Dexter Morgan 3/4

Personality: Dexter is highly organized, and stresses neatness in all aspects of his life. He's a classic sociopath, but surprisingly loyal. His kills are extremely methodical and painstakingly premeditated. He never does anything without more thought than most people put into their whole lives. He's very attached to the way his life is now, happiness with a side of death - and is determined to keep it through any means necessary. He describes in the Pilot how he fakes his human interactions, supposing that most people do the same. But the fact that he fakes all of his interaction, even the more intimate, is what separates him out.

In the first episode he says, "Deb is nice. If I could have feelings for a person, they would probably be for her." His connection with his sister is evergrowing, even in the current season. But she still doesn't know that he's a killer or that her own father taught him how to hide it. At the precinct, he's a pretty likable guy. He brings donuts, he cracks jokes, and is just generally a guy who gets along with everyone even when he's a bit weird (he is the blood guy after all). While inside he claims to feel nothing at all, he puts on a very charming and cheerful persona that people instantly connect to. The Lieutenant LaGuerta even has a crush on him for some time before he gets serious with Rita.

The only person who seems unconvinced, is Sergeant Doakes. He is instantly creeped out by Dexter and lets him know that at every turn - always trying to catch him off guard. Doakes ultimately dies at the hands of Dexter's psycho lover, Lila Tournay, and his problems are over for a while. No one suspects or even raises an eyebrow at Dexter for a long time after that. And even when Rita dies, all but Joey Quinn (the newest addition) are convinced beyond all shadow of a doubt that Dexter could never have hurt her, or anyone else. They all consider Dexter family. He comes to accept that, and sort of reciprocate.

His relationship with Rita and the kids is perhaps the most perplexing. And is still evolving, even after Rita's death. He does genuinely care about Astor, Cody, and Harrison. And in fact, loves them. And admits to himself he loved Rita too. Harry, who comes to him in the form of hallucination on a regular basis, calls the children Dexter's "salvation."
Other: There are only three people Dexter has ever killed that were not killers themselves. One was a serial pedophile he killed to protect Astor and Cody, two was an innocent man Dexter had killed in an extremely rare and sloppy moment (he hadn't done his research all the way through), and three was a man he killed out of rage just after Rita's death. A sloppy, angry kill - this is a new precedent for Dexter and a huge milestone for his character.

Also, random: "Harry's Code" may be an allusion for "Hammurabi's Code" ; "an eye for an eye" as Dexter only does bad things to bad people.
