The group ultimately ended up in Ba Sing Se, in an attempt to alert the oblivious king of the Earth kingdom to the uneasy state of affairs of the world outside of the city walls. While there, Katara was reunited with Jet, a boy who had betrayed Aang, Sokka, and herself on their initial journey to the North Pole. She met him with anger and uneasiness at first, but showed a conflicted side when he died fighting on their side later.
When the princess of the Fire Nation, Azula, began attacking Ba Sing Se later, Katara was one of the first to be captured and imprisoned. Zuko was tossed into the cell with her and seems to express regret and sadness-- for the first time, Katara actually softened slightly to the plight of their enemy. That was, of course, until Zuko betrayed them all, dismissing the change of heart that he almost had and helping Azula defeat Aang and friends. This did nothing but confirm for Katara what she had believed all along: their enemies were irredeemable monsters.
Katara et al barely managed to escape, leaving Ba Sing Se in the hands of the Fire Nation. The Gaang infiltrated the Fire Nation, but the comet didn't come on time. From here on out, her timeline follows the AU DDD Avatar-canon.
Personality: As a general rule, Katara prides herself on being a mature, responsible young woman. It's true, for the most part: she takes great pains to be compassionate and kind, though she does have a bad habit of mothering the people she cares about. She rarely acknowledges the mothering behavior as being as overbearing as it can be; in her mind, she's being mature, not bossy. This behavior is evidenced by her tendency to dictate bedtimes, schedules, and her inclination to keep close inventory of how both time and money is being spent.
Thankfully, Katara isn't just a pushy know-it-all. She is not averse to hard work and will do whatever it takes to achieve a goal that she's either set or had set for her. Good at heart, Katara is armed with a bravery bolstered by her convictions, and is unwilling to sit on the sidelines while any kind of injustice is being committed, especially if she can believes she can do anything about it. Though she occasionally gives in to fits of self-doubt, she manages to maintain a firm resolve throughout most dire situations, and with that, the faith that everything will be alright in the end.
Despite Katara's carefully preserved projection of capability and level-headedness, she is still very much a teenage girl. She worries a lot, and can be extremely self-righteous when either argued with or confronted about her bossiness. She battles mentally with vague worries of abandonment; her mother died when she was young and her father left a long time ago in a war effort, which explains for the most part the fierce protectiveness of her friends -- she's afraid of losing them. She can also hold a hell of a grudge, and is typically painfully untrusting when she's been crossed. She is not a shrinking violet, electing to speak her mind, threaten when she feels threatened, and fight to the end when it's necessary.
She's also very hilarious and her jokes are always funny, no matter what anyone else might think.
Other: Katara is a water-bender, and a pretty darn tootin' good one, at that. She has the ability to manipulate water in any form, and is capable of using this skill both offensively and defensively. Granted, she actually has to have water to manipulate it; she's not able to materialize it, just bend it.
She also has basic healing powers as part of the whole water-bending schtick. She won't be bringing anyone back from the dead or repairing any severe internal hemorrhaging, but with enough time and concentration, she can take care of rudimentary scrapes and burns.
First Person: I can't find my necklace. I mean, this isn't a catastrophe -- I haven't lost it, I've just misplaced it, but I can't remember where I put it when I took it off to bathe earlier. Alright, I'm frustrated. This doesn't happen. I'm the responsible one, I'm the one that keeps up with things, and now I do something like put my necklace down and walk away?
Alright, Katara. Calm. Deep breaths. How many times have you had to drop what you were doing just to find Sokka's lost socks? I'm sure it's sitting around here somewhere. Let's go over it again, step-by-step.
Third Person: It was no secret that Katara got cranky when she missed sleep. It wasn't something she could help; there was just something that was godawful about the world when she viewed it through heavy eyelids. The fact that Aang, Toph, and Sokka felt the need to keep a safe distance of eight or nine feet from her as they walked through the village market couldn't be blamed on her.
"I can hear you whispering about me," she grumped as she picked up a round, brown vegetable from a pile, inspecting it with narrow eyes as she caught Sokka and Aang exchanging nervous glances out of the corner of her vision. The man running the vegetable stand started to speak, no doubt trying to sell her whatever it was she was holding in her hand, and Katara cut him off with a dark, sleepy glare. "It's bruised. Why would you try to sell us bruised food?" she asked briskly, shoving the produce back into the vendor's hand, and he turned it around in his fingers, flabberghasted and searching for the nonexistent rotten spot.
"I've got three mouths to feed, and I'm not going to make soup with vegetables that have gone bad."
Sokka opened his mouth, probably in protest of Katara's tone -- he hated being spoken about like he was a little kid -- but, without looking, Katara pointed at him in warning and he clicked his teeth shut quickly.
