After the reading of the will, in the second episode, it comes to light that Nathan, who ran off seventeen years ago, owns 50% of the company. A nearby chain of funeral homes is trying to put them out of business, and try to use Nathan to get at his brother (who is already upset about having not been left the entire company after dedicating his life to it).
As for Claire, her father set up a trust in her name. She can attend any school she wants/gets into and it will be paid for in full. Should she decide not to attend college, she must wait until her 25th birthday to claim the funds. She thinks this is beyond unfair, and that her father is "blackmailing her from beyond the grave." [Eventually she settles on an art school, only to later drop out.]
Gabriel and Claire start hanging out more and end up sleeping together. But during the act he asks her to suck his toes. The next day at school everyone knows about it and they're all calling her "Toe Slut" and "This Little Piggy Lover." To show Gabe what's what, she steals a foot from her house and puts it in his locker.
I leave off there because that's where I'll start her, in game.
Personality: Claire is a headstrong young girl who thinks she has all the answers. She can be bratty, brash, and irrational at the best of times. But she also feels very deeply. She falls fast and she loves her family, even if she doesn't like to admit it. She's also a great deal more intelligent than she either comes across or gives herself credit for. And for a person being so determined not to fall into line with the pack, she certainly is easily influenced. Especially by men.
She puts a lot of stock into the opinions of men. And will often change herself to suit them. Her father, her brothers, and every love interest she has during the series show this. Nate has especial influence on her after being gone so long. His story speaks to her of the freedom she could have if she had the courage to run, like he did. In love interests, she relies on their opinions to boost her self-esteem.
Other: She has a lot of confidence and is very brave for her age. But she's also aimless, much like her brother Nate. She's not sure, even in later seasons, where she wants her life to go, or even who she is. She turns to drugs (mostly pot) and art to show her the way.
Additional Links: Six Feet Under is interspersed with "delusions" or daydreams the characters have throughout the day. But they're a seamless part of the episode, so that your suspension of disbelief is tested.

What is this? Some kind of.. fetish place for weirdos? I'm not sitting on a balloon for any of you. [points firmly at the screen, gritting her teeth a bit.] ..You got that?
[there's a pause as she's obviously poking around DDD, her nose wrinkling as she goes.]
This is some pretty fucked up shit, but at least it's not a fetish place. No ducks either, go figure.
Well, I'm Claire... [rolls her eyes.] If any of you care. And I know - all about shit being fucked up. [a bit more somber now.] My dad died on Christmas Eve, and my brother who I haven't really even known my whole life came back to run the business with David. My other brother. ...The business being dead people. Things are really screwy here right now, and uh. I guess it's all as well you guys showed up.
I don't really have anybody else.
Third Person: She had known, before anyone else. Because she paid attention. They all thought she was stupid, or just plain didn't care, but it just wasn't true. It was easy to see her brother was unhappy.
But lately, David had seemed a little brighter. He was laughing now, albeit not much, and it was always brief. Claire could sense it though, it was as if all the molecules in the air around Dave Fisher had rearranged. As if his very presence in the universe had been altered.
The day of her dad's funeral; that was when she knew. She saw Keith first, spotted him before anyone else in the room. Which was strange, she even thought so at the time. He was a buff black cop in a room full of snooty white people. But she deftly followed his gaze back to her brother. And the fear in David's eyes had sealed it.
They were banging.
At first she thought that's all it was, but as that seed of knowledge grew in her head she started putting the pieces together. David always tried so hard with his girlfriends, especially Sarah. He even proposed to her, but Claire suspected it was because Mom and Dad liked her so much, and not because David did.
Yes, her brother was a neatly constructed facade, based on the opinions and rules laid out by others. When was her brother going to seize the damn day, and take what was his? Did he honestly think they wouldn't love him anymore, after all this family had been through?
It was how Claire knew he was a Fisher anyway. Too self-absorbed and caught up in being sad that he didn't realize the only person he was hurting was himself. Yeah, so Mom might freak. She always got over things quick enough. And this was David's life, not hers. Claire just thought it was really fucked up, that her brother hadn't even talked to her about it.
So when she got the opportunity, alone with Keith, looking for a severed human foot - she went for it. She asked him what he saw in her brother and she had to say, she was surprised at his answers. The David Keith described was not the David Claire knew. She didn't know her brother could be funny, and kind.
From that day forward, she embarked on the quest to bring those qualities out in her brother. And maybe, not be so hard on him, even if he was hard on her sometimes. She did steal a foot, so maybe she deserved his overbearing concern.
At least he had always been there for her, and that was more than she could say for - anyone else in her life. Nate was here now, but he had only ever come on holidays. How long would it be before he abandoned them again? And her mother was always there but she wasn't really there. Ruth Fisher was always out to lunch, and not to get a sandwich. Even though she shared exactly no traits with her brother, David, oftentimes she felt like they were the only sane Fishers.
It was a comforting thought.
