Nyota Uhura // Star Trek XI // 3/?

[identity profile] nyota-uhura24.livejournal.com 2011-01-16 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
Personality/Other: Nyota takes her work very seriously. She's particularly talented in both xenolinguistics (proficient in 83% of official Federation languages and dialogues) and operations (she knows the ship’s systems like the back of her own hand). Languages are the way she interprets the universe, and learning new ones always makes her extremely excited. Swahili was her first language, closely followed by Standard and French. Swahili is still closest to her heart, but she also adores Deltan, Andorian, and Ancient Vulcan.

Nyota tends to be friendly, though she isn't exactly open, and can be slow to really trust others. She's caring and concerned towards her friends, sharp-tongued when she's angry, and quick to form opinions but willing to give second chances. She takes work and play very seriously, and wants other people to take her as seriously as she takes herself, which is sometimes a little too seriously. Jim and other friends have taught her to laugh at herself a little. She has a tendency to think of herself as everyone's big sister, and tries to take care of the people around her even though she doesn't like the idea of anyone taking care of her. She'll sing over the intercom to crewman stuck working alone in secluded parts of the ship, and order superior officers to go sleep if she thinks they need to (they don't always listen, to her annoyance).

Even though the Enterprise is her world, she's still attached to home and very proud of her African heritage. She talks to her family as often as possible, and decorates her personal quarters with a zebra-skin bedspread, African sculptures and masks, and wall panels with images of Africa.

She's got a good singing voice and loves music, is a terrible cook when it comes to anything but chicken noodle soup, and spends her spare team reading and translating. She's also a very fast runner, and used to run the 100 meter dash in record time. Even though she likes to come across as having no fear, she has a rather debilitating fear of small spaces, which she's only able to keep at bay by focusing on her duty. She's also an occasional insomniac.

Nyota Uhura // Star Trek XI // 4/4

First Person Sample: Lieutenant Keenser came down to the Communications Lab this afternoon, as I requested, and I managed to glance around the room and not notice that he was standing right next to me. Luckily he didn't seem to mind too terribly much, and the embarrassment had mostly vanished by the time he was teaching me the correct way to pronounce basic words in his native tongue. He looked a little surprised when I asked him to teach me, and was definitely thrown off by my enthusiasm, but the more words I pronounced correctly the more vigorously he nodded and the more emphatically he gestured. The guttural sounds remind me a little of the Kelamite language, and though this requires more subtle lip moments I can reproduce the sounds fairly easily. We went through a fairly extensive list of vocabulary and started to work on basic sentence structure. After another lesson or two, I should be able to have basic conversations in Elgemese.

It's been a while since I had the chance to learn a new language, and it's impossible to be anything but excited about it. I now have a new way to see the universe, or perhaps a new universe all together. Keenser's people so rarely leave their world and this is a unique and rare opportunity to get a glimpse into it. He speaks very clipped and abbreviated standard, but in his own language he expresses himself much more extensively. It's clear that he misses home and that Elgemese is the language of his heart the way Swahili is the language of mine. I asked him to tell me a little more about his home world, and as he explained the language started to take shape and to shape the world he described. I wasn't very eloquent when I expressed my gratitude in Elgemese, but that was more than made up for by the fact that I'm fairly certain the expression on his face was a smile.

Based on this thread. (http://community.livejournal.com/to_boldlygo/65531.html)

Third Person Sample: The current crisis was taking it's toll on everyone, but it was still painful to watch Scotty push his food around his plate after eating only a few bites. Clearly the remainder of dinner was a lost cause. Nyota made a mental note to make sure that she ate something later so that she wouldn't make herself ill and collapse. She had to be here, for the ship, for her friends. Her own grief and fear were neatly tucked away in the corner of her heart where she kept things she didn't want to think about. Every time she felt the dread and melancholy creep up on her again, she reminded herself that there were people who needed her to be put together.

And right now, Scotty needed someone to make him take care of himself. As far as she could tell this was the first time he'd left Engineering in two days, and he'd only come to the mess hall because one of his lieutenants basically forced him to. She wasn't going to let him drive himself to mental and physical collapse. The Enterprise couldn't survive this without him, and he wouldn't survive much more of this. Besides, he was her friend, and she couldn't keep watching him suffer without at least trying to do something about it. Scotty wasn't going to eat anymore, but he needed sleep. Badly. He was her superior officer, but that didn't matter at the moment. "Scotty," she said, voice firm, "Go to your room and go to sleep. That's an order."

Note: If there's any other information you need to make a decision, please let me know! The Jim Kirk and Montgomery Scott who play on DDD are both muns and muses I play with often in other forums, so it should be fairly easy to integrate into the Star Trek XI interactions on DDD. I don't know the Leonard McCoy or Hikaru Sulu, but I'm hoping I'll get the chance to soon!
