Character Notes:
History:SO once upon at time there was a very small teenager named Simon. Simon was shy, awkward and a typical teenager. He had no friends, but a pet molepig (Boota) and this guy who kind of bothered him and made him call him Aniki a lot and made him do all sorts of things that got him into trouble. Simon worked all day, the same thing, day after day, digging tunnels to expand the underground village he lived for—Jiiha. Girls called him dirty and smelly. Boys avoided him because he was so small. Simon lived a very lonely existence, being orphaned at the age of seven in a cave-in. Like the other orphans in Jiiha, Simon was kept under the care of the village “chief,” who was a rat bastard who beat up on them when they didn't listen to him and forced them to work digging tunnels or they wouldn't be allowed to eat. Anyone who spoke against him ended up imprisoned.

Simon was not very fond of this way of life and longed for a life away from “day after day.” Unfortunately for him, Kamina was willing to give him that life—by means of trying to get to the surface. Now, you have to understand, for a thousand years, no one from Jiiha had ever seen the surface. Just like Santa Claus, Zeus and Pluto being a planet, it had faded into merely myth. People called Kamina crazy and stupid. No one believed in him. Except, maybe, for Simon.

You see, Simon genuinely liked Kamina. Maybe he had a pull toward the adrenaline Kamina always provided, or maybe it was just the fact that someone treated him like family, or maybe it was simply that someone didn't point and laugh at him whenever he came near, but Simon always did his best when the older boy was involved.

And that was how he always played a pivotal part in Kamina's “reach-the-surface” plots. And why, on the day the story of Gurren Lagann starts, it was how Simon became the one he shared the surface with.

Part 1 of 3: Pre-Episode 8

As I said, Simon was the type of kid to get dragged into Kamina's hair brained schemes very often, be they digging a tunnel to the surface or riding a pack of molepigs through the roof. Shy and easily won over by simply treating him like a human being (or maybe just too scared to say no), he often found himself facing his fears head on in these little plots.

And he always found himself lined up with the rest of Kamina's gang, the Gurren-dan, when punishment was doled out. But here's a good time to make a big point about Simon's personality: he was loyal until the end. Despite everyone else abandoning Kamina to face his fate, simply for a meal, Simon stood by his side. This loyalty would develop into fierceness and eventually a strength that could not be overcome. His loyalty is immediately tested by the occurrence of one of his greatest fears: an earthquake.

As I mentioned before, when Simon was seven his parents died in a cave-in. One caused by an earthquake. Pay attention to this, you will be tested (it comes up again in a few paragraphs). Not only did they die, but he got to watch them be buried alive. Traumatically enough, they died reaching out for him. So earthquakes? Are a huge deal to the PTSD'd little digger.

He begs Kamina to run for shelter, but Kamina refuses to move, or give in. Upon realizing why Simon is so afraid (re: last paragraph), he brings Simon to him in an awesome, moving moment of brotherly love. /determined face. When the quakes stop, Kamina gives a speech saying that on the surface, they don't have to fear cave-ins, and is promptly thrown in prison.

Simon digs that night, and discovers a small robot—later known as Lagann. Lagann reacts to a small drill he dug up earlier in the episode, and, of course, Simon decideds, HEY. LET'S GO SHOW KAMINA.

So, after digging his way into Kamina's cell, he tries to lead him out, only to be stopped by the village chief and repremanded for A) breaking Kamina out of prison and B) digging tunnels without permission to look for treasure.

And then.

The a giant robot crashes through the ceiling.

Assisted by a fiery red head from the surface (Yoko), Simon and Kamina find their way to Simon's previously-discovered robot and kick the shit out of the other giant robot, all of which are called “ganmen” from here forward.

Kamina shouts farewell to the village, and the boys, Boota and Yoko crash through the no longer existent ceiling and to a gorgeous sunset. Flying through the air, Simon admires his first glance of sunlight, of the surface, the sky, the moon and the desert before him. Awed by the simple existence of it all, he forgets his fears.

And then Lagann plummets back to Earth. And directly into a fight with two other ganmen.

WHICH THEY WIN AND VERY LITTLE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT HAPPENS FOR A FEW EPISODES. They start to live on the surface, acquire a sassy gay friend (Leeron), make some allies of Littner Village (who live on the surface because their underground village was destroyed by a gas leak from the ammunition storage), Kamina decides to take over a ganmen, dubs it Gurren, and Simon stays his scared as anything, shy, tiny self. They find out the ganmen are piloted by beastmen—human animal hybrids, and then the beastmen come back to take Gurren back.

