Indeed, despite any conversation or plan he might have had with Treize in the past, Zechs had gone mad. At the end of the war, he became both the symbolic leader and commander of the White Fang, a radical military group representing many splinter cells within the colonies. As their leader, he called himself Millardo Peacecraft again. Convinced that pacifism would only be achieved if humanity would be permanently discouraged from warfare, Millardo planned to drop a large space battleship onto Earth, causing a nuclear winter and the death of billions. His madness and depression coincided with Trieze's plans to unite the Earth's governments to fight one last war to end wars, with similar reasonings as Millardo's.

Millardo had a change of heart at the last possible moment by the Gundam pilot Heero Yuy. Claiming that humanity needed "someone with a strong heart to emphasize with the people", Millardo destroyed the majority of the space battleship in what seemed to be a suicidal maneuver. Many assumed him to be dead. However, through methods and means unexplained, he survived the fatal explosion ...

This is where he enteres the community.

Future history - (For one year, he remained in hiding, to the extent that his last living friend - Noin - did not even know of his survival. Calling himself Zechs Marquise once again, he resurfaced during the Mariemeia incident, joining the Preventers and exhibiting none of his previous madness (though plenty of understandable remorse, remarking, "If they allow Mariemeia to do as she wishes, they'll end up giving birth to a second Millardo Peacecraft."). After performing excellently in battle, avoiding killing a single soldier in the fight, he practically exiled himself from Earth and the colonies, joining the Mars Terra Forming Project. Zechs now exhibits less of his former arrogance by far, and also seems more withdrawn than he had been. However, during the Mariemeia incident it was clear he strongly believed that humanity had both the willpower and the ability necessary to uphold a state of peace.)
