Character Notes:
History: Yoshitsune’s past is probably one of the best kept secrets in Air Gear as next to nothing is known of it and he dies without revealing so much as a shred of knowledge about his origins. What is known is that when the original eight Regalia were scattered, through some unknown means, Yoshitsune managed to get his hands on the Rumble Regalia, Ram Jet. Through other unknown measures he was able to form a Storm Rider tie-in known as Trident, an A-Class Storm Rider team in the Kansai region of Japan—though his base of operations is primarily in Kyoto. Trident gained a reputation for being the strongest team in Western Japan and some time before the introduction of Yoshitsune and Trident his team became a component of Genesis, the largest and strongest Storm Rider team in Air Treck history composed of many other teams. Upon entering into this powerful alliance, which was probably a strategic move on Yoshitsune’s behalf, he became known as the Rumble King and one of the five Kings of Genesis. When we’re first introduced to Yoshitsune he was playing Tetris and talking to Yasuyoshi Sano also known as Aeon Clock a Storm Rider and a one-time member of Behemoth. They were discussing Ikki and his future as King of the Wind Road and leader of Genesis. Yoshitsune was obviously disgusted by Ikki and his status, claiming that he was only made leader because Simca—who publically presided over Genesis—willed it. To Yoshitsune, Ikki was merely a “brat” who didn’t even possess the Wind Regalia and therefore had no business being a leader. Yoshitsune then set up a series of tests for Ikki including challenging Ikki to compete in the Devil’s 33, a dangerous type of Air Treck stunt that involves two storm riders jumping 33.3 meters off of a ramp. The reason it is so dangerous is because 33 of the riders team mates are also lying on the ground so the rider has to jump them all and there’s always the possibility that the rider could land on and potentially kill one of his teammates. The first time Ikki accepted the challenge against Yoshitsune, Agito (one of Ikki’s teammates) uses his Fang Regalia to unleash a fang and help propel Ikki all 33.3 meters and over Ringo. Enraged by the interference Yoshitsune absorbed the fang with his Rumble Regalia and turned it against Ikki. This caused Ikki to fall, but instead of landing on Ringo (who was laying at the 33.3 meter mark) he landed on and fractured his knee. After this Yoshitsune verbally flayed Ikki by telling him that it was a test of courage and determination and if he passed this test on his own Genesis would have had the confidence to follow him. Since Ikki relied on the help of another King he was unworthy of being the leader of Genesis. After Ikki apologized for his transgression and proved to Yoshitsune he understood, Yoshitsune forgave him instantly and told Ikki he could jump as many times as he wanted to. Once Ikki completed the Devil’s 33 successfully Yoshitsune showed up at his school a few days later to announce, reluctantly, that Trident would accept him as the new leader of Genesis. Even though he acknowledged this he still claimed that Ikki never beat him in Devil’s 33, because Yoshitsune never got the chance to jump. Of course Yoshitsune is ashamed of his acceptance because their leader is from an E-Class team while Trident is an A-Class team. Yoshitsune even went so far as to admit that this made him feel like “the king of shit.” So he took it upon himself to train team Ikki’s team, Kogarasumaru. The team refused to take his help so he dumped a bunch of stolen undergarments on them as a farewell gift and made a run for it for it leaving Ikki and Kogarasumaru at the mercy of their enraged female classmates. Eventually they did agree to Yoshitsune’s very harsh training.

Personality: Yoshitsune has a rather multifaceted personality, in some instances he can be a very easy-going, slightly egotistical trickster who is something of a geek. He has a love for Tetris, Ultraman and ninjas and has on one occasion dressed up as a ninja in order to “help” Ikki out. He’s friendly, more or less, but he tends to refer to people as he sees fit, particularly those he doesn’t respect and has been known to refer to Ikki and his friends as “brats.” He has no problem making the wrong assumptions about people or their motivations for his own amusement. Yoshitsune is also a markedly intelligent strategist, possessing the ability to extract information from people with ease by pretending to know what’s going on even if he hasn’t got a clue. He is not easily moved to anger, but when he does get upset about something or when he is serious about something he will remove his glasses. When he removes his glasses it’s usually a tell that he is about to verbally flay a person or physically displace the object of his ire. Yoshitsune is, however, quick to forgive under the right circumstances and tends not to take things too personally. Yoshitsune is motivated by his team, Trident; all of his calculated decisions are based on what is absolutely in the best interests of his team. To this end Yoshitsune can be quite ruthless, especially when it comes to his enemies. He was shown torturing a member of Sleeping Forest, threatening to burn his eyes out with his cigarette and even placing his victim in an Iron Maiden, though it remained open and it was never shown to actually be used on the member of Sleeping Forest. It was clear that Yoshitsune tortured him quite a bit, but in the end there was no lasting damage done to his victim. While his personality is over all amoral he is shown to possess a certain level of kindness as was noted after his death. In spite of the frustration he could inspire in his subordinates he was a well respected leader. He considered all of the 89 teams under his leadership and all 1,436 of the members part of his vast family.

Other: Yoshitsune has several quirks that separate him from many of the characters in Air Gear. First and most obvious is his love of Tetris! He is a Tetris master and when he is in his Tetris zone he requires no sustenance or company. Yoshitsune’s geeky fanboyishness doesn’t stop there, he’s also been known to dress up and “act like” a ninja. And finally Yoshitsune is the Happosai of the Air Gear world when it comes to his expertise at stealing panties and bras, something he has a talent for. It’s also mentioned in passing that Yoshitsune is a fan of Ultraman.

