Character: Saotome Alto
Fandom: Macross Frontier
Character Notes:
History:
A Series Of Important Events:

- 18 years ago, Saotome Alto is born into a family of fine Kabuki actors. He strongly resembles his mother, a beautiful, beautiful woman who longed to see the real sky. And therefore, because of that, Alto's love for the sky is also born.

- He followed in his father's footsteps and became a Kabuki actor, having a starring role in Sakurahime, a role that many in the film industry had not yet forgotten. However, he wanted to become a pilot; left home, and enrolled in Mihoshi Academy.

- He meets Sheryl and Ranka. Most notably, through an awful turn of events, he's forced to pilot his very first variable fighter due to a Vajra attack, and due to the previous pilot of said variable fighter getting squashed like a particularly noisy bug before his eyes. Shit happens. Lots of shit. Ranka gets rescued.

- After a good punch in the face from Ozma, Ranka's brother, another attack and so on and so forth, Alto finds out about the Vajra, and eventually becomes a part of SMS.

- Love triangle shenanigans blossom amongst all three of them. Days out with Sheryl, Ranka becoming a star, etc etc etc

- Sheryl takes him to a planet with a sky, but Sheryl falls seriously ill and more shit goes down, Ranka gets sent over and more Stuff Happens, which culminate in said planet pretty much getting ate in the face and dying. Because, you know, of Sheryl's manager.

- More shit happens, Sheryl is ill and Alto finds out. Ranka stumbles on them after a concert and is pained and another Vajra attack happens. War happens. Lots of casualties, and it turns out that because of her heartbreak, Ranka's song turns those vajra batshit.

- Michel dies. This is terrible.

- Ranka flies off with Ai-kun, leaving Alto livid and deeply, deeply upset.

- President Glass assassinated, new president comes to power. SMS revolts, Sheryl is dying, Alto realizes this and doesn't join in the rebellion. He has sex(?) with her and is committed to stay with her during her last days. More stuff happens. Alto swears to kill Ranka to protect Frontier, even if it pains him.

- He becomes an officer, engages in more wars/skirmishes until a final one where they save Ranka, save Sheryl, keep that love triangle pretty much intact, realize that the vajra weren't the bad guys after all - Grace is (remember that chick who was once Sheryl's manager?) - and promptly bugger off to their home planet to live there.

...I think that is pretty much it.

Personality: Saotome Alto is pretty much your average kind of guy. Pretty much. With his naturally girlish looks, he became famous for playing Sakura-hime in kabuki theater until he left home to pursue his dream of being a pilot. Born to a prestigious acting family, his past in theater is not something that he's particularly proud of, even though he's known as an excellent actor; much to his father's chagrin. He pretty much would rather take to the skies - it's his passion. Alto left his father to pursue aforementioned passion, and also out of typical teenage defiance. His first love is the sky and flying, and he has a natural gift for flight. Extremely agile and deadly when it came to dealing with enemies, he's one of the best in the fleet. Even then, he's more commonly nicknamed as 'Ohime-sama', or rather, Princess; a name that pretty much pisses him off whenever it's brought up.

However, being your typical teenage male, Alto is generally aloof, temperamental, defiant and brash, going along more with his emotions instead of logic. He has a short temper, flying off the handle alarmingly easily. He can be quite standoffish when you first meet him, stubborn, prideful and pigheaded, but Alto does have his heart in the right place when all is said and done. He doesn't play by the rules all that often; screwing said rules when it comes to sticky situations. However, it works quite well for him, and it is a wonder if he thinks quickly, or if he doesn't think at all.

Alto's the kind of guy who'd do almost anything for his friends, from taking the only day off to watch their concerts to charging headlong into the path of imminent danger - like straight into the mouth of a Vajra mothership, for one, just to save a friend trapped inside. He's fiercely protective of all that he cares about, and he relies on his emotions a lot more than his logic. Often reckless and pretty lucky when it comes to getting out of scrapes, Alto often comes out of situations the better for it. Often. He's a decent guy generally - he doesn't set out to be a heartbreaker or a lady-killer. When it comes to relationships, he's the kind of guy who's quite oblivious to his own/other girls' feelings for him. He's caught between two girls, and it's clear that he has some kind of special feeling for both of them, but he doesn't seem to be aware of it yet.

He's a nice guy when it comes to these things - down-to-earth, occasionally grumpy, and quite easy to rile up. While not a romantic, he can also be quite the pushover when it come right down to it, since he does have a soft spot for the ones he cares for. He takes things seriously and can be a little bit of a prude - he is a straight-laced kind of guy who's not prone to being flirtatious. He had a tendency to be contemplative and rather thoughtful from time to time, but those times are few and far between. Obliviously, endearingly insensitive most times, he still has an ability to not come off as too much of a heartless jerk despite his bluntness.

In short, he is an idiot.

He's also a person who tends to run away from things when he can, covering it up with fierce denials -- this can definitely be seen when Michel accuses him of running away more than once -- but he is made of stronger stuff than that when push comes to shove. Willing to even kill Ranka if she threatens the safety of Frontier, Alto has grown into a passionate, driven man able to put the needs of the many before his own.

Despite his aversion to acting and anything associated with it, Alto is still pretty self-aware, from time to time, about his appearance, and can be caught preening in the mirror occasionally when he's in the mood. He can also be caught reciting Japanese quotes/poetry from time to time, which shows that even when he shies away from his prestigious acting background, it still has a place in his heart.

Third Person:
[journal post]:

All right, look. This community might be populated with escaped convicts or psychotic chainsaw murderers who live with their mothers for all I know, and for all the sense I'm currently seeing in this thing, but I have a question.