Kamina discovers that he can't take on the beastmen without Simon's help, but is stubborn about Simon piloting Lagann. He goes into battle alone, telling Yoko that he believes, no, he knows that Simon will join him.

And then the beastmen show up, jumping around on the ground... and causing violent earthquakes. He, remember what I said about his parents? Oh yeah, guess what cause the cave in that killed them.. After a flashback scene, complete terror for a few moments and Yoko yelling at him to get the fuck out there, Kamina needs you, Simon enters the fray. Partially spurred on by revenge for his parents death, Simon's confidence once again spirals (haha, I made a funny) into what Kamina calls “manly spirit.”

Kamina uses a super cool awesome move to endcat the beastmen. All is good. For like a whole day.

The trio of heroes goes to get food and water for the village, when Kamina guns down a raccoon bird. Except he wasn't the only one who shot it. A beastmen by the name of Viral (who becomes the rival character for the rest of the series) also shot the raccoon bird and a brawl between Kamina and Viral happens before Simon quite literally crashes into it, turning it into a giant robot battle. Warning: these happen a lot in TTGL.

They beat Viral for the day, but he vows to come back in the morning, revealing an interesting plot point: Beastmen must sleep at night or they will die. SO THE NEXT MORNING HE COMES BACK, with his ganmen that has two faces. And Kamina's all FUCK THIS SHIT, I CAN HAVE TWO FACES, TOO.

And promptly. Smashes Lagann into the top of Gurren.

Image

Well. That was interesting. I think Simon's face at the end of that epic chain explains it all. Somehow, though, they actually connect to each other and they beat the crap out of Viral. And steal his helmet. But stealing is okay in Gurren Lagann, so long as you paint whatever you've stolen cool colors. Viral becomes Rival-san.

Leeron discovers a return point in Gurren's system while fixing it up. Kamina, Simon and Leeron decide to go track it down in hopes of defeating the beastman army. Yoko joins them.

Episode four happens. Every fan ever wants to kill him/herself. Nothing interesting happens except we discover that Simon and Kamina get retardedly weak when hungry. And Kittan and his sisters—the Black Siblings—are introduced.

Episode five brings the travelers to an underground village called Adai: Short on food and water, the village is only able to house a certain amount of people. When triplets are born, two of the villagers must be cast out. The village also worships a fallen ganmen, which they call “face gods.” While there, the group picks up three children: Gimmy and Darry, orphans cast out when the village becomes overcrowded, and Rossiu, only a year or so younger than Simon—who idolizes him. Simon's personality remains relatively static, though he becomes more confident little by little.

(Between these two episodes is the DS released OVA, which basically just shows how dedicated Simon is to keeping things clean and in good working order, whereas Kamina just lazes around.)

Episode six was actually censored on Japanese TV. The group finds themselves in a hotspring, joined by the Black Siblings. When the group goes to a bath, divided by the sexes, Simon and Kamina find themselves alone listening to the three Bachika sisters and Yoko discussing the pros and cons of each of the boys.

Here, Simon develops at terrible, terrible flaw: A crush on Yoko. He overhears her complimenting him, saying that he'll grow up to be a good man, and Simon... unfortunately falls in love.

The group is then attacked by the hostess of the hotspring and her employees, who are actually all beastmen (HOLY SHIT WHEN DID BEASTMEN LEARN TO TRANSFORM?!). They hold the girls hostage and Kamina nearly gives up in order to see them naked. Moron.

Other crack stuff happens. They end up all naked in the middle of the desert and are attacked by Viral who's nice enough to let them get dressed.

In episode seven, they learn of the existence of the beastman army, and the mobile fortress, the Dai-Gunzan, piloted by Thymilph, one of the Four Generals. Suddenly joined by a group of rebels that decided to copy Kamina's idea and steal some ganmen, themselves, Kamina devises a plan.

While everyone else basically causes a distraction, Simon's to gattai with the Dai-Gunzan and take control. Simon isn't so sure of this plan, and continues to become infatuated with Yoko. The night before the battle, he walks in on Yoko and Kamina kissing...

And this crushes his tiny soul like a mousetrap crushes a mouse's neck. He runs, saying over and over again that it's none of his business, but with a broken heart, what is he to do? Well, tomorrow's the battle no matter what.