King: as mentioned in Yoshitsune’s history he is one of the five Kings of Genesis, more specifically known as the “Rumble King.” In the world of Air Trecks there are many different roads, but of those roads eight of them are superior and the masters of the roads are known as Kings. Kings are the strongest and most sophisticated Storm Riders and they posses their own Regalia as a symbol of their strength. Yoshitsune’s road is the Over Road.

Regalia: As a King, Yoshitsune posses what is called a Regalia which is an incredibly powerful Air Treck part. Yoshitsune’s Regalia is the Rumble Regalia: Ram Jet. Regalia are also designed to work in conjunction with the King’s Road; in this case the Rumble Regalia was made for the Over Road

Air Trecks: They take the shape of inline skates, highly advanced and customizable skates that allows the user to “fly” and perform dangerous tricks that would otherwise be impossible on a normal pair of skates. Each Air Treck is installed with a program called READ designed so that riders can access information about other rides via their cell phones.

Storm Riders: Storm Riders, or commonly Riders, are simply Air Treck users. Storm riders come in 6 classes: F-class (for beginners), E-class, D-class, C-class, B-class and A-class. Yoshitsune is an A-class Rider. The majority of riders become part of a team and some of those teams enter Parts Wars.

Parts Wars: These are battles between Storm Riders and/or their teams. The spoils of these battles can be parts or territory. Teams can also take part in a Parts War in order to increase their class. In a Parts War teams usually bet their team Emblem. When a team loses their Emblem the team is normally dissolved, though it’s possible to win the Emblem back.

Trident: Yoshitsune is the leader of Trident which is composed of three members, his second in command Benkei and the third member Hatakeyama. Hatakeyama is actually a computer that Yoshitsune modified. The computer is hooked up to a forum that collects a consensus from all of those who are under Trident’s sphere of influence. Apart from the three members of Trident, trident is made up of 89 other teams under Yoshitsune’s lead. The members of Trident, which includes the 1436 unnamed members under Yoshitsune’s rule, refer to themselves as the samurai of West Japan.

Genesis: Genesis is a team that was founded by Nike and is unofficially led by Simca the Swallow. It is a massive team and is noted to be the strongest Storm Rider team in the history of Air Trecks. Trident and the 89 teams in the Kansai area serve under Genesis with Yoshitsune as one of the Kings.

Well, here I am…sittin’ all sweet and innocent—[a skeptical snort can be heard in the background]—what? Are you tryin’ to imply I’m not totally sweet and innocent?

N-no…you’re really…er…sweet and innocent!

I~ thought so [the young man grins wolfishly at the camera] now where was I? Ah right…sweet and innocent…so this sweet and innocent me is goin’ on his fifth hour—you know when it comes to this sort of thing [waves his hand at the computer] I can go for days. So here I am ready to knock down this great big wall that I had built so strategically…you should have seen it, it was masterpiece! Well I was ready to knock it down when a small duck randomly popped up on my screen and stole my high score…

Duck, boss?

You know [starts flapping his arms like wings] waterfowl…part of the Anatidae family…broad, flat bills, short legs; webbed feet…they go gaagaa! If you can’t keep up with the conversation then get the hell out.

Er…okay…so what do you suggest we do about the duck?

Open season? We don’t have any guns just lyin’ around though, do we? So your mission, should you choose too accept it…and of course you will because you don’t have a choice…is to go and find me a gun so we can play Duck Hunt...such nostalgia. I’m sure you can easily snatch one off of those Wind G-Men officers.

Are you kidding?

[Turns his head in the direction of the voice] Nope, not kidding. Gun. Go. And don’t you dare go shamin’ the Samurai of Western Japan!

Third Person: Yoshitsune had heard of Simca’s new decree, but he couldn’t believe it, in fact he was almost certain that this had to be some kind of shitty prank. Unfortunately it wasn’t, some third rate brat, a neophyte in the world of Storm Riders was to be the leader of all of Genesis? Some thumb-sucking little snot rag, who wasn’t a King, didn’t even possess a Regalia, and as far as he was concerned the little crumb muncher didn’t have much talent. Oh, he’d seen the boy in action and as far as he was concerned this Ikki, this rising star of the A-T world, was just a little too big for his britches. Yoshitsune would be having none of it, not the proud and brilliant leader of Trident. He would serve under no brat unworthy of his allegiance! A weak leader with no talent and exaggerated confidence could only inspire contempt and anxiety among his followers. Yoshitsune couldn’t have contempt and anxiety amongst his own followers even if he could comprehend the source of it. Looking up to a talentless leader would only result in his own followers looking down on him, this certainly wouldn’t do. It was in the best interest of Trident that the leader of Genesis could be someone worth acknowledging and this little runt was not. Eventually he would cross paths with the boy especially if he was so close to Simca that she saw fit to hand Genesis over to him. That day wouldn’t be too far off and when it did come, that brat had better watch his candy-ass because Yoshitsune would be ready for him. It would certainly be a debut that their new leader would not soon forget; he would definitely show Ikki the pride of Kansai!