Why is it called a duck and why is there drama? Nothing against ducks, but I doubt getting into water, swimming around, and floating out again is any cause for any theatrics. And what's this 'worlds' thing that you're going on about?

Are the lot of you alien life forms?

Sheryl, Ranka, this is the last time I ever check these sorts of things just because you say I should.

[third person / log sample]:

It is always a surprise, when one finally has the time - be it a few minutes or a few hours - to sit still and properly reflect on everything that had happened. Who would have thought, really, that he - Saotome Alto - had been instrumental in making history?

Then again, that is probably why Alto refrained from thinking about it too much; the subject itself is overwhelming, as did the battles he had been in up till now. He'd had enough adventure to last him a lifetime, and perhaps what was more thrilling would be the prospect of what happens next, right there in the Vajra home planet. It was always amazing, he notes, that he'd initially fought against such creatures, had only acknowledged them as enemies just a little more than a year ago.

Despite the few misgivings he still had about them - after all, both Sheryl and Ranka had been hurt by them before, and Alto was in no hurry to welcome them with open arms just yet - he was still somewhat surprised that he didn't despise them as much as he used to. And Ranka and Sheryl - who could have predicted that they had their own important roles to play in such a massive conflict? Who could have predicted how much they both would mean to him? He wouldn't admit it, of course, but he knows that it is clear enough in the concern that he shows for them, the things he would do to keep them from getting into trouble, because God knew, those two attracted trouble to them like an industrial strength magnet.

He sits on the edge of the roof, perched securely, closest to the sky, and he smiles to himself. Even now, his desire to fly has not been muted in the least. In fact, it probably intensified, with the novelty of having a sky to fly in, to feel the adrenaline rush and the brightness of the high atmosphere instead of the blackness of space, where only stars lit the way. There is so much he still has to do, much that he has to accomplish for himself, his friends, the Fleet, and rebuilding the damages and losses suffered. But he's perhaps content; this is a good place to be, where he's no longer floating aimlessly in space, and he wonders if he should call this home. Even as he watches Sheryl and Ranka in the distance, not so very far away from where he is, he supposes that he really should.

He gazes up at the sky, the deep, never ending blue that had become synonymous with freedom, and he sobers slightly, raising his hand to the sky, fingers closed together. A deceptively gentle flick of his wrist, smoothing through the air, gliding and dipping with the understated grace of his previous profession, his other passion - and he quietly wonders if his father had been the few survivors of the Frontier fleet. There is no way he couldn't be, right? He pauses, just like that, before he spreads his fingers, catching the sunlight. He'd never once seen real sunlight before - all of them had been manufactured, controlled, and it felt good to feel it naturally.

Above all, the Vajra planet signified a new beginning for everyone and everything. Wounds from the war had to be healed, acceptance had to be learned, from both humans and Vajra alike, and he thinks that maybe when the reconstruction is mostly done, he could venture once again into kabuki. He'd spent so long running away from it that he had forgotten that it had long been a part of him. Perhaps his brother had been right, too. Being an actor depended on the blood one had flowing in his veins, after all. Ridiculous, really, because blood was still red and when you were wounded and bleeding, you were no different from anyone else.

He remembers a song, and he hums it softly under his breath, too soft for anyone to catch. There is a different kind of rhythm from Sheryl's and Ranka's songs, more peaceful, because silence is important. The reflection of nature is inherent in the music he's known before. He remembers these principles clearly, and for a moment, he wishes that he could have spoken with his father once again.

Make peace, perhaps. Life is too short to go on fighting, and Alto is intent on molding those both aspects of his life together. It took such a war to remember his love for theater, the passion and the joy that comes from being the center of attention, to living someone else's life and replaying it for everyone to see. And there are dreams, hopes and dreams of being the best - Sheryl and Ranka had both reminded him of that; they were talented in what they did, and of course, Alto had been glad for them. But more essentially, they were the ones who eased him back into reminiscing about what he had before; the taste for show business.

And he shakes his head before he loses himself in ideals and plans and forgets the challenges that still lay before him, before each and every one of them - not now. Now really isn't the time to be contemplating things like this, is it? Not when so many people are homeless, lost and confused without a certain leader to guide them. The euphoria of victory wears off quickly, and the realism of their situation sets in slowly. But even with realism, there was a sort of optimism to be gleaned from it; Sheryl's and Ranka's were infectious, and he begins to wonder what he would have been like without them, the two who were his wings. When had it been the three of them? When had he come to depend on them, to care for them so much? He doesn't quite understand what he feels for them, or had ever stopped to wonder about what exactly they felt for him, and he's perfectly content to leave it that way, for the sole reason that he finds himself reluctant to break the balance that the three of them had kept perfectly.

He reflects on them quietly, in the rare moment that he allowed himself to think beyond, "they're just really troublesome sometimes", and he finds himself grateful, nonetheless. They both were definitely stronger than they'd given themselves credit for, and it was heartening simply watching them grow and change. And feeling himself grow and change together right along with them. Alto feels affection, if only for a moment, for the chemistry they share, even as he climbs down from the roof to join them. They catch sight of him, and their expressions brighten. They invite him along, teasing and laughing, and Alto falls comfortably into his somewhat miffed state - something that he had long considered as his default reaction whenever it came to the two of them, or the strange competitions that they would randomly indulge in against each other, which baffled him more often than not. Especially when it involved him in one way or another.

Frontier might have sustained massive damages. The Vajra may eventually turn on them because of their difference, and they might have to venture off into space again, or some greedy human bastard might come along and incite war against the Vajra again in the goal of taking their world (because if there's anything he's learned from the last conflict, it's that people can be just as bad, or worse, than the creatures that they had been fighting against), but right now, it all doesn't really matter.

Because right here, right now, like this, everything is perfect.