All goes according to plan until Simon gattais with the fortress. He can't summon the will to connect with it, however. Kamina, realizing that Simon's in danger, throws himself to the Dai-Gunzan and punches Simon in the face in a display of brotherly love the likes of which no one has ever seen before. After a confidence-boosting speech, and Simon coming to control the Dai-Ganzan, Kamina returns to Gurren, smiles.

And is immediately stabbed through the goddamn chest.

The Dai-Gurren-dan (the rag tag group of ganmen thieves mentioned before) is suddenly crushed. Kamina, the man who started it all, the seventeen year old boy who never gave up... dead!?

Simon cracks. Completely. Fucking. Loses it. Batshit insane (http://randomc.net/image/Gurren%20Lagann/Gurren%20Lagann%20-%2008%20-%20Large%2028.jpg). Simon's incredible spiral energy shows itself here--he makes a fucking volcano explode (http://randomc.net/image/Gurren%20Lagann/Gurren%20Lagann%20-%2008%20-%20Large%2029.jpg). Boom. And, broken-soul'd (since broken-hearted doesn't cover this), Simon heads straight for the center of it, ignoring the calls of his comrades.

Kamina hears everyone in the Dai-Gurren-dan freaking out and basically comes back to fucking life (a fan theory is that he was actually dead before this), figuratively pulls Simon back to his feet, and kicks the beastmen's asses alongside Simon.

short part is short

[identity profile] indemnifies.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
... And, finally, as they're celebrating, Kamina whispers "later, buddy," and passes on.

The scene closes with shots of the Dai-Gurren-dan, especially Simon and Yoko mourning. Rain pours on the scene.

"Real men desire to live loyally without inhibitions.

Being loved by comrades and striving for freedom.

And to finally go down fighting."

That day, we lost something irreplaceable.

Part 2 of 3: Post-Kamina, Pre-Great Revival

A week has passed. Simon has become the main character. The rain has not lightened up. Simon has become bitter and angry, lashing out at his friends for simple things. But who can blame him? More than one person in the Dai-Gurren-dan has blamed him for Kamina's death. He blames himself for Kamina's death. Simon's overwhelming shyness has been overcome by a rash, uncaring attitude. "I need to fight for Aniki, too," he explains. "Since it's my fault he's not here anymore." He pushes himself past his limits, and brutally murders beastmen, saying that it's only right because they're what killed Kamina. He lashes out at Rossiu. "Where was your god when Aniki died?" he mocks. "Oh, that's right, your gods are the ones who killed him."

Simon becomes sort of a huge douche. Losing control of his spiral energy, he's no longer able to control Lagann, who goes fucking berserk, detaches itself from Gurren (now piloted by Rossiu), and throws itself into a canyon. With Simon still inside.

The ganmen rolls Simon out in a graveyard of boxes. He notices one slide in just as he lands there, and sees a spot for his core drill... which he promptly inserts. The box opens to reveal a Mary-Sue (http://www.gurren-lagann.net/chara/images/nia.gif).

Hail and well met, good sir!

As Simon views the girl, Nia, who seems to have absolutely no idea what the hell anything is (Ah! This is rain?), the clouds part. He seems to lose his hard, depressed, doesn't-give-a-shit shell before her, offering her his shoes, answering her questions. And for the first time since Kamina's death, it seems as if Simon can be redeemed.

But then, Nia points behind Simon and asks "What is that?" And, well, it's a ganmen. Simon pulls her along, away from the ganmen, to Lagann, which he can't get to start. He picks up his normal drill from the bot, and tells Nia to run. That he won't watch anyone else die.

Nia takes his hand, and asks him if he wishes to die. She can tell he's scared, and says that he should run as well. The pair are saved from the ganmen by Kittan and returned to the Dai-Ganzan, renamed the Dai-Gurren.

[identity profile] indemnifies.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Where Nia takes center stage. Simon's pushed, once more into the background and returns to the hangar and Lagann to be an emo whore bitch. When the Dai-Gurren is attacked, Simon believes himself useless and simply. Sits there. Meanwhile, the attacker--another of the four generals, Adiane, causes Nia to reveal that she's a princess. The princess of the Helix King, who just so happens to be the big bad of the show, and the commander of the beastmen. Oh. Shit.

But that gets them out of one battle. Lagann ends up in a trash heap, the Dan sends Simon to question Nia, there are moments where Simon recollects his love of Kamina and what happened in a cave in*, stuff happens, next morning comes, Adiane attacks again saying that the king wants nothing to do with Nia, and that he threw her away. This gets Simon really angry. He rushes to save her, but the rest of the Dan gets their first, since Lagann is broken.

