Finn is an only child, raised by his mother as his dad was killed fighting in the Middle East when Finn was very young. He has been interested in music since he was a kid, when his mum hired a lawn care man who loved music and told Finn he had talent. However, he never pursued a musical hobby and instead went for sport at school.
He was blackmailed into joining New Directions, McKinley High’s show choir, by Will Shuester after Will supposedly found drugs in Finn’s locker. Finn insists that he’s never seen the drugs before and offers to pee in a cup to prove he’s innocent, but Will says possession is still enough to get him in serious trouble. Not wanting his mum to find out about this, Finn agrees to join glee when Will says he won’t mention the drugs to anyone if he does.
It takes a while for Finn to feel he really belongs in glee, but once he does he finds he really enjoys it. Following his lead, his girlfriend and two of her fellow Cheerios also join, as well as some other members of the football team.
Despite never actually having sex with Quinn, when she falls pregnant he believes her when she says the baby is his. Throughout the first season, Quinn demands Finn help provide for her and the baby by paying for the various hospital bills and he eventually manages to find a job with Rachel’s help.
After his mum catches his singing to a video of Quinn’s sonogram, he has to ‘fess up about the pregnancy. It’s obviously a weight off his shoulders, and also makes him realise that he doesn’t like having to keep it secret. Following Kurt’s advice, he sings a very telling song when he goes to dinner with Quinn and her parents, which leads to Quinn being kicked out of her home. Finn takes her back to his house and explains what has happened to his mum, who says Quinn can stay with them for as long as she wants.
And as if all that wasn’t enough drama, Rachel realises that Puck is actually the father of the baby and tells Finn, who reacts by punching Puck, yelling at both him and Quinn, then quitting glee. Right before Sectionals. The others convince Jacob, another student, to take Finn’s place as they are required to have at least 12 members, but luckily Will manages to convince Finn not to let them all down. He saves them at the last minute by turning up with new set list suggestions – which are needed because cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester leaked their previous list to the other competitors. New Directions go on to win the competition, but Finn still can’t bring himself to forgive Puck and Quinn.
S1.5 begins with Rachel having decided that she and Finn are now dating, although Finn seems to be unsure that this was the right choice. He ends up telling her he doesn’t want to date her and instead goes on a date with Santana and Brittany, not realising they are only interested in him because Sue has told them to try and destroy Rachel. After a really bad evening with the two cheerleaders, Finn realises he was being an idiot and tells Rachel he’s changed his mind about being her boyfriend, only to find it’s too late and she’s found someone else. When he finds out this ‘someone else’ is the lead singer of their rival choir, Vocal Adrenaline, Finn tells Will, who goes to see Vocal Adrenaline’s coach in an attempt to put an end to the relationship.
When Rachel tells him that she’s no longer seeing Jesse, Finn believes her. However, Santana tells him Rachel was lying, which leads Finn to sleep with Santana because she tells him he would be more attractive if he wasn’t still a virgin. He really regrets doing this, though, because it didn’t mean anything and he doesn’t actually feel any different afterwards.
In an attempt to get closer to Finn, Kurt successfully sets their parents up. Unfortunately, Finn isn’t as excited about this development – because his mum starts throwing out some of their stuff, which he thinks is heartless, and because he thinks it means she’s forgetting his dad. However, after serious talks with both his mum and Burt, he begins to come round as he realises that the important thing is that his mum is happy and not lonely anymore. Despite that, he still dislikes the idea of moving in with the Hummels, mostly because he’s uncomfortable about the idea of sharing a room with Kurt. When he gets into an argument with Kurt, he uses a disrespectful term which Burt overhears, and he promptly kicks Finn out of the house. Finn tries to make up for this at the end of the Gaga episode by dressing in a showercurtain-gagaesque outfit and standing up to the other jocks who are bullying Kurt.
At the end of the season, the glee clubbers discover that Jesse has gone back to Vocal Adrenaline. This bombshell threatens to ruin them, but Finn finds Rachel and tells her that as New Directions’ leaders, it is down to them to make sure the club does its best. Right before they perform, he tells Rachel he loves her. Unfortunately, New Directions fail to even place at Regionals, leaving them all thinking that glee club will be disbanded. In an unexpected show of kindness, however, Sue insists that she wants the club to have another year.
