Character: James Tiberius ("Jim") Kirk Fandom:Star Trek (2009 movie, aka reboot)
Character Notes: History: James Tiberius Kirk, named after both grandfathers, was born in space in the year 2233, in a small escape pod literally moments before his father died saving his and many other lives. During his infant and toddler years, he and his older brother Sam were mostly raised by their mother’s parents, her mother having moved in to help with the boys now that Winona was alone. As time passed, his mother remarried, his elder brother ran away from home because of tension with their stepfather and Jim, a bright young thing, became a delinquent. At the age of thirteen, he was sent to live with extended family in the Tarsus system. His planet, Tarsus IV, underwent a food shortage during his time there. Kodos, the governor at the time, made the highly criticized decision to have half of the eight-thousand-plus population killed in order for the other half to live. Under Kodos’ convoluted view of eugenics, Jim’s family were among those sentenced to death. Jim himself survived, being one of only nine to come face to face with the governor and thus able to identify him as a perpetrator of this mass murder. Although help came, Jim returned to the family farm in Iowa a much more jaded young man.
As a mentor of his once put it, he’s “the only genius level repeat offender in the Midwest.” If there was trouble to be found in or anywhere near Riverside Iowa, Jim found it. From hotwiring cars to breaking into a bank, simply to see if he could, his brilliance was clearly wasted. And then he found Starfleet, which could have been very good or very bad. Determination, however, was not something Jim Kirk could be found lacking in. If someone believed he wasn’t capable of doing something, or told him he wouldn’t happen, he would do it, just to prove them wrong. As a consequence, he was praised as one of the brightest cadets of his year, excelling in physics, xenolinguistics, survival training, hand-to-hand combat, and strategy-based command courses.
When the planet of Vulcan was attacked and Starfleet cadets shipped out to investigate, the Admiralty ruled he was grounded, pending further trial for a violation of school code. Evidence of just how strong his charm and personality can rub off on a person, his friend, Doctor Leonard McCoy ended up essentially sneaking Jim aboard anyway. When serious trouble broke out in the form of a genocidal, time traveling Romulan, Jim proved himself a hero went above and beyond what anyone expected of him (except maybe Bones; he likes to think his best friend would believe him to be some sort of superman), saving Earth and earning the Captain’s chair of the Enterprise, to boot.
Personality: James Kirk is the sort of person nobody lacks an opinion of: he is loved, hated, or regarded with some masochistic mixture of the two. Nevertheless, his personality – strong, hard-headed, resourceful, loyal, and stubborn – begs to be opined. In a professional setting, he can be called upon as an intelligent mind, possessing higher than average IQ, but is best renowned for his leadership and tactical skills. He has a gift for computer hacking, xenolinguistics, and mathematics, among other things, but his passion is in proving others wrong when it comes to his abilities. To put it simply, he doesn’t believe in no-win scenarios or anything being "impossible." That word simply means he has to be a little more creative in going about solving the given problem. Perhaps the strongest evidence of how strong his faith when it comes to this is the Kobayashi Maru. It’s a computer simulation given to Starfleet cadets to A) practice their bridge skills and B) coerce them into showing level-headedness even in the face of certain failure. Jim, already haven taken the test twice, took it a third time and had an unwitting accomplice install a subroutine in the program. He’d won what no one else had, because he wasn’t afraid to change the circumstances to be in his and his crew’s favour, no matter what the cost. This is a trait he looks for in the people he surrounds himself with, namely, his crew. The Enterprise, throughout her first rescue mission and subsequent, impressed again and again by doing things she oughtn’t have been able to do. While individual crew members were obviously a factor in this, Jim is their unifying force, the thing that brings them together and tells them to forget about the laws of physics and just do what needs to be done. This is something Jim both loves doing – motivating – and is great at doing. He can be critically supportive or switch to more gently so on a whim, wanting simply what’s best for those around him and the universe at large.
This resoundingly strong personality tends to carry over into her personal life, translating into charm that few bother trying to resist. He’s a flirt, by every definition of the word and people tend to fall for him, if only for the evening. Socially, he enjoys drinking, sex, poker, and if the situation permits, a good bar brawl. But not necessarily in that order.