He returns to being emo. Despite this, Nia comes to his room for dinner to thank him and to say that she knows that Simon was the first one to come running for her. This just drives the stake of depression into Simon's heart.

Later, once more, the Dai-Gurren-dan is attacked by a third general: Guame. Guame however, manages to take the Dan in a trick and imprison all of them underground. He keeps Nia on the surface and says that he'll spare her if she trains women to become wives of the king.

Meanwhile, the Dan is in a large pit, trying to dig their way out at all costs. Hands, feet, teeth, whatever they can use is useless! Simon, however, sits at a small part of the wall, and using his core drill, despite handcuffs and injuries, begins to patiently dig at the soil, little by little creating a hole. The Dan stops, watching him, amazed. Yoko recalls a story Kamina told her of Simon's bravery and unfailing loyalty in a cave-in**. Simon, as he digs through the dirt, thinks of Nia and Kamina. He remembers Kamina's last speech to him. "Believe in you who believes in yourself!" He remembers Nia's constant faith in him. And suddenly, he pieces it all together. And he finally, finally, regains his will to live.

Lagann is summoned by that will.

Meanwhile again, Nia refuses Guame's offer, saying stubbornly that Simon will come to save her. Guame, pissed as shit by her disrespect of him, orders Simon to be the first of the Dai-Gurren-dan killed. BUT THEN SIMON BURSTS THROUGH THE FUCKING FLOOR AND IS ALL /RESCUES NIA. The two fly incredibly high into the air, but plummet back into a massive battle projected to all of the underground villages with access to the surface.

[identity profile] indemnifies.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Here, Simon finally not only understands what Kamina saw in him, but learns to believe in himself, to not fear losing and to only push forward. He learns that death is not a ceasing of someone important, but only a confinement to the hearts and backs of those who loved the person. Kamina is no longer bodily among them, but he is hardly gone. It is here that Simon chooses his name: Simon the Digger, that the Dai-Gurren-dan finally comes to respect him, and that his great revival of spirit takes place.

You're the man Kamina picked for the job, all right.

"I've put in the location of the capitol.

All we can do now is keep going straight."

*The Cave-In Story, Simon Version: Kamina, Simon and some Jiiha boys were trapped in a cave-in while trying to get to the surface. Simon was scared and his hands were shaking, but Kamina just kept encouraging him. Because of that, Simon was able to put his fear aside and dig them out of the mess. Without Kamina, Simon can do nothing.

**The Cave-In Story, Kamina Version: The boys were trapped in a cave-in while trying to get to the surface. Kamina was terrified, and certain they were all going to die, but hid it behind big words and actions. Simon, however, actually put his big words and encouragement into the digging force that saved them all. Without Simon, Kamina can do nothing.

Part 3 of 3: The Battle for Teppelin/Leading up to Seven-Years-Later
[Insert here a couple of episodes where the characters that develop are Yoko and Nia rather than Simon.]

One Month Later

The Dai-Gurren-dan finds itself short on supplies, full of injured fighters and barely able to keep going. Memebers urge Simon to hurry and finish this before they are completely wiped out. And then, they reach Teppelin City.

Hundreds of humans having stolen ganmen come forward, under the flag of the Dai-Gurren-dan, and stand to fight. They fight and defeat the last of the generals.

Nia and Simon travel directly to the Helix King.

Here, Simon learns of Spiral Energy, of force of will and of a prophecy that will bring about the end of humanity.

He battles the Helix King, who beats the everliving shit out of him. And eventually, he wins. The day is saved, at least for another seven years.

Teppelin is defeated, at the sacrifice of many life and the Dai-Gurren itself, and the Dai-Gurren-dan begins to rebuild. Simon falls further and further in love with Nia, but can never get Lordgenome's prophecy out of his mind.

[identity profile] indemnifies.livejournal.com 2010-10-11 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Personality: One of the first things you have to know about Simon, is that he never gives up on anything, and that his determination, when he feels like he's doing the right thing, knows no bounds. When people are depending on him, he always comes through. Even if the world is against him, Simon the Digger doesn't give up and he doesn't back down. When faced with opposition, he fights to the last breath to protect his friends and comrades.

Simon's got extreme moral obligations to himself—if he fails to do what he feels is right, it takes a heavy toll on him, whether it's visible or not. His biggest insecurity can lead to his greatest strength, though—after failure, Simon comes back with something to prove.

