Personality: Rapunzel is very upbeat and optimistic. She tries her hardest to make the best out of bad situations. Despite her wish to go out into the world and see the floating lights she does what she can to entertain herself in the tower and keep her mother happy. Instead of complaining about her sheltered life she makes the best of it. She isn’t truly happy inside, but she doesn’t want to be a gloomy sort of person. She says to Pascal “I like it in here and so do you”. The audience knows better, but she sounds believable. She’s convinced herself to be happy when she isn’t really.
She’s fairly curious, though clearly not enough to escape the tower against her mother’s wishes because she believes her to be fair. Within the capacity of the tower however she’s stretched her curiosity as far as it can go. She learned numerous talents such as baking, dancing, cleaning, playing chess and darts, painting and candle making. However at the start of the movie it is clear that her curiosity and creativity is being stifled now that she has been in the tower so long. She just wants to see what is outside her tower so that she can continue to grow and learn as much as she can. She’s aware that that is something she can no longer do in the confines of her tower.
Rapunzel is caring and optimistic so she likes to believe the best in people. She is of course aware that there are bad people in the world since her mother had driven that into her head from day one. Despite that though, she wants to believe there are good people out there. It is only because of the goodness and fairness of her mother that she doesn’t escape the tower. It is when she sees that Gothel is not as fair as she once thought that Rapunzel makes her plans to escape. Even when she does escape she feels terrible about lying and going against her mother’s wishes.
While Rapunzel is somewhat naïve she is far from stupid. Thanks to her mother’s warnings she is well aware of danger and betrayal. In making her deal to have Flynn be her guide to the floating lights she shows that she knows how to think things through. She didn’t just escape blindly into the forest to find the lights. Instead she made a bargain for Flynn’s guidance and her safety. She isn’t helpless either. Using her hair and a frying pan Rapunzel defends herself and saves Flynn on several occasions.
Above all Rapunzel is kind hearted and good natured. She is passionate about the people and things she loves. She would do anything to help her loved ones and stands by the people who she admires. She may be initially frightened of people who have a “ruffian” or “thug-like” appearance, but she tries not to judge a book by its cover. She loves to get to know people for who they really are and in return she is open and honest with them.