Other: Jim has an assortment of rather severe allergies, including to most types of nuts and numerous vaccines. As a result, it is strongly advised no one give him medicine without express permission from his CMO. And for "strongly", "on pain of death" could be humorously exchanged. First Person (entry type): I suppose treating this as a bit of a personal log will do best, then, right? Right. This week on board the Enterprise has been lacking in intergalactic tension. As a result, the more mundane issues of four hundred very different but all opinionated crew being stuck together for just under a year now are showing. Today, I walked into one of our recreational lounges to find two crewmen being physically held apart by my First Officer. Naturally, I demand an explanation. A fist fight, Spock says, and then the women elaborate: over an unfaithful man. While I completely condone practicing hand to hand in down time, this is why I expressly never promise polygamy when I’m not going to get it. This sort of fighting should be reserved for bikinis in pools of jello or mud. Hypothetically. In a situation where... fun is the prime directive. I’m totally digging myself into an auditory hole right now. Jeesh.
So, new topic. My lovely Yeoman has a birthday coming up soon. Chapel came to talk to me a few weeks ago about throwing a surprise party for Janice. I, being an unorganized idiot – emphasis on the "idiot" – told her I’d take care of all the details. Rather than risk Janice catching the file on one of my PADDs, I opted for writing my ideas and to-do list on paper and leaving it... somewhere. That’s the whole issue. I’ll be damned if I can remember where I put it. Now not only is there a chance Janice’ll find it and ruin the surprise, I’ve lost days worth of brilliant ideas. I kinda need those back.
Oh, well. I guess that’ll either work itself out somehow or I’ll just have to go be really nice to Chapel for a few days. So as long as I don’t get told off for trying to flirt with her, things are gonna be a-okay. Kirk, out.
Third Person: Some aches were better than others. There was a fine line you could toe between pain and pleasure and he’d strode most of it at one time or another. He was there again today, triumphant and proud, grinning, but every move ginger, like he’d had One of Those Days. Maybe because he had. Negotiations went sour, things got violent. He’d thought, for one terrifying moment, he was going to be looking for a replacement First Officer.
But Jim and his crew aboard the Enterprise were nothing if not persistent. So even though the odds were never in their favour, they still got what had to be done done. They picked up a few war wounds along the way, but everyone lived. That was important.
Every single muscle and ligament and bone and particle of skin on Jim’s body hurt like hell. But it was a good ache, a winning ache. He glanced to Spock, right where he ought to be, at his station. Spock, right on cue, turned to share a look with his Captain, then give a nod. A quick check in with Engineering and Jim’s girl was ready to leave this planet behind her.
“Helm,” Jim commanded, “Take us out of orbit. Let’s get some distance between us and this place.”
“With pleasure, sir.” A shared grin between helmsman and navigator didn’t quite escape Jim’s eye as the Enterprise’s engines thrummed to life, powering up so much more to break orbit than to maintain it. Jim loved that sound, that feel. He was perhaps a little less fond of the way pain shot through his shoulder and down his back when Bones squeezed his shoulder, but simply having the doctor give that little gesture made up for it.
He wince was more pronounced than he’d hoped, apparently, because all of a sudden, he had a small tirade coming at him about not reporting to medical immediately after away missions. Jim caught Spock’s glance again, then stood, his body protesting its use. “Alright, Bones, you got me,” he said, holding up his hands in surrender. “I’m on my way to Medical with you right now. And, Spock, you’ve got the chair. Keep up the great work.”
“Thank you.” With an incline of his head, Spock gave one of those looks that Jim could just tell was a smile, no matter how hidden by stoicism. Jim grinned and left the bridge with Bones, leaning against the wall of the turbolift once he was certain the bridge crew couldn’t see.
“Where does it hurt?” Such a doctor question.
“Everywhere.” Such a Kirk response. But he was smiling, that dopey little grin that was reserved for special occasions. Most of those occasions seemed to find him in pain, but he could live with that, so long as it kept being good aches.
