- Gale lived in the Seam of District Twelve with his mother Hazelle, two younger brothers Rory and Vick , and his baby sister Posy. His father was killed in a mine explosion, the same one that killed Katniss’ father. Gale works in the mines for twelve hours a day in Catching Fire as he is now too old to participate in the Hunger Games.
- Gale first met Katniss at the ceremony following their fathers’ deaths and like her, was awarded the Medal of Valour for being the eldest child in the remaining family. They later met in the woods when he was fourteen after he found her inspecting one of his snares. She said her name so quietly that he thought she said ‘Catnip’ and the nickname has stuck ever since. Though it took them a long time to become friends, Gale became her confidant and hunting partner and the two helped each other out with their talents – Gale’s traps and snares and Katniss’ proficiency with the bow.
- The two of them spend much of their time out in the woods just outside District Twelve, illegally trespassing and poaching from them if only to feed their starving families. Before he begins work in the mines, Gale has to make money through trading his kills at the Hob and signing up for tesserae. This means his name would be entered multiple times into the reaping in exchange for grain and oil, the reaping being the event that takes place before the Hunger Games to pick out tributes – those who will compete in the Games. Obviously the more times his name is entered, the higher the chance he will be chosen.
- Gale loathes the Capitol and loves to complain about them. He even attempts to get Katniss to run away with him claiming he would like to start a family if he didn’t live in the Seam.
- Many people in the District refer to Gale and his family as Katniss’ cousins, Katniss herself saying he could be her brother, because they look so much alike, even though they aren’t related. The fact they were cousins was a story fabricated by the Capitol since Gale was Katniss’ closest friend and they didn’t want Peeta to appear to have any competition. It’s said that when interviewers are sent out, the first person they find is usually Gale, and since many people in the Seam share similar features someone got the idea to call Gale Katniss’ cousin.
- Though Katniss thinks of Gale as her best friend, Gale claims to love Katniss, even moving to kiss her once she returns from her ordeal after the Hunger Games. Though he tells her that he loves her, she only manages an ‘I know’, which seems to hurt him. He forms a grudge against Peeta, a boy she met through the Games (and through events prior to that briefly), after seeing the two kiss and profess their love, even form an engagement. Though she claims it’s just for show, Gale is obviously hurt by this. This leaves Katniss confused and Gale becomes distant towards her, unsure of her relationship with the boy and with himself. It’s later revealed that she does in fact love Peeta and eventually Gale manages to push through his grudge, claiming that Peeta is a hard person to hate. He does become jealous of the two however, but understands this is selfish and tries his best to put his feelings to one side, even conversing with Peeta almost like a friend during a later mission.
- He is caught in the second book by a Peacemaker named Thread who finds him with a wild turkey he had poached in the woods. He suffers forty lashes with a whip before Katniss throws herself in front of him and things come to an end. She takes the unconscious Gale to her mother and sister and he eventually heals. A new electric fence is put up around the District to prevent any more trespassing and by the end of the second book District Twelve has been destroyed by bombs from the Capitol. Gale is able to save many of the citizens, including Katniss’ mother and sister though he sustains injuries himself.
- At the beginning of the third book, Gale works as a soldier in District Thirteen before eventually moving into District Two and claiming a new job there. He becomes a vital part of the rebellion and shows little mercy when it comes to sacrificing lives.
- His relationship with Katniss is destroyed during events in the third book after her sister Prim is killed by a firebomb made by Gale. Though he didn’t order the bombs to hit Prim’s location, Katniss can’t look at Gale anymore without associating him with Prim’s death.
Out in his favoured environment of the woodland Gale can be quite a tease and enjoys friendly banter with Katniss. However as events progress it is shown that he can be quick to anger and becomes jealous rather easily as far as Katniss as concerned. He does his best to try and keep this in check though and quite often resorts to abstaining from talking to his friend if he feels they will get into a fight (though even that isn’t enough sometimes).
Gale is rebellious at heart, brave and a good fighter. He has no trouble throwing himself into the rebellion that arises to fight against the Capitol as he despises them, often ranting about them when he knows they can’t hear. By the third book however he is fighting for his cause and admits that he would gladly sacrifice himself for it, for Katniss and their families. He doesn’t seem to hold much value on his life as long as it is put to good use. Despite Katniss’ protests he has no trouble condemning the Capitol’s citizens to death if it means Panem may be liberated for the future. He is also very committed to the cause, rather staying to fight than run away with Katniss. Discussions with Katniss at the beginning of the series hint that he would one day like to have a family of his own if peace ever fell over Panem; if his children would have a bright future. Gale is a skilled hunter and his speciality lies in making snares and traps. He maintains a certain respect for the animals he kills and often speaks calmly to them before he ends their lives.
His fatal flaw is his anger towards the Capitol. He most definitely holds a grudge against them, one that he can’t let go. It becomes something of an obsession and is something that ultimately pulls him and Katniss apart as he can’t compete with Peeta’s kindness and innocence.
The hunter is known for his good looks and has claimed to kiss several girls in the past.
[A sigh. Someone’s walking through the woods, but quietly. The tread of a skilled hunter. Even his words are hushed. .]
The woods aren’t the same without my Katniss. Almost forgot what it was like to hunt alone. And while I’m out here snapping up rabbits she’s... she’s what? Risking her life to entertain those freaks at the Capitol? No, not even that. Only one victor ever comes out of those Games. They might as well just be condemning her to a slow torturous death.
What am I saying? If anyone can get out of those games, she can. Guess I should be thankful Peeta even feels something for her. I know he’ll look out for her and in the end, she’ll be the one to survive.
Great Gale, is this what it’s come down to? Ranting to yourself? Nobody else to listen to you, huh? Well, even if she can’t hear me, can’t even see me, I hope she knows how much I miss those swift arrows of hers.
Catnip, I’m waiting for you.
Third Person:
Words could not really describe how Gale was feeling right now. It was a long time ago since he realised he had feelings for Katniss. A long time ago since he had realised that he minded when someone else gave her all the affection and when she gave them her attention. Ever since she’d left for the Games, he had felt like a part of him had been torn away. It was the Capitol’s fault of course, and he would never forgive them for that.
But now there was something else to compete with... A fiery, hateful feeling that he realised was jealousy. Jealousy at every image that was shown of her and this Peeta holding hands, murmuring sweet nothing’s and kissing... kissing on the lips. Numerous times. Gale knew Katniss had a reason for this... for why she had to show so much affection in public and why she never showed anything like it around him. He knew Katniss and this wasn’t usual for her. But then why did he feel like being so selfish? Just scooping her up and taking her away? Perhaps envy was a better word to use.
Whatever the reason, it was something he would just have to deal with while she was gone. And when she returned, he knew he would get answers. He would never push Katniss into a relationship she was unhappy with. It was her decision and her decision alone. If she really wanted Peeta and not him, well, he’d just have to live with that.
The first thing he needed was distraction, and it wasn’t hard to find that in District Twelve. Not when he had two hungry families to feed and take care of now. So despite his drifting thoughts he hunted every Sunday as they had before. Ate the blackberries they had found prior to the games. Practiced his shooting, even though he knew he would never be quite as good as Katniss.
And all the while, he just hoped and prayed that the girl that haunted him was still alive.
