Character: Owen Harper Fandom:Torchwood Character Notes:
History: Owen was born on Valentine's day in 1980. His mother and him were never very close (the nicest thing she ever did for him was pack his lunch one day, and she didn't particularly like her son much). Not much is known about his father. By his early twenties, Owen had made himself a nice little career as a doctor, and was engaged to the love of his pre-Torchwood life, Katie Russell. Unfortunately, Katie had what doctors considered to be early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Owen attempted everything to help Katie, believing the other doctors to basically be wrong, as she was insanely young to have Alzheimer's; after countless tests, a brain scan seemed to indicate that she had a brain tumor.
During what was supposed to be a relatively normal surgery, however, that brain tumor was revealed to be an alien parasite. At this moment, Jack Harkness appeared, rushing in to try and save the day - unfortunately for Jack and Owen, the parasite killed the surgical team and Katie once it had been revealed. After trying to deal with the death of his fiancé, Owen was approached by Jack for the second time; this time, Jack came with an offer for him to join Torchwood.
After joining Torchwood, Owen led the classic one-man-wolfpack life of sex, booze and being a medic in a secret government agency. Owen seemed to get along pretty well with the female members of the crew - meaning, he had an affair with Suzie, later Gwen, and Toshiko always had a thing for him. He spent the first part of his life with Torchwood flirting with women, patching up his workmates whenever they got themselves shot or otherwise hurt, and making disparaging remarks whenever he felt like it.
Then came Diane Holmes, a woman who came through the Rift from the 1950's. Owen and Diane became involved during the short time she was in Cardiff; this was probably the first serious relationship Owen had been in since Katie. However, Diane left, unable to stay in one place for long, flying off in hopes of finding an opening in the Rift. Owen was left devastated. He spent most of his time sulking, getting into fights, and eventually his anger and remorse led him to a "Fight Club" styled underground group, where he was put into a cage with a Weevil. Instead of letting out his aggression on the alien, he simply stared it down, without fear. After that, it seemed as though Owen had come back to himself a bit, though he would swear off one-night stands. (Theoretically.) However, when Bilis Manger and Abaddon used the image of Diane in an attempt to convince Owen to open the Rift, he immediately went for it. His mutiny against Jack culminated in the rest of the team siding with him; when Jack tried to regain control, Owen shot him. Of course, that only delayed Jack from gaining control again, once the Rift was open. He was summarily fired from his post. (It didn't last long.)
After dealing with Abaddon, Owen and the rest of the team dealt with the Rift while Jack was dealing with the end of the world and all that heroic stuff. He continued to be a very good doctor (well, a brilliant doctor, but those are his words, not mine), teaming up with Martha Jones during an investigation of a pharmaceutical company that was killing people. Unfortunately, this team up resulted in Owen getting shot and killed as he attempted to reason with the director. Jack, of course, attempted to bring him back with a resurrection gauntlet so that everyone could say their goodbyes; this only served to bring Owen back permanently as a dead man. And, you know. A host to a personification of Death itself. After battling off Death, however, Owen didn't go back to being dead; he pretty much stayed exactly as he had been. Twenty-seven forever. Except he couldn't eat, sleep, drink or have sex, so there were no creature comforts to help him cope with the whole "undead" thing. He was temporarily relieved of duty until he managed to come to terms with his new mode of existence, and he actually managed that pretty well - up until Jack's brother Gray appeared. After Gray and John Heart's explosions triggered the beginnings of a nuclear meltdown, Owen attempted to shut down, or at least contain, the potential nuclear disaster. Unfortunately, he was sealed into the room where said nuclear meltdown was to take place in. Owen died talking to Toshiko, lamenting the fact that they never got to go on that date of theirs. This time, he was gone for good.
Personality: Owen is a sarcastic, moody kind of guy. He's quick to tell you exactly what he thinks about pretty much anything, and if you're being a moron, he will let you know very bluntly just how big a dumbass you're being. He's decidedly witty, and he has a rather dark sense of humor. Owen is probably better at pissing people off than anyone else in Torchwood, and he tends to sulk and alienate people when he's feeling depressed or hopeless. He has a great deal of trouble talking about his feelings, too, but then again, what guy doesn't? Despite being sarcastic, gruff and moody, however, Owen really does have a "softer" side - he became a doctor to help people, and he will put aside his issues to deal with any medical emergencies that may arise. He has a strong sense of remorse, and he has been known to blame himself for things that he could have prevented. He also doesn't give up easily; he'll see everything through until the bitter end. ...Actually, that fact makes him pretty good at picking up ladies, whether it's on his own or by use of alien technology, and he's considered a bit of a womanizer. Despite that, however, when Owen falls in love, he falls hard.
Other: I'll be taking Owen from after Diane's departure in "Out of Time" but before he battles the Weevil in "Combat". This means he'll be near the end of series 1, before he dies for the first time.
First Person (entry type): Dear diary: 1. My birthday is a cosmic joke. 2. My job sucks. 3. The woman I love left me in an aeroplane in order to go somewhere new. Without me. Even though that's not how the stupid damned rift works.
These journal type things, they're more Ianto's thing, aren't they? But I get the idea behind it. I know that writing down your thoughts and emotions is supposed to help you organize yourself. Some shit like that. I don't need to organize anything; I don't need to explore my feelings or work out how I'm going to deal with them. I don't need to make sense of it all. I just need to go out, get sloppy drunk, and... Hell.
Think I'll complete my night by staying in, eating a pint of ice cream and watching Sixteen Candles, or something. After all, I'm already acting like enough of a woman. Might as well go full tilt.
Third Person: The man on the autopsy table had, quite literally, gotten the raw end of the deal here. The Weevil that had attacked him, had shredded his face and torn at his throat, was currently being housed in the cells in the lower levels of Torchwood, Jack watching it as if divining some kind of meaning from its sorry existence; meanwhile, this poor sod was stone dead and stuck with only Owen for company. Very raw end, if he said so himself.
It wasn't fair, really, Owen thought as he went through the motions of the autopsy, partly for the sake of the report but mostly for practice. This guy, marked "Mitchell Baker" on the report, hadn't done anything really wrong. He'd been piss drunk, that was clear from the toxicology reports, had an outbreak of herpes and his wallet was mostly empty, but none of that meant he deserved to get mauled by a Weevil. Christ, half of his nights out ended up with two of those three things happening to him, and he was pretty sure he deserved the mauling more than any Baker.
It was even less fair, he lamented, that they hadn't kept up with the Weevil when they'd been tracking it, because if they had, maybe Mr. Baker here wouldn't be quite so dead. It was a distinct possibility, one that must've shown on his face because Jack had taken one look at him and said, "This is just something that happens." Like he should get over it. Easy for Jack to say. But, it was true, he guessed. Nothing to be done. Win some, lose some. Some of them, you caught the Weevil before it did any damage; sometimes you didn't. Sometimes, you'd catch the alien tumor before it killed its host; sometimes you didn't.
Owen wondered at how nonchalant he was being, and then realized that he'd done the entire autopsy without even paying attention. He was getting too used to dealing with the sometimes you didn't part of this job, and he wasn’t sure he liked it.
