Character Notes: History: As with all Inception characters, most of Cobb’s history is only hinted at, but there are a few things we can assume based on said hints. For instance, in the time before the events of the movie, Cobb was an architect, both in reality and in dreams. It’s mentioned he was very good at this, but was forced to stop due to interference from Mal, his wife. More on that in a minute. Cobb was married to a lovely woman named Mallorie (Mal for short), and they explored the dream world together, and went as deep as you can go into their shared subconscious, into what is referred to as Limbo.
They spent years there. A lifetime. They built their world several times over, and ruled over their lonely world. Okay that was overly poetic, but you get the idea. Eventually, Cobb began to crave reality, but Mal had forgotten what reality was. Cobb wanted to leave with her, so he planted the idea in her head that her world was not real, and the only escape was death, so that they would wake up in reality once more.
So they escaped. There was a train involved. But the idea had changed Mal, and she began to believe that the real world wasn’t real, and the only escape was death. Cobb tried to convince her otherwise, but the idea was too deeply implanted in her, and he couldn’t keep her from ultimately killing herself. Cobb, under suspicion of killing his own wife, was forced to flee the country, and take on illegal work: the extraction of thoughts from people’s dreams.
EVENTS OF THE MOVIE TAKE PLACE. I.E., failed extraction from Saito, Cobol getting SUPAH MAD, Saito hiring Cobb and Arthur to perform Inception, the formation of the Dream Team, and the ultimate success of Inception and Cobb’s being able to return to his children and finally letting Mal go.
Did he wake up? Was it all a dream? IDK IT’S A MYSTERY but I like to think he was awake at the end. That’s my opinion.
