Meanwhile, Langdon had listened to Kohler's video tape, which was handed to him as Kohler died, on which Carlo confessed that he had killed the Pope and that he was responsible for the terrorist threat and the murder of the Cardinals. In front of the horrified College of Cardinals who had since learned about this, he tried to justify his actions, gathering only comprehension. Then, Saverio Mortati, the Cardinal Dean told him the truth about the Pope; that he had fallen in love with a nun called Maria, that their child had been fathered through artificial insemination and he therefore broke no vow. Mortati also told him the child's identity: Carlo Ventresca.

Horrified by the truth, he burnt himself alive on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica. His ashes, recovered by Mortati, later the new Pope, were put next to his father's sarcophagus.

Shortly thereafter, it becomes clear that Ventresca was elected Pope by Acclamation by Adoration, which is when all the Cardinals freely chant one clergyman's name, which they did before Carlo lit himself on fire. He reigned for under 17 minutes. CONGRATULATIONS, DICKWAD.

Personality: He’s extremely devout in his beliefs, bordering on crazy about it. He pretty much possesses a “My way or the highway” approach to religion too, and will basically do anything he possibly can to protect the Church and make more people feel like he does. Other than that? He’s... A manipulative cunt. He uses people to get ahead and happily killed a good number of people in order to unite the church against a threat that he made up. But he seems pleasant enough and feels completely justified in doing this until the very, bitter end.
Other: I’m going more book-canon than movie-canon, so obviously there are differences like the Illuminati Diamond which never was mentioned in the movie, and Kohler, and Carlo being the Pope’s son. And also his name being Carlo rather than Patrick which I somehow forgot to mention the first time through this app. Lol whoops?

How many of you believe in God? Well, I suppose that doesn’t matter right now. What matters is how many of you want to. How many of you want to have faith in something bigger and more awesome than you? How many of you desire to have something else in your lives? Something not as hedonistic? Not as painful? Third Person: How dare he. How dare he! The man who was Pope - no! The man who had raised him, cared for him was... Was...

Was a common sinner. He and some... Whore had... Carlo’s body shook as he thought about it. He wanted to vomit, or punch something or... No, he couldn’t do that. He wouldn’t... But... The thought seemed so clear and it was an obvious solution to the man’s sin... And as the Camerlengo, it would be easy for him to accomplish without anyone ever finding out... No, he mustn’t. But maybe... Maybe this was God’s will. Maybe that was why he had even thought such a thing in the first place. Yes... God had given him a plan and God would give him the strength. He owed that man his life, but his sin must be punished.

And who better to punish him than someone who knew his darkest secret?
