Then the choice was taken away from her. Arriving home one evening, Aria discovered that Ella had received a letter from A detailing not only Byron’s affair but also the fact that Aria had known about it the whole time. This spelled the beginning of the end for the Montgomerys’ marriage and before long they had separated, with Ella moving out of the family home. But A wasn’t done with disrupting Aria’s life. Things with Ezra had been going about as well as could be expected, considering he was her teacher and they had to keep their relationship under wraps, but when Ezra intercepted a text from A that was intended for Aria he assumed she had been bragging to her friends and called an end to their involvement.

Broken-hearted and struggling to deal with the guilt she felt over her parents’ separation, Aria retreated into herself and was convinced she would not be going to Homecoming. Hanna, Spencer and Emily rallied round her, though she still did not tell them about Ezra - when Hanna hit close to the mark by guessing she was distracted by boy issues, Aria pretended to be moping after a boy she’d left behind in Iceland. Eventually she was persuaded to go along with her friends but her night hit a bumpy start when she was stuck manning one of the amusement stalls with Ezra. She managed to convince him that she hadn’t told anyone, explaining that A was causing trouble for her, but it made little difference. Shortly after Homecoming, Aria discovered that she had a different English teacher and it seemed that she and Ezra were done for good.

All the while, A continued to haunt the girls. When Alison’s brother returned to Rosewood for her memorial service, which her friends had been arranging, he became another in their list of suspects which also included Jenna and her step-brother Toby Cavanaugh, but they were still no closer to the truth. In the meantime, Hanna seemed determined to draw Aria out of her mope and worked to set her up with old crush Noel Kahn. Initially reluctant, Aria found herself bonding with Noel after a hurricane warning saw them both stuck at school where they were supposed to take their SATs.

Just as they had been about to kiss, however, they were interrupted by none other than Ezra. He revealed that he had been looking for another teaching job in New York and that Aria had been all he could think about while he had been away. Aria was furious that he had seen fit to decide what was best for them without consulting her but when he texted her during Mona’s birthday campout asking her to meet him, she couldn’t resist. Soon they were making out in his car, blissfully unaware that they had been seen both by Hanna - who was on the lookout for A - and an unidentified figure who wrote “I see you” in the condensation of the rear windscreen. Unfortunately, their reunion was cut short as Hanna texted Aria and the other girls, certain she knew who A was. The girls reached Hanna just in time to see her get run over, with A telling them that “She knew too much”.