While loyal and generally kind, if prompted, mostly if he's depressed or afraid, Simon can be kind of an ass. This could mean reminding someone of something that they'd rather not be reminded of, or standing up against someone who he really shouldn't be standing up against. This is where he gets in trouble. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

On an unrelated note, going back a bit, Simon's childhood wasn't very stable, causing his terrible problem with security. When he was seven, he lost his parents in a cave in—he watched them crushed before his eyes, and could do nothing to help them. After that, he spent his time digging for the chief and raising himself. He had almost no friends, no one to rely on, except for Kamina—the biggest social outcast ever. Every time another cave-in would happen, Simon's life was shattered in a new way, be it through losing another member of the village or destroying his latest work on a tunnel system. The villagers of Jiha looked down on Simon as creepy, smelly and useless except for digging. This is part of the reason he's so unused to being complimented—it never happened, before. And it's probably the reason he's so nervous and embarrassed around Nia—he's never felt this way about anyone before (despite the brief stint of liking Yoko), and he doesn't know what to do about it.

That said, Simon feels with incredible power. When he's sad, he's heart-wrenchingly depressed, when he's happy he's at the top of the world. His anger is pure fury and his embarrassment is red-faced, make-self-tiny bashful. When he's scared, he's pushed to tears and when he's excited he's unstoppable. Simon is very pure about his feelings, too. There's no mixed messages. If Simon is angry with you, you know it. And if Simon loves you, there will never be a doubt in the world.

Simon has constantly been pushed into things he doesn't feel ready for by Kamina—starting with silly “break through the ceiling” plans, evolving to piloting Lagann, and eventually, being made leader of the Dai-Gurren-dan.

His uncertainty about these jobs lead him to believe that any and every problem occurring with his friends is his fault, despite the actual circumstances. Tying into his determination, Simon's personal values are part of this—his failure to do the right thing, no matter the reason—even if there was no chance of doing said thing—drives another nail into the board of uncertainty. It's honestly his biggest weakness, and he has problems recognizing it, thinking he's right to be uncertain, as he's does “so much wrong.”

That is part of what makes Simon a good leader, at least in the beginning. He's humble enough to check himself. He can admit what he's done wrong, and try to fix it. He cares about the people who depend on him with his whole heart, and their needs come before him. He's a wonderful balance of creativity, passion, logic, humility, trust and pride. He thinks around things in ways no one else does, and has the common sense to go to his friends if he can't figure something out. He will eventually grow into laziness, but that's a very sad part of the story DX.

The two sides of his personality—determination and uncertainty—are two very different qualities. I do not doubt that this is the reason Simon's so emotionally unstable. He doesn't often act like it, but Simon's just a kid, torn up inside by what's right and what's easy. He is this way long into his life... but he always chooses what he believes is right.

First Person (entry type): D-do these work? (http://community.livejournal.com/dramadramaduck/tag/simon%20the%20digger)

This is another example? (http://community.livejournal.com/hat_boxes/1915.html)

These are all from DDD? (http://galaxyfrisbee.livejournal.com/5924.html)

Third Person: (taken from app to r_29) Simon paced back and forth. This wasn't right, this wasn't right, this wasn't right. He'd never seen anything like this—grass and trees and … the only place he'd ever seen that was that hot spring he didn't want to remember that hot spring, that hot spring had been one of the worst experiences of his life until that point. And that hot spring was some of his last memories of Kamina— There was nothing reassuring, nothing like home, nothing like any home he'd ever been in. There was only a little sand—a beach, but nothing like the beach back home. The sky was different. The sun didn't seem to shine as bright, the clouds weren't as soft, and the sky wasn't half as bright blue. He hadn't seen the stars, yet, but he knew even those would be unfamiliar. “Houses” surrounded him like the homes dug into the cave walls, how could anyone stay in one place like this?, and something was softly following him. He wanted to call it music, but it was like no music he'd ever heard before.

… He didn't even have Boota. A note of pain resonated in his heart as he thought about facing the future in this place without Boota. They were companions, side by side, always with each other since long before any plans to break out of the underground. Boota was Simon's constant companion. And he didn't know how he felt about taking off on this journey alone.

… Okay so maybe not alone. He stared at the pokeball in his hand. How did that... creature... fit in there? What was he supposed to do with it? Fight? This had to be a joke, right? What out there couldn't Simon take on himself? He sighed. This seemed like one of the schemes Kamina would really get into.

Calming down, finally, Simon stared at the path again, scratching his head. First things first—he had to find Nia. Nia always came first. He pocketed the ball, taking the first step onto the path.

Once he found her, he'd bring her home. And that was the end of it.
