Some time later, Castiel appears to Dean in a dream asking to meet him in the real world, because he has something important to tell him. But before the Winchesters can arrive at the address, Castiel has been forcibly taken back to heaven, leaving his vessel, Jimmy Novak, in his place.
Jimmy escapes the Winchesters to return to his family. He's caught in a confrontation between demons and the Winchesters and near death when Cas reappears, this time using Jimmy's daughter Claire as a vessel. Jimmy begs for Cas to take him back as a vessel instead, wanting to protect his daughter. He obliges.
When Dean finally gets a chance to ask Cas what he wanted to tell him, he says that he learned his lesson after being taken back to Heaven. He doesn't serve man or Dean, only Heaven. They've really brainwashed him out of any of the doubts or slowly growing emotions he was cultivating up to that point.
In 4x21, Dean discovers that Sam has been drinking demon blood, and calls on Cas, asking him if Sam is capable of killing Lilith. Castiel says yes, but reiterates that the angels believe Dean should accept the role of stopping the apocalypse, not Sam. Dean finally agrees and swears loyalty to God and the angels, for Sam's sake.
Acting on Heaven's orders, Castiel sneaks back into Bobby's house and uses his powers to release Sam from the panic room where he was detoxing. Anna confronts him about his actions, and he basically blows the whistle on her, leaving her to be taken captive by other angels.
Later, Zachariah and Castiel hold Dean captive in the Green Room-- a place where angels can control reality and hold living humans until they want to set them out on some task. Dean pleads with Cas, first for him to let him out so he can see Sam, and then to help him stop the apocalypse. Cas refuses both. Or so it seems. He leaves, but then returns abruptly, forcing Dean against a wall and signaling for him to remain quiet. He draws a sigil on the wall and as soon as Zachariah returns, pushes his hand against the sigil to banish Zachariah away. Cas then explains that he will take Dean to stop him from killing Lilith-- because her death is the final seal. They visit Chuck, who tells them where Sam and Liltith are. An archangel comes to Chuck's "rescue", and Cas sends Dean directly to the convent while trying to hold the archangel off.
Season 5 begins with Sam and Dean revisiting Chuck, who has the special privilege of being the one to inform them that the archangel killed Castiel, making him explode like "a water balloon of chunky soup."
Zachariah manages to lure the Winchesters to their father's old storage unit in Buffalo under the pretense that the archangel Michael's sword is there. Only… surprise, Dean is Michael's sword. As in, his vessel. Dean refuses to say yes to Michael, even with Zachariah torturing both him and Sam. Cas appears out of nowhere, taking on and decimating Zachariah's angel posse with his sweet angel killing sword. After scaring the shit out of Zachariah to make him leave, Cas explains that Lucifer wants a vessel too, so they need to be on their guard. He even does them a favor and burns some Enochian sigils into their ribs, to help them stay off the radar of any angels. When the Winchesters ask him how he's still alive, he admits that he doesn't know and vanishes.
When they next see him, it's in the hospital room where Bobby had been being treated. He explains his situation to them further-- he has basically rebelled against Heaven, cutting him off to a grand majority of his angel powers. Cas then explains that his plan to stop Lucifer is to find God and get him to intervene, demanding that Dean give him the amulet he's had since … forever, claiming that it will burn hot in the presence of God. At first Dean refuses, mocking him, which pisses Cas off immeasurably after all the shit he's done for the Winchesters. Dean finally gives in, with the addendum that Cas better not lose it.
Personality: Castiel, in general, comes off as very blunt, tactless, and sometimes even a little naive to humans. This is because he's an angel, and being such, has spent most of his very long life with minimal human contact. For thousands of years the played the role of a solider for heaven, simply obeying orders. Coming into contact with Dean seems to be the first time he's ever had extensive exposure to humans, as far as anyone can tell. He probably wouldn't admire humans the way he does at the beginning of season four otherwise.
First and foremost, he's a soldier. Loyalty is one of Castiel's strongest character traits. When he takes someone's side, he's there completely, to the bitter end. When he sides with the Winchesters, he never looks back. He says he sometimes doubts God's plans, but he remains steadfast and loyal. Even though he betrays his angel family, he still retains his belief that God wouldn't stand for what's become Heaven, with all the bloodthirsty for an apocalypse. Discovering that God has given up and refuses to help is one of the most shattering moments in his life.
