped my own round tiles into a tray under the board.

“The White Lotus requires time, patience and constant observation, Captain. It's strength is not in how powerful it is, but,” everyone winced as a loud explosion sounded from the deck, “is in how it can come back time and time again.”

Third Person:

Moving out of the Lower Circle took them less than two hours all together. The merchant who was backing the shop assured that their new home would be furnished for them, so there was no need to bring their ramshackle furniture. Their clothes, their personal possessions, and their savings disappeared into rucksacks in a few minutes. What consumed the other half hour was taking their food to the next neighborhood over to donate to a couple that looked after orphaned refugee children. The wife, her hair bound up and at least three children milling around her feet that couldn't be older than five, burst into tears at the sight of the simple bags of rice. Both Iroh and Zuko were bound up into hugs as she thanked them profusely.

The last hour was dedicated solely to losing that boy from the ferry and his friends.

Arriving at the (for the district) modest little house, they dropped their belongings at the door and explored the place. Zuko was testing his new bed when a shout from the kitchen had him sprinting down the hallway, breath drawn in and ready to firebend the daylights out of whoever...

“Uncle? Whats wrong!?”

Iroh was staring up at an open cabinet, hands lifted up as if in prayer.

“Zuko!” he spoke in a trembling voice, “Z-Zuko! They sent us samples! Samples!”

“Samples...”

“Of all the teas we'll have in stock! Look! There's even a tin of Blue Jasmine! That's a collector's item!” Iroh turned to hold out a single box with a blue flower on it, only to find his nephew was gone.
