Character: Arthur Pendragon not_a_clotpole Fandom: Merlin Character Notes: History:
As Crown Prince of Camelot Arthur has a lot of expectations placed on him and he places a lot on himself. He generally hides any uncertainties and fears he won't be good enough under a mask of cockiness and bravado.
Arthur idolises his father, King Uther, however in recent years they have clashed more than once over important issues especially in terms of how to tread the lower classes in Camelot and beyond.
Arthur is also close to his father's ward - Morgana, the two have a sibling-like relationship and love to tease each other, but when push come to shove Arthur will do anything (even disobey his father) to help her out.
A few months before his 21st birthday an out of towner by the name of Merlin saved him from an assassination attempt, and as a reward the King made the strange fellow Arthur's personal manservant. The two have a complex relationship which varies between friendship and relentless teasing. Whatever weirdness Merlin displays (and he displays it often) he's fiercely loyal to Arthur something which he deeply appreciates - no matter how many objects Arthur throws in Merlin's direction.
When it comes to romance Arthur's in a very precarious position, he is in love with Morgana's handmaiden - Guinevere and if the difference in class wasn't a big enough hurdle there is also the fact that his father had her father executed. Gwen doesn't seem to hold that against him, but ever practical she doesn't believe their relationship can possibly work. For his part, Arthur doesn't think it's fair to make her wait for the day when he will be King and can make whatever rules he likes. In the meantime the specter of an arranged marriage hangs over his head.
Arthur knows almost nothing about his mother because Uther refuses to talk about her, partly because of grief and partly because he is keeping a terrible secret (that is he asked a witch to use magic so Arthur could be concieved. The price for this magic was Ygraine's life - a price Uther apparently didn't know about and as a result magic of any kind is punishable by death in Camelot and just after Ygraine's death Uther instituted a Great Purge in which hundred of men, women and children were killed).
As mentioned, Arthur is cocky - or in Merlin's word a clotpole (or prat if he's feeling nice). When you first meet him he comes off as someone who is every inch a prince, destined for the crown. He is fiercely competitive, but fears others might go 'easy on him' since he is the heir to the throne which fuels doubts in his abilities.
As a Knight of Camelot Arthur places a huge amount of importance on the Knights Code of Honour - he'll never back out of a properly issued challenge even if the odds appear entirely against him.He also values fairness in so far as the lower classes are not taken advantage of and are protected (in the face of his father's more pragmatic approach of protecting and valuing the nobility). These views have become firmer thanks to his friendship with Merlin and his feelings for Guinevere.
Arthur carries around some guilt for being responsible (as he sees it) for his mother, Ygraine's death as she died giving birth to him. He wishes desperately that he could have known her and have at least some sort of memory about her.
He also wants to please his father, for most of his life in fact he thought he was a disappointment to King Uther, his father has told him nothing could be further from the truth but because of Uther's own personality (cold, angry and paranoid) Arthur sometimes finds it hard to believe.
Despite his gnerally prattish and snobby behaviour, Arthur cares a great deal for the people of Camelot and wants to be a king they can be proud of.
Other: - Spoilers!
Arthur is an expert warrior 'trained to kill since birth' in his own words. For a number of years he was Champion (and technically still is, even though a chap called Sir William holds the honours) and is skilled in swordfighting, archery, jousting, hand to hand combat and prides himself on his ability with a mace.
At present Arthur is unaware of his manservant/friend Merlin's magical abilities - although he does wonder from time to time how someone as clumsy as Merlin always manages to survive (and often save him in the process!). Arthur's own view of magic is convoluted, he is not as paranoid as his father, but due to an incident involving the 'ghost' of his mother he tends to believe that those who use magic do so only for evil purposes. (The jury's still out on whether he really did meet his mother or if it was a trick).
He also unaware of Morgana's abilities and the fact that she is plotting revenge against his father, he is further unaware of a great secret - that Morgana is Uther's daughter - the result of an affair, and thus his half-sister. Because of this Morgana has some claim on the throne, but only if Arthur was to die as well as Uther. She is being careful to keep up an act so as far as Arthur's concerned he and Morgana are close as ever.
I don't even know where this book came from...let alone why I'm writing in it. It's probably bewitched or haunted or something. I should take this to my father.
Then again...
Obviously this is some sort of joke, I bet Merlin's behind it. But if he thinks I'm going to write in this and then leave it out for him to read he must think I'm as stupid as he is.
I'm obviously not.
Although why am I writing in it...feelings and stuff...it's all so girly.
Then again, maybe I need to write down things...get them out. Things I can hardly tell my father, or Morgana.
God knows I can't tell them to Merlin.
Third Person:
Ever since Morgana's return things have been...different in Camelot.
Of course, Arthur would never attribute the change in atmosphere to her.
After all enough other strange things have happened since then - his father's brush with insanity, Morgana's (second) brush with death.
And the donkey ears.
But the less said about that the better.
He paced now, he couldn't think clearly. All his attempts to make his father reconsider had fallen on deaf ears - King Uther had been clear and unrelenting. He seemed to have forgotten he'd married for love.
Still, as little as Arthur knew about his mother he was sure she'd been a princess and Guinevere...
Guinevere was 'just' a servant. His father didn't even know her name. It was hard for Arthur to recall there was a time when he hadn't known her name either.
She'd always seen this happening, One day you'll find your real princess, but he'd refused to believe it, it would work out for them, it had too.
Guinevere had been much more clear sighted than him, which was why he was pacing around this room, trying to forget that tomorrow is his wedding day. That tomorrow he will have to say goodbye to her forever ...to pretend that he no longer loves her. As far as he was concerned it would be impossible.
For a moment he considered going back to his father, telling him he would not go through with it and it was not just the fact he didn't love Princess Elena...that he loved Guinevere.
But he couldn't do that...her life as a servant, an oprhan was hard enough, this would only make things worse. And he would never make things worse for Guinevere, even if it broke his heart.
I don't need this, really I don't. It's not as if my life is unexciting... There's been a dragon, a griffin, that witch Morgause...the troll.
The troll was rather hilarious, I suppose, I don't think I've seen Father look so horrified in his life.
Speaking of which...it's occured to me I've never had as many near death experiences as I have these last tree years.
If I didn't know better, I'd think Merlin had something to do with it. Wouldn't surprise me actually, to find out he's bad luck, his looks certainly seem to be a product of it.
But then...
Well...there's someting about him. I mean he's actually give me good advice...once.
Still, I've never had a servant cause me this much trouble.
We're sorry, but this application has been rejected. We feel that you do not have a grasp on character voice; the samples are lacking in flow, and do not sound natural for the character. In addition, we would recommend getting a better feel for what he would be likely to talk about. Please feel free to reapply!