S2: With Matt having transferred to another school, Finn and Rachel take it upon themselves to try and recruit new members for glee. The club’s performance on campus isn’t overly successful, but Finn notices one guy who looks like he might be interested. He later overhears this person, Sam Evans, singing in the shower and tries to convince him to join glee.
Finn is temporarily kicked off the football team after their new coach, Shannon Beiste, thinks he is disrespecting her by asking that she consider allowing Artie to try out for the team. Sam takes over as quarterback and for a while nothing more is said about him joining glee. However, by the 4th episode Sam is part of the club, much to Kurt’s excitement. When they are assigned a duets task, Finn doesn’t want Kurt and Sam to sing together – Kurt thinks this is because he is still uncomfortable about Kurt being gay, but Finn insists that it’s only because he doesn’t want Sam to get bullied for singing a duet with another male, as he thinks this will make Sam leave the club. He and Rachel also think that the best way to ensure Sam sticks around is if he wins the duet competition, so they decide to do a poor performance. Sam and Quinn do win, but only just.
Just prior to Sam joining glee, Finn ends up as quarterback again following Sam being involved in an accident that results in him dislocating his shoulder. Finn thinks this is partly due to his prayer to the ‘Grilled Cheesus’ that appeared on a sandwich he made. He feels guilty that Sam got hurt, but is glad to be back in ‘his’ position. Another of his prayers was that he might get to touch Rachel’s boobs, which also happens. He feels guilty for not praying for Kurt’s dad, who is in hospital, and ends up going for a meeting with the school guidance counsellor, Emma. He explains everything to her, but she convinces him that the grilled cheesus probably didn’t have anything to do with his recent bouts of luck. After singing ‘Losing My Religion’, he eats the sandwich.
In the first season of Glee Finn is introduced as a jock, albeit a fairly likeable one. Although he hangs out with people who think it’s funny to throw their classmates in the dumpsters, he tends to take a step back – at one point he holds Kurt’s designer jacket so it doesn’t get ruined, but he doesn’t go as far as preventing Puck and the others from bullying Kurt. This is mostly due to his desperate need to be popular and liked; he knows how people expect him to act and is also very aware of how the tables might turn if he were to say anything that went against what the other jocks think and do.
However, once he joins New Directions, Finn does begin to stand up to the others. He still wants to fit in, but not if it comes at the price of humiliating others or doing something dangerous, such as rolling a portaloo when there’s a kid in a wheelchair trapped inside it.
He’s loyal and stands by Quinn when she tells him she’s pregnant with his child, getting a job so he can help pay her hospital bills and letting her move in with him and his mum when her parents kick her out. Because of this, he feels incredibly hurt and betrayed when it is finally revealed that Quinn was actually lying to him. He’s generally quite laid back and easy-going, but when he gets angry he tends to really blow up: we’re talking yelling, table-flipping and punching.
While he’s certainly not the brightest bulb in the box and can be very naive at times, he does have a manipulative streak too and shows a unique skill for sweet-talking people into doing what he wants.

First Person (entry type): I’m still kinda bummed out about that whole cheesus thing. I mean, I totally understand what Miss Pillsbury said, it was logical and everything, I get that. But it was nice thinking there was someone watching over me and helping me out, you know? ‘specially with Rachel. We haven’t done anything...more, since she let me touch her boobs. If you can even call it that – I realised afterwards it was only the sides of them, which hardly counts. If I still had the Grilled Cheesus then I could pray more and maybe me and Rachel’d go a bit further...
I’d have to word it real carefully though. I still feel bad about what happened to Sam, I totally didn’t mean for his arm to end up dislocated. Seriously, it would have been better if I’d got to be quarterback again some other way. Not...that I’m complaining about that part.
Third Person: Finn took his time rummaging in his locker. Out of the corner of his eye he could see Rachel gesticulating wildly (was that the right word? He thought it was – Kurt used it the other day in this sort of context, right? But it did sort of sound made up...whatever, she was waving her arms about) as she ranted about— something. He wasn’t sure what, he’d stopped listening about two minutes ago right about the time Rachel started complaining about Mr. Schue’s music choices the previous week. All he had to do was nod and make some agreeable noises in the right places and he was golden.
He should probably stop messing about with his locker. It was a good distraction, but there were only so many times you could rearrange your books before people thought you were weird. Dropping his math book into his bag, he slammed the locker door shut and turned to Rachel with a grin.
“Yeah, I totally agree. So, you maybe wanna go out tonight?” And just like that he’d gotten away with zoning out during yet another Rachel Rant.
