Player nickname: Orlando Player LJ:elspeth_vimes Way to contact you: Email: agreylady@gmail.com AIM: ElspethVimes Other: plurk Are you at least 15?: Y. Current Characters: Batou, Alberich, Pam Landy, Ivan Vanko, Christopher Carrion
Character: November 11 (a.k.a. Jack Simon, a.k.a. Mr. Smith, and probably a.k.a. a bunch more) Fandom:Darker than Black Character Notes: History: His real name is unknown. Anything about his life before ten years ago is unknown, with the exception of the fact that he is British. What is known is that ten years ago when the Gates appeared, he became a Contractor, with the ability to freeze any liquid he comes in contact with. He was either already working for or was subsequently recruited by the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), and given the code name November 11. He has certainly been working for MI6 for over five years, as he was in the Service before the Heaven's Gate incident, during the time that the woman codenamed February was working with them.
He has worked with fellow Contractor April, who can create rain, and the Doll July for a long enough time that they have become a fairly close team. He travels frequently on missions and assumes many covers, sometimes as a private citizen, sometimes under diplomatic cover. He is known as MI6's top agent.
It's likely that he's always hated smoking. Which makes the fact that he has to smoke as payment for using his powers all the more annoying.
I'd be starting him out a few months pre-canon.
November 11 2/3? (but then I am also enabling her, so)
Personality: Conventional wisdom holds that Contractors are purely rational beings, lacking in all emotion, interested only in themselves, and retaining what personalities they might have out of habit.
This is not entirely accurate.
It's true that Contractors loose most, if not all, of their emotions, frequently becoming extremely logical and self-interested. And November lives up to that, for the most part. He takes pride in being a Contractor. He makes rational decisions. He plans in order to gain the most from situations. He is loyal because it makes sense to exercise a certain amount of loyalty- it makes it easier to gain from the cooperation of those you are loyal to.
But over time Contractors can regain some emotion, some illogical or selfless motivations. Over time people you know well can become friends. November would say that he always acts on his own behalf, but he is growing capable of acting on behalf of those he is becoming close to. As for who he can become close to, it's mostly people whose intelligence and skills he can respect.
November himself is extremely intelligent and observant. He seldom enters a situation without a plan, and usually has a backup plan to go with that plan. He prepares for the worst, for example he'll expect people to go back on deals or for someone in another government to leak information. He is quick to put information together to form likely pictures of the whole, he's very good at figuring out what games and roles others are playing.
He is, as one might expect, capable of being extremely ruthless. If someone gets in the way of the mission, he'll kill them. If someone is likely to get in the way of the mission further down the line, he'll kill them. He displays no qualms about this, or about other things such as tying a person up and stuffing them in a box. It's part of getting the job done.
But in many ways he manages to come off as kind. He's quite polite, though he also has a tendency to assume a bit more familiarity than is appropriate. He'll be as helpful to others as the mission allows, and he'll avoid situations in which bystanders could be harmed whenever he can. He usually gets along well with people, and isn't suspected of being a Contractor until he uses his powers. This all makes sense to him as well, but it's done with a charming attitude and a nice little smile that can make others well-inclined.
...Of course, he'll also have that smile while killing people. So "kind" really isn't the best word for it.
In addition to slowly developing some deeper emotions, he has maintained a number of personality quirks. He hates smoking, and will tell you why in great detail. He also gets a little annoyed at people who take delight in their vices or who can enjoy their payment. Probably out of an interest in other peoples' reactions, he frequently makes deadpan black humor comments, which are as unappreciated as they are tasteless. He tries telling regular jokes as well, even going so far as to use one for a voicemail message. He can't pull it off. He likes salsa music, as reflected by his loud cell phone ringtone. He dresses for the role of top spy, in impeccable, stylish suits frequently accompanied by sunglasses.
Contractors are sometimes accused of being nothing more than weapons. November 11 may be one, but on his own terms.
Other: If the situation calls for it, he has no problem being entirely without (http://baratijasblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/november11.jpg) that snappy suit (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_2aTodPb8a-0/Sl6StlsjunI/AAAAAAAABKI/jlQDt5G7crg/s320/darker-than-black-vol4.jpg).

First Person (entry type): "Once upon a time there was a king who lived in two-story grass hut. Every holiday the king demanded to be given a new, more elaborate throne as a gift. As soon as a new throne arrived, he would store the old throne on the second level of his grass hut and use the new throne instead. But one day the hut collapsed from the weight of all the thrones, and everyone was crushed and killed.
This is why those who live in grass houses shouldn't stow thrones."
I've been using that as my voicemail message, but my coworkers are complaining. Do any of you have better suggestions?
Third Person:
November 11 considered the bottles lined up behind the bar. Uniformly cheap, unsurprising in a dive like this.
Well, that would make it less of a waste if he had to use it. He smiled slightly.
There was movement, reflected in the mirror that hung above the bottles. Someone had come into the bar, finally shifting the attention of a few of the patrons away from the new man in the white suit. November examined the newcomer's reflection. Mid-forties, dark hair going grey, tall but portly, a nervous disposition. Yes, that would be his contact.
The man sat down on the stool next to November. "Are you George Williams?" Between his fidgeting and darting looks in every direction, he was painfully obvious.
"I am," November said easily, leaning back and smiling at the man. "Care for a drink? It's on me."
"Oh, yes, thank you. Uh- whiskey." November watched as the man accepted the glass from the bartender with relief, taking a large gulp.
The man wasn't used to this line of work. November had been warned about that. But this level of discomposure was concerning. Surely any organization would have emphasized the importance of taking more care, would have given him a little basic training. Of course, the man could be under stress from another source as well.
November's eyes flicked briefly down to the glass in his own hand, still full. He was prepared.
