Neville Longbottom | Harry Potter

Personality:

At first glance, it looks like the Neville in the beginning is a totally different character than the Neville at the end. And, really, the first impression Neville gives doesn’t exactly help matters. He’s got a memory like a sieve, and his ability to forget passwords is nigh legendary. He lends himself to bullying like a bank lends out money. He’s prone to panicking, prone to flubbing up simple spells, and most of all, prone to failing horribly at potions. He’s slow to learn, but Snape doesn’t particularly help matters with his sunny disposition, which creates a chain reaction of potions avoidance. Neville even calls himself practically a squib on occasion. How he got sorted into Gryffindor and not Hufflepuff could be a mystery for the ages, if you didn’t know Neville at all.

If there’s one thing younger Neville’s good at that isn’t forgetting, it’s occasional flashes of brilliance. Even from the start, he shows signs of his impending epic bravery. He’s the second person in the entire series to take a swing at Draco Malfoy. He serves dragon induced detention due to trying to warn the trio that they’ve been spotted. Most importantly and bravely at all, he stands up to Harry and his friends when they attempt to go after the Philosopher’s Stone. Still, by and large, his bravery remains a hidden quality, buried under layers of absolute failure. When he nearly faints due to the Dementors, it doesn’t seem to merit a second glance.

It’s worth a second glance, all the same. Neville visits his parents often, and other people finding out about them is his very worst nightmare. His Gran accuses him of being ashamed of them, but judging from how he seems to save every gum wrapper his mother gives him, nothing could be further from the truth. The problem isn’t his mother or his father. The problem is that he can’t live up to their example in his family’s eyes. When he picks his sixth year classes with McGonagall, he tries to take potions again, despite how much humiliation it causes him, just because he needs it to be an auror like his parents.

Confidence is what he lacks, above all. Once he gains some, he shows true skill and valor. He takes to Dumbledore’s Army like a second home. In the fight at the Department of Mysteries, he’s one of the last students standing before the cavalry arrives. He accepts his talents in herbology and charms, and stops trying so very hard to be someone he’s not. He makes his grandmother proud. He leads the resistance in Hogwarts when the Death Eaters take it over. He’s the first person to stand up to others, and one of the last to stand down. Courage of the heart is very rare, but Neville has it in spades.

To cover all of Neville’s changes would take seven books entire. The short version goes like this: give a boy some confidence, and he’ll shine like a diamond.

Other:

Neville’s pureblooded in the Weasley model: Tons of relatives and not obsessed with purity and/or dickery.

First Person (entry type):

Has anybody seen a toad? I must’ve left him behind on one of those worldhops, ‘cause I haven’t seen him since yesterday. He’s not in the garden, I looked there, and he’s not in the attic or Gran’d have found him. He’s got to be here somewhere, he can’t have hopped very far. Well. Maybe he could’ve. But I don’t think so. He hasn’t before, anyway. I don’t think he would now.

His name’s Trevor, he might answer to that. If you see him, please let me know. I don’t think it’d go over very well if I lost him for good, and before school even starts!

Third Person:

Neville kept a lot of old things in his desk drawers. He received the desk from his uncle for his birthday a year ago. His uncle said that he needed a proper place to write, if he wanted to do well at Hogwarts, and that was the end of that. The desk was accompanied by a fine feather quill and a few rolls of parchment, courtesy of his aunt. Other than that, the desk was just a desk: made of wood, with a wobbly leg, and taking up a lot of space in his room.

The things inside the desk, though, looked like a lot of rubbish. There were a few crumpled sheets of parchment paper, of course, covered with crossed out words. A few candy wrappers clung to the sides and got sticky in the summer. There was a pencil eraser, which Neville never used. Not having a pencil didn’t hurt. Some surely stale Berty Bott’s Every Flavour Beans rattled when he pulled out a drawer, and three chocolate frog cards tended to join them. Mostly, his desk was filled with Droobles’ Gum wrappers.

Sometimes, Gran’d remind him to throw away the junk in his desk. Occasionally, she offered to do it for him if he kept forgetting. He’d always say no, and insist he hadn’t forgotten, honest. Which was true, if you asked him. Some things were too important to forget. The things he got from his mum and dad were one of them.