As a solder, he's very goal-oriented and dedicated to completing tasks. He's also very insistent on doing things his way. He won't even question Sam and Dean about their thoughts on the matter. He'll just pick them up, teleport them somewhere, and set them to work with info on a strictly need to know basis. He was willing to kill a child because he was the antichrist and could cause innumerable deaths if manipulated by the wrong person. Sam and Dean have to argue with him that there has to be another way. This cutthroat practicality is hard for Cas to step away from.
Because he's an angel, he has a stunted capacity for human emotions. Anna calls him on this when he tries to apologize to her and basically says that he isn't capable. Furthermore, he doesn't get the more subtle nuances of human behavior-- for example, he doesn't know how to lie for the sake of being comforting. He pretty much never lies at all, actually. The more time he spends around Sam and Dean, though, the easier it is for him to access emotions-- mostly negative ones, like anger and betrayal-- at his limited capacity. Another part of Castiel's angel fail? He doesn't get pop culture references. At all. His tendency to misunderstand and take things at face value makes his life around Dean really awkward.
Despite his lack of grasp on human emotions, he admires humans more than anything. He thinks they're God's greatest creations. This is a stark contrast to the opinion of most angels, who view humans as mere scum at worst and pawns to shuffle around at best. But not Cas. He calls them "pieces of art." He even scolds his brothers for thinking less of them.
Cas doesn't mince his words. He never says more than he needs to, and what he says is always what he means. If you aren't on the exact same page as him, he can seem really cryptic. Dean says he's "allergic to straight answers", which is a pretty accurate assessment.
Other: Since Cas is an angel, he's powerful as all get out. His abilities include but are not limited to: ❖ His powers come from his ~grace~, which is basically the energy that makes angels … angels. If they lose their grace somehow, they become mortal. ❖ In addition to being a big ball of glowiness approximately the size of the Chrysler building that can possess people, he can speak to people through electronics, such as radios or televisions. Which is pretty funny considering how… thoroughly baffled he is by using devices such as cellphones manually. ❖ Their appearance can cause physical phenomena, like lights flickering or a sudden wind. ❖ He has superhuman strength. ❖ He can teleport through time and space. Additionally, he can take other people with him. According to Dean, it's not a very pleasant experience. ❖ He can look into the eyes of other angels and be able to tell if they're lying or not. It's not clear if this extends to humans, too, but it probably does. ❖ He can heal himself and others. It's pretty fucking hard to kill an angel. You need a magical stupid looking sword. ❖ By placing two fingers to a person's forehead, he can alter memories or render them unconscious. ❖ He can exorcise demons from humans by touching them. ❖ He has telekinesis. Angel have… a lot of abilities, okay. ❖ He can go to Hell to perform human rescue missions.
HOWEVER, in the canon point I'm taking him from, he's lost a lot of these abilities because Heaven is pissed off at him. But he's still pretty powerful, and I'll probably put up a permission post for him … possibly being able to just ~know~ things about people.
First Person (entry type): [Cas is having some trouble operating the phone he's trying to post from. In fact, he's having a lot of trouble operating the phone he's trying to post from. There are button pushing noises that indicate he is doing nothing but frantically pushing buttons in an attempt to make the DDD interface go way. Too bad it's not working. Dean. Dean. Are you there? Something is wrong with my phone. This isn't funny. I'm running out of minutes, and this is taking up battery time. I don't understand what ducks have to do with anything. Why are there waterfowl on my cellphone screen? It wants me to post. How do I--

Castiel hadn't been keeping track of how long they'd been waiting, but he was fairly sure it had to be several hours of human time at this point. He should have known better than to embark on this mission with Gabriel. Anna was more trustworthy, despite her betrayal. But he'd been a betrayer too, hadn't he? That's what the three of them were. A ragtag team of mostly fallen angels out on a search for their deadbeat dad. And as furious-- well, as much as he was capable of being furious, which felt like more and more these days-- as he had been with Gabriel for turning his back on their entire family, he couldn't deny that their chances of finding God were much higher with him in tow. He was the one who'd actually spoken with Him, after all.
He hadn't exchanged words with Anna since Gabriel left, but it didn't feel strange in any way. He didn't mind sitting quietly and waiting.
Until he thought of the Winchesters. It always seemed to annoy Dean when he resigned himself to that. But they weren't there.
He missed them, he realized.
But this was a journey he had to embark on alone. Let Dean and Sam set off on their impossible task. Trying to kill Lucifer. It was insane. This plan was better by miles.
Oh. There was Gabriel. Finally. He regarded him with the same blank stare that he usually regarded the world with, only with a special dash of annoyance just for his brother.
